I'm assuming Army was in at Rutgers' urging. They schedule Army a lot, and are now panicking that they can't play FCS anymore.

Doubt it was Rutgers and people in New Brunswick do not even listen to their athletic department. Army has a lot of football history and while they are no longer on the level of the big boys today, no one is going to want to snub them because what Army represents.

Also playing the service academies is a good look for big universities. Helps the academies recruit the next generation of officers thought the country. We should incentivize P5 schools to schedule them.

Have Greg Flugaur's tweets turned into "key tweets?" Seems warranted based on excitement here.
No, he hasn't broken any actual real information other than the Maryland thing. The thing with him is he doesn't *try* to break news, he's a serial speculator who says he has some inside B1G info, but he's very clear that he's speculating from that inside B1G info, unlike Dood and Mh3 who claim to know everything that's going on and have sources up the wazoo in every conference around the world.

I wonder if this doesn't make football independence more likely in the medium term if more conferences view UConn as a P5 program. BYU going independent may turn out to be working for them if they could overlook the difficulties of getting a playoff spot. I don't think even diehard Cincinnati fans think they have a real shot, either. However, going Indy and playing B10, perhaps Pac12 teams may be better for exposure and ticket sales.

Independence would only be viable if the some combination of UCF, Cincinnati, Memphis, and/or Houston left the conference. At that point, both basketball and football would be in a graveyard.

I don't disagree with that, though it does surprise me that Texas, Oklahoma et al wouldn't want an opportunity to expand their brand in the Northeast.
I don't understand why a dying conference/demo with UT and the whole state of Texas wouldn't want to add Greater NYC and NE to double/rejuvenate viewership in the B12 to save themselves from eventual extinction. Most of the rest besides Okie whose fans seem to want out should encourage the move to save themselves...some of the lesser teams even in Texas are in danger of G5 status if it disbands. UCF/UConn make sense demographic/viewership wise if not geographically and WVU needs company.

At the moment nearly all of the B-12 believes WVU is too far from the base of the conference. The idea of going significantly further north and east must be very appealing to these schools.
If you believe the B12 on the LT's board they already regret bringing in WVU and wished they took L'ville so thats the regionality of their fans thinking your up against. And to them most care less about hoops in relation to CR.

You do realize the latest quote was me he was arguing with. :p And the poster here probably couldn't see the responses I gave via retweet. I'll add them below. I actually agree with all of his other points he made today, and was only taking issue with his ridiculous statements about "what it takes to get a game at Mariucci" (which he, a Gopher fan, spelled incorrectly) and that UConn playing in the Mariucci Classic this year was a result of some kind of lengthy relationship and discussion that was necessary in order to be invited to play there. Those points are categorically and provably false. It's the general aura of Gopher hockey fans that it's some kind of privilege to play them, and that you should bow at the altar of Don Lucia if he allows you to schedule his team. Completely preposterous.

@flugempire does MN have a building relationship with second-rate HE programs UVM and Northeastern - who they actually played on the road?

So hard only the likes of Bemidji, Merrimack, Huntsville, Northeastern, and Northern Michigan could do it.

B1G and UCONN have a growing relationship...this is the truth. Sorry..it just is. Do you know what it takes to get a road HCKY game @MINN?

lol no it doesn't

Greg Flugaur @flugempire
@slurpee387 It's takes a lot of talking...a building relationship to get an invite to Mariucci in any manner or form.

I most certainly did not realize that nor was I even remotely referring to you. I just happened to thumb around twitter today after the announcement and saw a few angry UCF fans complaining. Not to mention, the nonsense that fools like Bruce Feldman and Dan Wolken said. I was speaking in general terms, not at you. I didn't even see your tweet (nor would I have the smarts to put 2 and 2 together that Stefe = brass bonanza...although the "slurpee" part and your Yard avatar make more sense).

I have been watching this side thread for a while. My two cents says there is some truth on both sides. Is UConn P5 worthy? No doubt about it. Is it inevitable? No. If we were a slam dunk value adding program someone would have blinked. We have rehashed geography, history, football recruiting etc.

Perception is going to be the key. Ollie has taken care of his end. The football game yesterday helped. The fan base has to step up. There are plenty of $15 football tickets available. Snap em up. People don't like my sarcasm about driving in snow to hoops games. That's perception. If the base gets a reputation for driving through storms to fill the arenas. That helps. It says those guys are crazy. We want them in our conference.
I loved that Mizzou showing....thats got to have sent a message that FB is back.

Why not....they play in the toughest Division outside the SEC. And we play Navy as much if not more.

The B1G by itself is not enough, but if we could get this arrangement with 3-4 P5 leagues, independence becomes much more viable. Especially because if UConn and Cincinnati left the AAC, Navy would follow right behind. BYU, UMass and Army are already independent, and the MWC is dragging Boise down. There needs to be about 6 decent independents to make scheduling viable.

The AAC is a hell hole of a league with a nightmare of a TV deal. UConn will not survive 5 more years of both.

You know what BYU and UMass want for Christmas?

A conference.

No one wants to be independent, save Notre Dame....do you ever stop to wonder why?

Byu and Army could be in the AAC by noon tomorrow if they wanted. They don't. Do you wonder why?

You would think this would be easy to understand. If independence was so great, there would be a lot more independent teams.

Did the B1G designate the whole AAC as P5 qualifiers, or just UConn?

How did that AAC do on selection Sunday last March?

You would think it would be easy to understand.

Thing is, at that point why not just create a conference with those six. BYU, Cincinnati, Navy, Army, Boise, UConn is better than what we have now football-wise.

For football, you could, or at least create a de facto conference of independents. That affiliation should have a lot of TV value. I would throw UMass in there too.

Travel would be a killer for basketball. Boise and Byu could play in theWCC, and UConn/Cincinnati would need to play Big East or come up with something.

Next step is getting similar treatment from 2-3 more leagues.

Your plan is to sacrifice BB to make it harder for football and make less money and have less exposure?

Not the dumbest thing you have said.

I would say this post is the dumbest thing you said, but that is an impossibly high standard.

The only way UConn could make less money is if it played on public access. We play for free and get zero fan support for football because our schedule is a bushel of turnips. Even basketball attendance is starting to suffer because of the weak schedule. The Big East makes more per school on its TV contract for men's and women's basketball than UConn does for all sports. So, in summary, any other reasonable conference alternative will generate more TV dollars and more fans in the seats.

It is funny that the AAC lovers like yourself can never make a positive case for staying in a southern mid-major league with Tulane and Tulsa.
