Those rankings are for overall research expenditures. That definitely matters. It's relevant. It's useful.

But my (potentially flawed) understanding is that the AAU specifically emphasizes competitively funded federal research dollars. They also examine candidates through a per capita/size lens. That combination is apparently a large part of why a smaller schools like Tufts and UCSC recently earned invitations.

My alma mater ranks 83rd on the NSF research expenditures list with about $328 million in FY 2021. But only about $153 million of that derived from competitively funded federal research dollars. Their AAU aspirational peers were meanwhile did about an average of $399 million of competitively funded federal research dollars that same year.

@huskymedic do you have a copy of the big east bylaws? I googled for it and I could only find the UConn contract and the 2011 (old big East) contract.

That Providence wishful thinking. Honestly, I look forward not dealing with them as a conference mate. We can play 1:1 in Storrs and at the casino if they want to keep playing us.

The greater of the normal exit fee for the Big East or $30 million if we leave during or before our six full year of membership; $15 million if we leave after our sixth full year but before our ninth full year; and $10 million if we leave after our ninth year.

So, I believe it is $30 million through the end of 2026, but it may be through the end of spring season 2027. All things being equal, it might make sense to delay our exit date until we're passed the six full year, but that depends on how much money we are going to be making.

Withdrawal fee
If UConn decides to leave the Big East, it will have to pay a hefty fee. The terms of the contract state that UConn will be responsible for paying the conference $30 million if it withdraws within the first six years of membership. If the school bails within a three-year period after that, $15 million is owed. After 10 years, UConn would owe $10 million. A withdrawal fee can be split up into four payments, if necessary.

On June 24, 2019, the Big East formally approved an invitation for UConn to join the conference.[48] The UConn Board of Trustees accepted the invitation two days later, thus reuniting UConn with several of the schools against whom it competed for 34 years in the old Big East.[49] UConn and the AAC reached a buyout agreement the following month, clearing the way for UConn to become a member of the Big East on July 1, 2020.

It's not worth waiting three more years to save 15 million. They'll make that up easy.
