In a statement given to The Post, MLB said, “After the 2017 season, we learned that a number of Clubs believed utilizing video monitors in the clubhouse and video room to decipher signs so they could later be relayed to a runner on second base was not a violation of MLB rules as long as the information was not communicated electronically to the dugout. As a result, we clarified the rules going forward to expressly prohibit such conduct.”

MLB considered what the Astros did as way more egregious for multiple reasons. One, it happened in real time to alert hitters what was coming, even with no runners on base. Secondly, it included the creation of an algorithm to decipher the signs that could be relayed to runners at second to alert hitters. Additionally, electronic communication was used in multiple ways and it continued beyond the Sept. 15, 2017, commissioner’s edict that MLB sees as a line in the sand about sign stealing.

EVERY team in baseball was stealing signs using technology, it was widely known and accepted. The Astros took it too far and that is why they became the example. This is coming from a Red Sox fan by the way,

Off topic from this discussion but baseball related. I was driving through Orlando and heard the unmistakable sound of baseball on the radio. Unfortunately, it was a rebroadcast of the Tampa Chicago ALDS. I sure miss baseball.

This is sort of a dumb artificial distinction that sounds like something a fan would say to justify what the team he roots for does.
 
Stealing signs in baseball without complex computer algos or hidden cameras relayed by runners who reach second base is the basketball equivalent to studying film of your opponents offensive / defensive sets in to give yourself an advantage.

Stealing signs in baseball using complex computer algos and hidden cameras relayed in real-time through the dugout for each pitch is like micing up the opposing teams locker room & huddles to give yourself an advantage.

Not a perfect example, but hopefully explains the vast difference between what was proven that the Astros did and what the Yankees are accused to have done.

Still doesn't matter to me. The game is far too pitcher centric as far as I'm concerned. Just throw the damn ball. Oh, and they should also have to bat.

As long as there is technology there will be attempts by EVERYONE to use it to their advantage
I'm willing to bet that nearly every team used things on the Astro's level to get an advantage in any one or more aspects of the game.

We shall see what gets released. Curious to see how the bullpen phones play into this. But all we have right now is what Tex / other players have said about what the Yankees were doing.

I am a Yankees fan, and don’t doubt that they / the rest of baseball was using technology (like video feeds - Tex said the team used broadcasts for years).

But the difference is how the stolen data was decoded & relayed.

Am I biased? Probably. But I feel that using a computer algo to crack codes and banging on trash cans to send the signs for each pitch is different than using a TV broadcast to decode signs and then relay it only when a runner reaches second base. Could what the Yankees did be more than that? Sure, but it’s only speculation until we see this letter. We know for sure the extent the Astros went to cheat. And as a lifelong baseball fan (and what other players have expressed about what they did) it clearly was way over the line of what would be considered a competitive edge and cheating.

Real time has impact this is nothing. In case Sox fans can’t read everyone was already doing this as Tex said. Only the Sox and Stro’s were real time cheaters. Fake news but have fun!
 
I heard that they are going to ban UConn from any postseason play if there is ever a baseball game again because one of their former players is on the Astros.
