ESPN is not UConn’s friend. But it’s also looking like ESPN is no friend to the ACC anymore with reports that they can pull the plug on the contract in 2 years. Who knows, maybe ESPN wants to turn the ACC into something resembling the Old Big East if/when FSU, Clemson, UNC leave.

They can’t, but for some reason, this dopey idea never seems to die

UConn is the ultimate value proposition for any conference willing to make the jump. I've long been a proponent of UConn joining The B1G at a graduated buy in, because I believe that football could be competitive with the middle of the conference, and there would be so much additional value added through M/W Basketball. I wish the conference saw things that way. Regardless, I'm rooting for you all to get a Big 12 Invite in the new year.

I guess this is progress, but if they think we are joining the big 12 to go 4-8 in football every year, they have no idea. On a level playing field we will certainly compete and our goal will be to win conference championships.
Exactly.

We could guarantee 4-8 right now with our current financial situation. If we get the injection of tens of millions of dollars from a Big12 contract, they had better watch out. I'm not sure they understand the UConn brand mentality: we want championships...

It’s just a gut feeling. I have nothing definitive on that end. I think our academics would be viewed positively. Just playing the hypothetical game. If the 3 new members are pro-UConn does that get us enough votes. Not entirely sure.
My guess is unless they get financial considerations to add new members, they aren’t voting for anyone unless they are coming for free.

SMU, Stanford, and Cal have full voting rights. Notre Dame has no voting rights in football matters. 75% is the threshold for approving new members.

There is no reason for the ACC to expand. The only way that will happen is if ESPN gives them a green light. It seems like they will have to remain static for a while, and I suspect most of the members would still be against UConn. The addition of the west coast schools to the ACC will only add more no votes. The only hope for UConn in my opinion is the Big 12. They will truly become a coast to coast mega conference and all those schools will improve with the addition of UConn.

it's kind of annoying to see some of these videos say "we just need them to win 4-6 games basketball is great" like do you expect us to not try to compete for the Big 12 crown? none of these programs are all time great, some of them are teams we've competed with before and have played better than, we're here to win and make money we think we earned while doing it.

Let em sleep on us. It's fine. Just gotta show them we're pretty good for a few years so they let us in.

Private equity supposedly maximizes undervalued products. What product is more undervalued than UConn?

ESPN's only loyalty is to money.

It also unsympathetically cuts dead weight.... like WVU. I actually like WVU. It was a big school for NJ kids that didn't get accepted anywhere else when I was growing up, so I know a few alums. But, let's be honest. It's a terrible school with budget problems, in a very poor and sparsely populated state (shrinking population). I'm not sure WVU is making the PE cut.

I've said this before but to me the only thing I see private equity doing is the very screwball sports destroying things that fans don't want because it will be about maximizing the dollars taken out of your wallet. For instance no on screen (jumbotron, scoreboard) replays. You can view all replays on the phone app for 20 dollars a game.

I knew a few of these Jersey kids. They were hard partiers when I met them in the years immediately following college graduation. The girls were very “friendly”. A few nights with that crew and I was wondering why I never considered WVU.

It would be a disaster. Worse by far than it is now.

The only way we should consider it is if they can pull the strings to get us into the B1G.

Otherwise it’s like selling off pieces of the AD to some sociopaths who won’t always act in our best interests.
