Maybe if we had a true big man coach it would make a difference. We have five hundred PG coaches, maybe that's why they get all the rebounds.

I know we have K-free and he rebounded with the heart of a lion. I'm talking about a true center type of coach.

Interesting perspective. Frankly, it's possible. Kids don't box out anymore, they rebound by going up and getting the ball. If we are actually. boxing out, maybe the announcers are right.

I always found that when I boxed out, I had trouble getting the ball. I focused so much on keeping my man from getting boards that I was unable to grab it! If our bigs are really focused more on blocking out than rebounding, quick guards will sneak in and grab the ball.
This!
Sometimes it isn't as simple as "nobody is boxing out":

1) Shot blockers take themselves out of the play for the rebound. Brimah right now has the mindset of contesting everything - he has to learn the nuances of when to stay at home. It'll take time.

2) If guards don't contain penetration, boxing out assignments are lost as defensive help is forced to rotate and players are left open. We haven't been all that great this year at containing the ball.

3) You are only as strong as your weakest link. If three guys block out perfectly, and the fourth doesn't, than that fourth opponent is often going to have a red carpet to the basketball, since your three guys are going to be engaged with an opponent and won't be able to go get the ball as quickly.
And this!

Other factors: strong hands to gather the ball, anticipating where and when the ball is coming off the back board or hoop, and knowing when to release from the guy you are boxing out and go for the ball.

SN is incredible at all these facets. He's the most complete rebounder.

Being relatively short myself, how in the world does anyone over 6'9" tall not know how get rebounds? We've got at least 4 players at that height.

Good luck on this one Coach, but its not so good that he has to teach all of our NCAA Div 1 bigs how to rebound.

Boxing out at this level is not quite as easy as you all think it is. That said, we need a better effort than what we delivered yesterday. I am amazed that the ball cannot ind you a few times a game. However, when you stand around and the other team hustles you end up with 1 rebound. Defense and rebounding is positioning and desire, although a wide body helps.

They were really bad against Yale. But let's not forget they outrebounded a team with widebody Mitchell, highly ranked (but relatively underwhelming) Shaquille Cleare, Smotrycz and Layman.

So, they can do it. They have done it. And at the most crucial part of the game, Brimah yanked down a rebound. Olander did too!

Agree 100%. I'm surprised at how bad the guards have been containing dribble penetration. Conversely, with the new rules I expected Shabazz and Boatright to be living at the line, but instead they seem to be the ones picking up cheap fouls. I see the concerted effort by Ollie to get the ball moving, but sometimes I just want to see Bazz take his guy off the bounce and draw a foul.

Excellent point. I guess the next step is building consistency.

If DD was more aggressive he would had limited the disparity in rebounds as well- he looked like he did not want to be on the floor yesterday. OC and DD need to cut to the basket which will lead to more balance with our perimeter shooting and help rebounds because we will positioned under the basket and they are higher % shots. (not that we have been doing poorly shooting from the outside this year). DD's bread and butter is cutting to the basket and he needs to not hesitate and make strong moves as soon as the ball hits his hands- he will be a match up problem for most teams.

Too early to panic, but certainly reason for concern. If you are a starting PF or C you wake up on game day with three boards. Missed free throws alone should give you three. Put-backs a tip-ins should get you another two. So with a little engery and effort you should find at least two more.

I have always believed every starting big should average at least seven boards.

Yale rebounded all the missed FTs on both ends.

Completely OT, but I love the fact that we're now seeing evidence of kids born in the ~1995 timeframe that were named after Shaq.

Our last true big man coach was Clyde V. I took a lot of heat defending him and Hathaway did not have the courage to slap him on the wrist and keep him for a $10 offense. Taking a date to MacDonald's is more sex for money than what Clyde did.
