Notre Dame @ Virginia Tech 1/16/19

You realize this isn't a Notre Dame board, right?
You realize that almost everyone outside the South Bend Bubble hates Notre Dame, right?
Yeah I do realize that and I still find it funny.

Interesting. I almost want Ogunbowale to take a cheap shot at Dara to see how Marina would react.

Of course, Dara has been on campus a number of times, including this fall for the Michigan football weekend. She knows all of ND's players very well. She's practically the whole team's little sister. I don't see anyone coming after her. And if they do, they'll have to answer to more than just Marina.

I would think the Mabrey sisters would be going at each other hard on the court. After the game is over it's all about family but while you're on the court you want to win and get bragging rights.

There have been several games featuring sisters on opposing teams over the years that I've been aware of. I believe there were 2 meetings between Gonzaga and Tennessee when each had a Bjorklund (Jamie and Angie). Gonzaga was also involved in a sister showdown when they faced Stanford and each had a Tinkle (Joslyn and Elle, now frequently seen together courtside in Corvallis rooting for their younger brother Tres and dad Wayne, the coach of the OSU men's team). I'm pretty sure UConn and Stanford avoided playing each other during the year's Karlie and Katie Lou's careers overlapped.

I find it funny that some people who never even attended Notre Dame gravitate toward rooting for them.

I guess we find different things funny.

Guilty, but at least I have a half-decent origin story for my fandom.

I don't have ACC Network so not watching the game. I did see the Iowa game. Both featured a very lopsided 3rd quarter where ND completely blew the game wide open. 29-10 in Q3 tonight.

Like most teams in the ACC, Virginia Tech is a lot more bark than bite. This makes 4 consecutive losses, likely to be 5 when they visit Raleigh on Sunday.

to be fair..... most WCBB teams would have trouble with VPI's first 5 ACC games. @Miami, Syracuse, @ UVA, ND, and @ State

I mean, all 4 losses are to conference opponents, so I don't know how you can knock the conference in that regard.

But yeah, they went undefeated in non-conference play without beating anyone of note. Now, it's back to reality.

@UVA??

Ha, the commentators already pointing out what a trash-talker Marina is.

If she played basketball as well as she talked trash, she could be NPOY.
Beyond the trash talking what I find more annoying is her constant complaining. Her body language speaks volumes. I'll be interested to see if she takes those behaviors to the WNBA (if she makes it to that level) and how some of the league enforcers deal with her.

:confused::confused: I am not sure she has the physical tools to make an impact in the WNBA but her constant complaining fits into the WNBA like a glove.

Not specific to Women's BB but back in the day I loved the Irish men's BB team - John Shumate, Gary Brokaw and company. UCLA was the top dog and I think a lot of folks outside of South Bend became Irish fans looking for them to knock off Wooden's teams.

That was the only period I pulled for Notre Dame except when the women won the NC with local St. Louis product, N. Ivey.

I was lucky enough to attend ND during those years and even luckier to have a direct viewing line on Dwight "The Iceman" Clay's shot in that infamous UCLA vs. ND game in 1974 that ended UCLA's winning streak. As a frosh, attended classes with Irish first-year players"A.D." (Adrian Dantley), NJ's Bill Paterno and Toby Knight, a skinny forward from Long Island who had some good years later.

The Irish were still in the Big East then (as were the Huskies) and saw that specific team frequently when they came to the metro NYC area, particularly Seton Hall and Rutgers. Big fan of Niele, Ruth Riley, forward Kelly Siemon (now an ACC commentator) and sharpshooter Alicia Ratay. Another Irish team that only went 6 deep, max.

I would expect a fairly easy win for ND but hopefully Dara puts on a good display..I think VTech is still a year away from being really competitive in the ACC....

I think they may take a step back next season.... they lose so much from this year's roster. Emery, Magarity, Camp, Jean (although she's be injured most of this year)

Emery is an absolute baller (18.7 ppg) and will be dearly missed. Magarity is their 2nd-leading scorer (13.6 ppg) and by far their leading rebounder (12.9 rpg). Hard to imagine next year not being a step back, although they do have a highly rated post recruit (#32 HG).
