Remember when rumors about Tristen not being as good as everyone had thought started circulating in his first summer here? Some people never learn. Aiden is learning the hardest most important position in Hurleys system. He’s not replacing Cam. He’s replacing Newton. Give him time.

For what it’s worth HE WASNT EVEN BAD
They were kinda right in 2023 though. Newton didn't play at an All American level until his second season for us. He was a solid connecting piece and table setter his first year. If people expect a 2023 Newton season from Mahaney, they'll probably be satisfied.

The narrative wasn’t that he wasn’t an all American player. The narrative during the off season from Rob Dauster and others was that he wasn’t a UConn starter level player

Most people here (including myself) who were there and commenting on Mahaney aren't crapping on him, calling him a bust, or saying he won't be a great player for us. All we are saying is in this one practice, he didn't impress and didn't seem to have much of a presence (physically or otherwise). Most acknowledge this is probably him still adjusting, but I also do not think it's unfair to predict that based on his stature, the conference that he is coming from, and the eye test during this practice, that he may need more time than we expected for him to adjust to our system and the physicality of the conference. I think he will get there, but I also don't think he will close to what Cam was for us, he was unique. I think what someone said once that he will be something between Joey and Cam will probably be right, and that's great.
Most people were not, but there was one person who was pretty negative and I think someone made a comparison to a D2 transfer. Mahoney is coming from a top 25, NCAA tournament team, not Hofstra or some Patriot league school.

Mahaney aside. Solo Ball looked amazing. He’s a star.
Did he? I feel like i never really noticed him out there aside from some dunks in the non live defense drills. I might’ve just missed it though

My views:

Highlights

Abraham is a find. Physical, long, athletic, composed and has a great release and good rotation. He’s going to be a great Husky.

Hassan - leader, looks and acts like a captain.

Alex - same. You can just feel his presence on the court, at all times. His coming back is huge in terms of on court leadership with new pieces.

Ross - looked really good. Put on some muscle, played within himself and hit a lot of shots.

Nowell - physical and a pest on defense, great energy, confident and has a really, really nice efficient stroke

Medium-lights

Solo - has some great moments but then also continues to have times where he looks out of sync, misses shots bad.

McNeeley - took some time to warm up, missed most of his early shots but then warmed up towards back end. Great looking shot even when not falling.

Stew - his body language lacks oomph. Missed a few early threes, then took a ball to the rim that looked great which sparked some late three makes. His jumper tends to lack rotation. He should go to rim more often than settle.

Samson - had the couple standard couple aloof moments, missed a pass high as wasn’t looking, stripped. Did have one nice take that wasn’t a dunk.

Low

Mahaney - he looked timid and out of place a lot. And he looks very small, both height and physicality. And his shot wasn’t dropping. You can sense this will be a big adjustment for him.

Disappointed we didn’t get to see Reed as his role is going to be massive.
Agree completely. Your observations match mine exactly. Reed is going to be key. Aiden appeared less than advertised. Solo or Nowell will need to step up if we are going to stay elite. I think McNeeley will get there but he’s not there yet . Potential for this team is great but may struggle early with tough schedule to start.

Solo was Solo - a few really great moments, a couple knucklehead moments. Key with Solo will be consistency and refining the decision making.

A few more observations from open practice. When the team first came on the floor they split up, five or six at each end basket plus walk-ons to shoot around and warm up. Nowell and Abraham were at my end and like right away they shared a moment, laughing with each other, sorta looking around like they could not believe how many people were there. It was cool, the two freshmen seeing how great this UConn fan base is.

J Ross stopped SJ from dunking the ball down the other end. That got a roar. There's a video somewhere I believe. I don't think he actually blocked it, maybe he did, but it was more like he rose up and got in his way and SJ missed the dunk. Just speaks to how much stronger J Ross was playing, last year he would not have stood a chance of doing that, or even tried to. His teammates were all high 5n him.

J Stewart had a nice play, set up for a three deep in the corner, shot faked the D, and drove the baseline for a lightly contested layup. Just sayin, he looked good doing it. From his earlier pre-UConn film, Stewart has the whole package, length and power, a good handle, quick feet, and an array of moves to get his shots off.

Speaking on Aidan Mahaney, he looked really good early in the practice, dribbling, shooting, court awareness, being physical same as his teammates, but he did run out of steam, you could tell, clanging the front of the rim when shooting during the 5v5s a couple of times at least. He sure had a nice stroke in the beginning though, very nice follow thru.

Abraham had a nice dunk on a breakaway that got the crowd appreciative too.

That's it, we're going to rock this year, and contend for titles.

That Stew play was great and kind of swung him back in the right direction, went on to nail a couple threes afterwards. He missed everything before that layup.

He strikes me as a kid who needs to get some mojo going early to gain confidence. I’d prefer seeing him get to the rim more often, especially early, to establish that overall game and confidence. His jumper looks fairly dead coming off his fingers, generally rotation-less. Doesn’t strike me as the kind of kid that should be volume shooting threes. He had a tendency to have a quick 3 trigger when he got minutes last year, shot only 20% for the year and was worse than that until he had a couple hot games late. You can see why when you see his ball up close. Take the open look in the flow but taking it to the rim first should be his mantra, far more effective in the paint.

The only thing Rob Dauster is an authority on is making bad podcasts.

Karaban and the guy from TX both could see some 2 guard time.
So everyone was just going to let chef slide after saying AK is going to play some SG this season?

Yea but he has sources in and around the program without a doubt. He was reporting that he heard that from inside the program. And fans took that and made it a thing

You can go hot pump whatever you want, the kid as a freshman averaged 13ppg and 40% from beyond the arc, against teams like Gonzaga, Oregon State, Washington State, BYU, Utah, New Mexico, and San Diego. Against Gonzaga alone he averaged 19.5ppg over three games on the season.
Big East is a rough physical league. If you don't have the physicality you better be featuring some big time speed. It will be interesting to see how he fares.

Why is he just saying that about Mahaney? He could have said that about Karaban. He could have said that about a few people on the team. And I did say the probability is Mahaney won't be an All American, so I agree with you there.

His name is Mahaney, not "Mahaney". Aidan Mahaney. :)
