You just made my day!
She isn't exactly stepping into a situation where the offense will be centered around her. Returning players Elle Ladine and Sayvia Sellers are very capable scorers. It often seemed like UW needed just one more scorer/playmaker, she should fit the bill exactly. It makes a sort of sense to me. She's pulling a "Plum." If she is allowed a free hand with that offense, she could be on the D1 leaderboard for all sorts of stats. That will get her noticed by scouts and agents. She's just spent a year watching Juju dominate an offense. I think she can figure it out. Also, being close to home is surely a plus.
And another ACC player joins Georgia:
Yeah I hear you. I just think she's so talented. Her and Olivia Miles I kind of felt like, any team would be lucky to have them and adjust to them. I think her and Fulwiley in transition is pretty crazy. I think with the announcement of Raven coming back they'll start Fulwiley, Raven Johnson, and Latson together. Raven is such a good defender and so physical, I think she can guard on the wing if needed. I agree Pao Pao was a great fit in terms of a shooter and an additional ball handler, with all of their great inside players. But if they reinvent themselves and play fast with their bigs of Edwards and Kitts and then Fulwiley and Latson. Idk it's kinda spooky. I get the concern in the half court, with a bit of limitations in terms of shooting. To be honest I don't love this move for South Carolina unless they were already going to lose one of Tessa/Fulwiley to the portal. I can't imagine both Milaysia and Tessa are staying now.
Latson's extremely talented, but implementing a player of her caliber is a risky move from a chemistry standpoint. One of two things will happen:
1. Taniya is either going to have to play a very reduced role compared to what she's used to, or
2. South Carolina's whole system is changing to utilize her
Either way I don't see this being a smooth seamless implementation like we saw when Pao Pao joined the Gamecocks in 2023-24. Best of luck to Dawn navigating this but I think she's playing with fire.
Dawn used to favor the Swiss Army knife types. Bree Hall is only the latest example. Super athletic, long limbed defenders who can also score a bit. Latson is not in that mould at all. First of all, the backcourt will be small, smaller than it's ever been for one of Dawns' teams -- 5'8" 5'8" 5'10" across the three of them. Admittedly, Milaysia is athletic enough to fill in some of what the Bree's have done over the years. But I think that won't come without a cost.Yeah I hear you. I just think she's so talented. Guessing it’s Tessa based on comments made by Fulwiley a couple weeks ago (just posted in the Sc Gamecocks thread here).I think the Latson move is fascinating. Dawn makes it very clear that her team is all about TEAM. Latson brings offense that they badly need. Assuming they both knew what they were getting into, I think Dawn molds Latson into a better pro prospect and upgrades her team at the same time. Would not be surprised to see Johnson or Fulwiley move on.

Tessa would be one of the most coveted transfers in the portal if she leaves. I know UCONN is beyond loaded on the wing but I could see Geno making a play for her. Her style of play would fit in extremely well at UCONN.
Don’t disagree, but SC needs guaranteed offense. Latson is very ball dominant, but sometimes you have o believe that you can make it work. I think she’s one of the best finishing guards in the country. Can’t let a conference rival snatch her up. She has another year left, right? To be honest I don't love this move for South Carolina unless they were already going to lose one of Tessa/Fulwiley to the portal. I know some are questioning her draft stock with this move but I think you hit the nail on the head. She’s been one of the best scorers in the country for three straight years now. GMs aren’t going to forget that even if/when her senior season has a drop in production because of SC’s by-committee style. At SC she’ll get better on defense and show she can play in a system that’s not entirely built around her. She’ll also get the national exposure she didn’t at FSU.Dawn doesn’t play with fire. she did once 7-8 yrs ago w/ Tea Cooper and she almost lost her whole team. Since then she is very particular on who gets recruited to SC. If there’s a problem, it is dealt with immediately and either it’s squashed or player moves on. you also don’t get to her level of success without vision, adjustment, & planning.
Latson & Raven are best friends & she was teammates with Fulwiley & Watkins in summer leagues. It’s not like she will be a stranger coming acting like she’s the sh$t. Reports from Gamecock sites are out, basically stating, that in her final year, she is primarily interested in having a chance to play in front of crowds/TV exposure for her game, winning, and getting ready for the pros - all thIngs she will get at SC.
coming in, I’m pretty sure she knows the type of program CDS runs & I’m pretty sure CDS knows what she is getting in Latson. why come to SC if you’re the most sought after player in the portal if you don’t already have an idea of what you’re walking into and what the plans for you are.
she’ll slide into the PaoPao spot and play 20-30 mins a game (depending on the opponent). she’s not going to average 25 per but 15-18 will do just fine
add USCAnd the losers ND, UCLA, Arizona, and PennSt
A combination. Closer to home, probably satisfied with whatever NIL she can get, a very close friendship with 2025 Brynn McGaughy who also chose to stay close to home, and plenty of PT. And no worries, if they are good enough, the WNBA will know about them.Of all the portal moves that I have read about, Avery Howell's move makes the least sense to me. With JuJu injured for a majority of next season, she would certainly have had a major role (probably a starting role) on USC's team next year. And she played very well (I thought) for USC this year, at least in the two games against UConn.
Did she and Lindsey Gottlieb have an issue with each other? Is this a financial thing for NIL (seems unlikely since she is not a "big name" and is unlikely to become one at either USC or Washington)? Or is it just a matter of being close to home?
Whatever the reason, it seems like Washington is unlikely to be as successful or get as much media and scout attention next year as USC will, even if JuJu is absent for much of the season. So if she aspires to a professional basketball career, this does not seem like a good move for her.
Indiana, loser. So far it seems like the Portal winners are SC (Latson), TCU (Miles), and Maryland (several).
