The dude throwing around "metrics". Anyone want to bet he barely got thru algebra?

By way, don't mean to start anything but my 2 reliable ACC sources tell me the ACC is kicking around the idea of adding UCONN.

Christopher Lambert @theDudeofWV · 30m 30 minutes ago

that would allow the ACC to go 3 divs and isolate the weak football schools in a loser div of their own.

Christopher Lambert @theDudeofWV · 30m 30 minutes ago

However, this is just my opinion, I think such a move would make it more likely the B1G gambles everything on an ACC raid than less so.

Christopher Lambert @theDudeofWV · 15m 15 minutes ago

No clear consensus. would add value to ACCN. But plenty of issues need resolved....

Christopher Lambert @theDudeofWV · 16m 16 minutes ago
Just to clear this up. I didn't say the ACC was adding UCONN. Or likely to add UCONN. I said the ACC was kicking the idea around.

Christopher Lambert @theDudeofWV · 27m 27 minutes ago
Just me wondering out loud so assign nothing to it but my opinion. But maybe the ACC is getting ready for something else?

@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush And as for the ACC kicking around the idea of adding UCONN...I know I'm in the huge minority on this..

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 11m 11 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush ...but whatever the distance is between the ACC accepting UCONN into the conf truly is...I think..

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 10m 10 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush ...the distance has become a bit smaller between Herbst and Delany. As I have stated before..B1G...

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 9m 9 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush ...will be kicking all tires around 2019-20 because the simple successful economics of the BTN...

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 9m 9 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush ...will propell the to do so. But I won't waste time rehashing all of that today. I truly don't...

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 7m 7 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush ..don't believe ACC is interested in 15/3 pods unless they use 3 div winners + wild card=9thconfgame

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 5m 5 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush And let's be honest...If ACC would expand by 1 or 2 right before opening up new Conf Network...well..

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 4m 4 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush ...it probably would want a Texas to insure a good lift off for Network..and we know this won't happen

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 3m 3 minutes ago
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush UCONN would be a good addition for a conference network...no doubt. But timing of ACC expanding is off

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 11m11 minutes ago
@flugempire @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush Methinks the ACC knows the B1G is going to try something.

Greg Flugaur‏@flugempire
@theDudeofWV @mkw_14 @Expansion_Crush ACC GOR is real and monetary teeth won't shrink enough until around 2019-20-21.

Hold on...I've got to put on my Captain Obvious superhero costume.

First, congratulations to UConn.

Second, yes, it matters, it matters a lot--it is that important. It was one more huge step forward. Admittedly, women's sports don't matter as much for television, but for B1G purposes that's only one piece of the puzzle. Both men and women in power award research dollars, the spirit of equality in sports opportunities is as important as the letter of the law, and championships in any sport (men's or women's) go to, well, champions. And, well, we'll just half of all students are women.

Again: Only the synergy of B1G/B1G Network/UConn can fully capitalize and exploit the latent potential. It's hardly a surprise if suddenly the rumors start flying that ACC is 'interested' in UConn. They're not interested in UConn--they're interested in not letting UConn go to the B1G. It's almost a given that the overnights for the game were on Delany's desk this morning and there's renewed conversation in more than one conference.

Every time Delany hears the word "championship" his ears perk up. Every time "UConn" and "champions" are used in the same sentence, you look more and more like B1G material.

Again, congratulations.

It's about how accessible the Big Ten Network is to another 3 million+ pairs of eyeballs, not necessarily if those eyeballs are actively watching. The BTN is available in CT and western MA but in many cases, only on a specialty tier. The goal for the Big Ten is to get the network on a basic tier or at least more people ordering the sports package. While Michigan football is right up there with UConn for me, it is not appointment TV and watching them is not worth the extra money to add the BTN. UConn sports are appointment TV, not only for me, but the majority of Connecticut subscribers. I have little doubt the DMA metrics work.

All that said. More eyeballs are watching UConn women's basketball games than an entire conference's slate of mens' games.

In short (in the interest of baseball season), If you add them, they will watch.

You've probably heard this a hundred times in realignment world: Football drives the bus.

What that means is that the big money is in football, specifically the Tier 1 marquee games--the games that the heavy hitters (NBC, CBS, ABC/ESPN, and FOX) pay the big dollars to broadcast. That's why an established program like Oklahoma would almost be a no-brainer addition to the B1G--Oklahoma would make more money and all of the other B1G schools would make more money, too. A profit, if you will, for adding Oklahoma.

UConn, on the other hand, well--UConn football ain't Oklahoma football. And, to make matters worse, throwing current UConn football into the B1G isn't doing UConn any favors and isn't likely to result in any marquee games, especially after the novelty factor wears off after the first year.

There's no question of UConn's value to the B1G network--every projection shows it. The question has always been: Does the value added to the network compensate for the lack of Tier 1 football value? The answer is tentatively, yes, although it could be uncomfortably close to a break even proposition. (I won't get into the cable fee/ad revenue split here.) In which case, there's no profit for the 14 existing schools of the B1G to add UConn. If the risk/reward isn't there, why bother?

From the B1G point of view, waiting and watching seems sensible. See how the O'Bannon thing appeals out, see how Rutgers/Maryland integrate, see who might be available down the road. There's no rush to add an "iffy" school. However, because of the geographical location, the B1G probably doesn't want to sit idly by and watch UConn go to another conference either. And, of course, I still believe Fox wants to push UConn somewhere--anywhere--they can maximize the basketball brand.

Everybody knows UConn is both available and undervalued--the question is "how much?" and "where would UConn fit?" If the ACC makes a move, at least it would force the B1G to ---- or get off the pot. The good news is this: If the ACC suddenly decides the UConn basketball brand would be critical to a successful ACC Network, that frenzied bidding Fishy hasn't seen may be on the horizon. Stay tuned.

We are worth more to the Big Ten not being in the ACC then being in the Big Ten. We are worth more to the ACC not being in the Big Ten than being in the ACC. I have no idea when or if either might come calling. But I bet you each has asked itself "do we move immediately on UConn" if we think the other may call them.

What it comes down to is this: UConn pays its way (is per-school revenue neutral) for both conferences, and it is the lynchpin to the northeast -- the only public school playing high level athletics in the New England/New York region of 35 million people. Strategically, whichever league captures UConn will control major markets, not just Connecticut, but also will have a leading position in New York and Boston.

The ACC clearly hadn't thought through the network economics when they chose Louisville, or they never would have passed on UConn. Stupid of them. But now that the SEC and B1G networks have reported earnings, the value of UConn is pretty clear even to Swofford and FSU.

It really comes down to the B1G and whether they want to follow Delany's strategy of controlling the northeast or some other strategy (eg AAU/research focused). If the B1G is even seriously considering UConn then I think the ACC has to offer, they can't afford to let UConn eclipse BC in New England, UConn-Rutgers eclipse Syracuse in NYC, Penn State eclipse Pitt in Pennsylvania, and Rutgers and Maryland dominate the rest of the northeast. Their northern schools, BC, Pitt, Syracuse would wither.

Their northern schools, BC, Pitt, Syracuse would wither.

And the flip side of that is if the Big Ten lets the ACC take UConn, the best they will do is share the football market in the Northeast and be totally out of the loop (as they are today) in hoops.

.-.
True, true, and true.

UConn's basketball is the Tiffany of college basketball branding. UConn basketball is a national brand.

UConn basketball in B1G=big win for all.

UConn hockey in B1G. Ditto. ACC does nothing for either UConn or themselves.

UConn needs men's lacrosse. Period. End of story.

Football--it will come along with resources but it'll be a work-in-progress. Frankly, UConn would probably initially do better in the ACC but maybe you can pull a Rudy.

I don't remember who posted about needing some hope, but seriously, UConn has hope.

University of Cincinnati, on the other hand: hope=Big 12 or bust=Dude twitter-thon.

TruDomGopher, your acknowledgement of UConn's success is much appreciated. However, I don't believe that championships mean anything to the B1G. I hate to be redundant, but if championships meant anything to the B1G, RU would not have been admitted. Let's face it the B1G has plenty of scrubs in it's conference and is really no different from any other P5. If the B1G really wanted a school that would compete for championships they would have already taken UConn.

@theDudeofWV this is from yesterday. "I think there are going to be geography changes in the next year or two redone and I think people are

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 2h2 hours ago
@knightbengal @theDudeofWV Can you provide link if possible. Thank you sir. If Mr O'leary said this I find it very interesting...very

ucf #noflyzone ‏@knightbengal · 2h2 hours ago
@flugempire @theDudeofWV it was on a 740 the game radio interview. The podcast is on Iheart. It should be up

ucf #noflyzone ‏@knightbengal · 51m51 minutes ago
@flugempire @theDudeofWV I just posted it on my tl. It was open mike. 12 min clip

@flugempire @theDudeofWV

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 28m 28 minutes ago
@knightbengal @theDudeofWV Yep. I just listen to the whole interview. Most interesting part is when O'Leary says he thinks....

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 28m 28 minutes ago
@knightbengal @theDudeofWV ....there will be geography changes 1 or 2 years from now. The rest of his comments were predictable..but yeah...

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 28m 28 minutes ago
@knightbengal @theDudeofWV I sure would like to know what he meant by "geography changes"...it sounded like geography changes in P5...huummm

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 24m 24 minutes ago
@knightbengal @theDudeofWV Thank you for providing me the link. O'Leary's perception seems to indicate shuffling of divisions in a P5...

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 23m 23 minutes ago
@knightbengal @theDudeofWV ...and that would help UCF possibly find a spot. His choice of phrasing"geography changes" is..well...peculiar.

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 11m 11 minutes ago
@knightbengal @posas13 @theDudeofWV Ha! I cant stop listening to his phrasing of "geography changes". Im perplexed

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 9m 9 minutes ago
@knightbengal @posas13 @theDudeofWV Cant figure out even a theory on what hus perception is....using that type of phrasing....stumped

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 5m 5 minutes ago
@posas13 @knightbengal @theDudeofWV You know what crazy workable theory works with O'Leary's odd phrasing"Geography changes" 2yrs comment?..

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 4m 4 minutes ago
@posas13 @knightbengal @theDudeofWV. ...just speculating.... O'Leary gets steam from old Georgia Tech contacts...GT open to Big Ten entry...

Greg Flugaur @flugempire · 2m 2 minutes ago
@posas13 @knightbengal @theDudeofWV. ...that crazy theory, while not doable IMO (ACCGOR) would fufill the " geography changes" portion.

Greg Flugaur
‏@flugempire
@posas13 @knightbengal @theDudeofWV Big Ten moving into the South could be what O'Leary THINKS MIGHT HAPPEN. O'Leary has deep GT roots.

Greg Flugaur‏@flugempire 8m8 minutes ago
@posas13 @knightbengal @theDudeofWV And taking the theory to its logical conclusion the ripple effect of this could very well benefit UCF

Note: It's at 10:10.

buddy, at the same time I joined boneyard, I joined a Rutgers board--based on my belief that Rutgers and UConn were going to be in the B1G. So far, the only thing I've gotten right in realignment was Rutgers. The reason: when I was at Minnesota in the late 70's/early 80's a prof told me then that Rutgers would be in the Big Ten someday. Had nothing to do with sports and everything to do with research. There was already cooperative research back then, and Rutgers was highly respected at the Twin Cities (and I would guess by other B1G schools, too). Actually, the Nebraska add surprised me because I thought the first add would be Rutgers. And I'm sure some people think I harp too much about academics and research, but it really is important to the B1G.

The B1G has regarded Rutgers as a champion for a long time--too bad it doesn't filter down to the athletic department.

As for UConn--everything has to come together, and it is coming together. You should be on your knees every night thanking the Almighty that you have Herbst because she really seems to understand what needs to be done and appears to be doing everything in her power to get it done.

If it weren't for the power of those UConn championships, this conversation doesn't happen. It's all important: academics and athletics feed each other. Championships alone have no value to the B1G, (that's what the SEC is for) but as a piece of the puzzle in the endless chase for research money and students, they are important because of the increased exposure, make it easier for the athletic departments to fund themselves, and make it easier to sell B1G schools for research funding.

But, if you ever get the chance, pull Delany aside and tell him that you don't think championships are that important to the B1G--I'd really like to know what he'd say.

I stand by my words. If athletic championships matter to the B1G, then what is RU doing there? The B1G may have regarded them as champions for a long time, but factually they are not and likely will not be for a long long time, if ever. I do believe that ultimately UConn will land in the ACC and when that happens that conference will take a huge stride in really dominating the Northeast. Hopefully they will realize it sooner rather than later, once FSU and BC come to their senses. RU alone will just not do it for the B1G.

I have a question: Do you want UConn to be a Big Ten school or Louisville, East? This is getting too weird for me--I'm on a UConn board arguing that UConn is B1G material and being told, "No, we're really more a Louisville wannabe. . ."

I'm going to bed. I just use Louisville and wannabe in the same sentence.

B1G football in East Hartford would do far more than the ACC in East Hartford. It would most absolutely resonate through New England, not just Connecticut. Midwest culture ties in perfectly with New England culture, since the some of the Midwest was New England spreading west! UConn would instantly succeed at least in atmosphere. If we can go back to being competitive as we were under Edsall, my guess is we'll have a waiting list for UConn football season tickets.

Well...Louisville just finished Top 25 in the Football AP again and Top 10 in the Coaches Basketball Poll.....there are worse things than wanting to have two good programs.

Geography aside, Louisville is consistently in the Top 25 and is decent in basketball as well,

At this point, I would trade Geno to Ohio State in exchange for membership.

Would you rather have the Ivy League be the Ivy League or be the Ivy League and a community college with a top 25 basketball program?

The basketball-only fans can only remember all the old rivalries with schools now in the ACC, and that tempts them to think it a good destination. But the B1G is better in every way except old rivalries. New rivalries would form.

Man I hope you are right. My skepticism stems mainly from the fact that were those motivations particularly strong we would be in one of those conferences by now.

I do think UCONN in the BiG duck*s BC and Cuse - putting them on a barren island. Of course neither of those institutions seems to share that concern.

Agree about the competition aspect having a positive effect on ticket sales. We will begin to see pieces of the puzzle on Saturday. AND, my thought on positive effects for UConn if admitted to the B1G: Instant sellouts of home games at current 40K capacity, immediate plans of temp. seating additions for home games with traditional B1G powerhouses (see Michigan game 2013), immediate start of construction of RENT expansion. Side effect: Annual dates with Snooki. Basically, if UConn were admitted to the B1G, there would be nothing but positive effects on the Husky football program.

They are very concerned. Enough to elicit a powerful fear to the point eyes open and jaws drop when you mention UConn going to the B1G.

Why the heck do you think fans from schools around us troll us and we don't need to troll them? Our trophy case does the trolling for us.
