There is a 0.0% chance that Rice would be brought in for football only. Rice does not move the needle what so ever in Texas, and would in no way allow the conference to monetize the state. If the B1G really wanted a Texas School, they should have approached A&M when The Big 12 was falling apart. The only way Rice gets in is if UT required it for their joining as full members as well. Not holding my breath on either happening for obvious reasons.

They are not full-fledged B1G materiel nor as an associate for football.

Vanderbilt has kind of a long history. Rice is like Emory. Great schools but snobs hold up their noses at new money. Having been on Rice's campus, and noting that Rice only became a full residential university somewhere around 1956-1965, it doesn't have that snobby appeal. The campus is amazing in its design, and its attempt to look like Harvard, but all the brickwork in the end is sterile. Kind of reminds me of all the brownstones in Boston's South End. Just because the rest of the city has history, it doesn't mean you can reproduce it with brick.

Take Vandy and Duke to keep Northwestern company in B1G. (Oh, UVa, UNC and Kansas, too). Add UConn (making a +6 / two 10 team divisions) and it all would be very, very interesting...

If you get to the point with two divisions of 10 teams, you effectively have two conferences or the world of college athletics circa 2000. The law of diminishing returns comes nto play at a certain point and the ACC with 15 in BB is pretty damn close. The NBE at 16 was there. Look at the bottom feeders/suckers in the uber sized leagues and look at how much they add. Their ROI is negative and they negatively impact earnings for the better teams. Not sure any TV contract would pay for 20 teams when 30% of the teams suck. Based on your proposal, Vandy, Rutgers, NW, Indiana, Purdue and ILL (and right now UCONN) would fulfill the sucks definition in football. 30% of a 20 team conference not to mention the scenario if they end up unequally weighted in the same division.

Flug commented on a Dude retweet of a NC State's janitor's son's tweet that the agenda for the B1G COP/C meeting includes a "Best of Boneyard" on the table for discussion. Obviously they want us to step up and come up with the ways and reasons to add UConn.

In the hypothetical 20 team league, who will watch Vandy/NW or UVA/Ill? How many years before teams play the marquee teams in the conference? Or do you split traditional marquee games and save that match up for the hoped for championship game?

If the P5 world ultimately becomes 4 20 school conferences (because if 1 goes to 20 then 3 other go there also with 1 ceasing to exist and 15 schools added to the mix), then you get an 8 team playoff and do away with the conference championship in FB with each winner of the 8 divisions being in the playoff pool. And then is it really 4 conferences or is it 8 leagues and the pecking order of the 8 will once again be defined by perception. And the value of the divisions becomes fodder for debate and ultimately dissolution into 8 conferences with regional identities because at the end of the day, the viewing world cares about Bama/Auburn, USC/UCLA, OSU/Michugan, etc.

This is interesting--you've essentially summarized ESPN's position with the B1G during the negotiations the led to the formation of the B1G Network. And, essentially, the ratings are in--hence the success of the B1G Network.
