Nils Machowski visiting today

I get that scoring is always the headline, but I haven’t really seen us linked to anyone in the portal yet who can consistently break a defender down one-on-one (other than Wilkins) and get into the lane. It’d be nice to add a more athletic, downhill type, someone who can create off the dribble and open things up for everyone else.
Nothing against a catch and shoot guy like Nils, there’s definitely value in that but based on the little bit I’ve seen, he looks more methodical than explosive. Could be totally off there, just going off limited clips that I have seen

Great write-up by Storrs Central. Nil’s looks like exactly what we need off the bench for a 2G. Can he also swing over to PG for a few minutes a game in case we need to go 3 deep or if County is not ready? If this works out for us, this could be a key pickup for next year.

We all know this is the guy. High percentage 3 ball shooter with a well-rounded game. 4th year player, solid skills at the point, sees the floor, good passer. A one year fill in for Solo and some added depth/ insurance in the backcourt as well.

Leaves a spot open for the '27/28' season for Hurley and staff to work their recruiting magic and get another top guard in here. Along with Mullins and Demary most likely moving on that will be 3 big spots to fill.

Anyone have comments on Nils Machowski's defense?

This is exactly the type of guy I was hoping we'd pursue. Has played and started games in the B12, can clearly shoot it (90+ 3's last year), can fill it up (five games of 25+ last year - don't care who it's against), and has played enough games that you can assume he won't wilt against the pressure. If you watch film of international play, he did play some PG, so hopefully he's your third-string PG in addition to being a Joey C type off the bench.

If he's coming to campus, don't see how Hurley doesn't lock him in. I welcome the future Husky!

With the Machowski defense the standard opening is knight to C3.

I agree with you. I'm hoping that the staff views Silas, County, Soph Braylon, Jayden, and Landrew as guys who can get downhill. We literally had no one, like nobody (with Silas at like 60%), in the tourney who could consistently take someone off the dribble and create, and were relegated to jumpshooting and Tarris. I'm banking on the returnees stepping up that aspect of their game.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is UConn now 3-for-3 with transfer additions once they officially visit? If so, that's just lethal precision.

I love how Hurley and his staff don't have a wide net, but when they focus in, they snipe.
Seems like we don’t even waste time bringing guys in for an “exploratory” visit. I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys verbal before and the visit is a formality lol. The zoom call with the staff probably gives everyone all the info they need to make a decision

I imagine for the transfers there are a couple zooms to get to know them, the agent and Tom Moore hammer out a number they both can agree on, and then the visit is to really get that final approval on him as a person and sign the dotted line essentially.

Thought I saw from a poster in the old thread that he handled the point occasionally with good success. I see him as a poor mans Cam. Heady shooter who will learn to defend enough to give us time at the 2, and possibly step in at the 1. Might surprise. Don't think he'll have quite the hype or expectation that poor ole Mahaney had.

We must be the highest profile team going after him, so I’d be shocked if we don’t get him. I just really hope he’s not AM 2.0.

We need a solid backup for Silas. Imagine how this season would have spiraled if we didn’t have Mali.
Not too concerned about a Mahaney repeat as Aiden was brought in to fill starters minutes while this guy is likely fourth or fifth in the guard pecking order.

I believe that the deleted earlier thread had a post that said his team was awful defensively, but that he was net neutral, which suggested he was better than his teammates and that he'd project favorably on a notably better defensive team. Speculation was that he'd respond to coaching and greater emphasis on defense.

Good point…but I’m not sure Am could have filled Mali’s spot either. I think we need a Mali level pg at a minimum

Hurley doesn't trawl. He fly fishes.

I wouldn’t expect that to happen. Assuming we get Nils and a backup 4, that’s 10 guys already and Borges’ reporting from this week said the staff seems comfortable with the backup combo guard and County handling that role. I agree it’s a bit risky though

He fills a huge need for us.

We already landed two guys with letters that convert from hard consonants to H (Khamenia and Giltay) and every one knows you can't win a national championship unless you have 3, so it would be great if we landed Machowski (pronounced MaHowski). K, G, and C's be gone.

On another front my Patriots took Gabe Jacas in the draft last night, so I better start practicing my fricative pronunciation for next sports season.

I'm surprised we went combo guard over a traditional point. Guess it says that the staff really digs County. Which is great. It's also a bit scary to think what happens if County isn't ready.

Like in a perfect alternate reality orrr what?? cause We’re going after a backup PF now and that’s it. county and Nils are the backup ball handlers. To post something like this either means you haven’t been following along or you’re just being obstinate

Doesn't hurt that Nils and his Dad know Giffey. Wouldn't be surprised to find out that he may have helped facilitate the intro resulting in the OV.

I assume his handle is better than AM, then is he confident, doesn’t get rattled by a press which several teams in the BE will do.
