Del Rosario was highly rated in high school but it seems she is too slow at this level and at times seems lost as to what to do. Maybe adding Koval will push her to get on shapeKoval seems like an interesting pick up to me. Seems in a similar build of a player they already have in Del Rosario, slower big body post played. Maybe more skilled I assume?
I saw the McDonalds All American game. The two future SC players are talented wings, so playing time will be interestingI know some are questioning her draft stock with this move but I think you hit the nail on the head. She’s been one of the best scorers in the country for three straight years now. GMs aren’t going to forget that even if/when her senior season has a drop in production because of SC’s by-committee style. At SC she’ll get better on defense and show she can play in a system that’s not entirely built around her. She’ll also get the national exposure she didn’t at FSU.
From SC’s side I do think there are legitimate concerns about chemistry and retention, but for Latson this is a great move IMO.

Del Rosario is in the portal already. Koval won't be pushing her anywhere but out.Del Rosario was highly rated in high school but it seems she is too slow at this level and at times seems lost as to what to do. Maybe adding Koval will push her to get on shape
They both lost most of their Fr. from this season.Oh that’s what I meant instead of UCLA!
But the USC losses are a much bigger blow. None of UCLAs were in the top 7 in scoring or top 5 in minutes. They both lost most of their Fr. from this season.
For the short-term, I agree. But the USC losses are a much bigger blow. None of UCLAs were in the top 7 in scoring or top 5 in minutes.
Considering the late season losses and drop in performance, do you think Ivey was aware for awhile that her roster was collapsing or do you think it was sudden and she was caught by surprise? For the short-term, I agree.
However, when your underclass resources are low, what happens when you get hit with a roster turnover due to graduations and unexpected transfers? Well, can you say "Notre Dame?"Niele Ivey went two years with just one frosh commit and now one of those is at LSU and the other is rehabbing a lower-leg injury that had surgery in February. The Irish probably won't have Leah Macy until early next year, if at all. So they're scrambling.
In a similar vein, UCLA's three players didn't have the impact of Howell or Heckel, but there were very good HS and club players who could fill out a roster until given a chance. Oh, I hear Joni: "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone..."
That's a good question. My gut is that -- at the end of the day -- she was surprised, not just by the sudden nature of the transfers but of the almost immediate decisions made on where to go. And that begs the question, should she have been more aware of what was coming?Considering the late season losses and drop in performance, do you think Ivey was aware for awhile that her roster was collapsing or do you think it was sudden and she was caught by surprise?
I certainly don't know the rules, if there are any, that pertain to this portal meat market. Other than it must be wrong and against any rules for coaches to contact players before they enter it. Assuming that most coachesThat's a good question. For instance, Kylee Watson blew out her ACL in March 2024 and has been recuperating since then, but has actively stayed with the team, producing a "tiny mike series" that kept morale up and taking every road trip. She would've been a starter or heavy rotation player next year, but within a day of her transfer announcement, she ends up at TCU, which is coached by the same assistant coach that was at Oregon when Watson came aboard as a freshman. That would be Mark Campbell. And she's joining Maddie Scherr, a guard who was also a frosh at Oregon and transferred to TCU last year before taking a year off to mend an injury, as well.
Given what we all have heard many times, it is hard to believe all that came about in a matter of days or hours. And if Kylee, Scherr and Campbell were somewhat aware of this, others would be, too.
And if Ivey didn't know, hmm.... But if she did know, you'd think she would've surveyed the probabilities, too. This looks even worse since Kate Koval announced her transfer and -- boom -- was at LSU in a nano-second. Was Koval upset that after starting for the first 10 games and getting solid minutes, she was reduced to 10 or so minutes a game, often playing mop-up minutes with walk-ons? Or should Ivey had noted her high school coach making posts showing what Koval used to be able to do? Or was this a case of Koval being, well, lonely? Her brother was at LSU and still may be there? Were there warning signs? Or was this a case of deep sixing yourself?
This is all exacerbated by the fact that Ivey has only brought in one HS recruit per year two years running and her margins were razor thin. I think a lot of coaches -- even ones at successful programs like ND, USC, UCLA -- are learning there's a different dynamic at work now and need to adjust recruiting and retention policies accordingly. And fast.
If anything, that's the takeaway I hope Coach Ivey and her AD, Pete Bevacqua learn.
Hey...I'm not trying to single Campbell out. This probably happens in more instances than we'd like to know.I certainly don't know the rules, if there are any, that pertain to this portal meat market. Other than it must be wrong and against any rules for coaches to contact players before they enter it. Assuming that most coachesoperate as if it is, then it only makes sense that players are initiating the contact and shopping for their landing spots well in advance of the end of their seasons. Especially when it's coaches like Campbell that players have done previous business with and have relationships with. I agree with you, there's no way negotiations over, in some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars, are taking place in a 2-3 day span. I wonder how many of these coaches that are desperate to win would be willing to say they can't take the call until the portal opens. How can this whole thing be policed? I have no idea yet but it's obviously already out of control.
Regarding Ivey's recruiting, I can only guess that she's targeting mainly high end kids(talent) and if she can't get them, defaulting to filling the roster with transfers rather than offering and taking what she considers a 2nd tier talent that she feels she can develop into a starter level player over a year or two. As you say, recruiting and retention plans need to be better thought out.
I think this has a large hand in this. Saw a post from a college coach where they shared a screen shot of a message one of their players received from someone looking to gain more clients. My suspicion is that agents are a conduit for communication in a lot of these cases.Hey...I'm not trying to single Campbell out. This probably happens in more instances than we'd like to know.
It could start in an innocuous manner with a "hey, wouldn't it be great to play together again" and that gets escalated.
Or it could be a staffer or assistant coach going to a former travel coach to see how "such and such is doing." And now there are the NIL agents.
So, gosh knows how...
As for recruiting, complete agreement: Ivey aims high and when she scores, she does. Some would like to see that balanced out with some folks who can develop, be somewhat pleased to be there (at least for bit in this day and age).
We'll see....

I must be missing something here. I was under the impression that what you are suggesting is what was going to happen. Hmm.Friendly suggestion are keep this thread to new school announcements by transfers? Perhaps we could start a general thread on the impact of transfers itself?
A girl can dream, can't she?I must be missing something here. I was under the impression that what you are suggesting is what was going to happen. Hmm.
The same as the "portal entrants" thread.
Oh well, one can only dream...![]()
Is this one a rooster or a hen? I’m thinking rooster because of its crown. But in any case, it seems fluffy, healthy and well fed!
