New PAC-12 Forming

The seven members that left the then BE a dozen years ago (yes, they left the football members) left almost entirely because they didn't want football ruling the conference.

I realize that many fans (and a few talking heads) are speculating that the BE needs to do something, but I am not sure that the member schools (who plan on remaining in the BE forever) feel they need to add members just for the sake of having a larger conference with more middle of the pack basketball programs.

If they do add any members it will be like minded schools.
100% agree which is why this could make sense. They don’t have to deal with fb. But, they could benefit from strong bb schools who also want to play FB but are outside of P4 structure.
reality is, UConn is not like minded to any of the other BE programs.
My only point is that there could be a benefit to BE by exploring this avenue and luring some decent BB brands into BE that might otherwise be left out.
The reality is, if UConn leaves, BE is cooked as major conference. Might as well create best scenario to keep the golden goose happy.
If they could add programs with BB success, create alliance with PAC, and keep UConn happy seems like something to be reviewed. Lot of if’s but that’s the difference of doing something and doing nothing.

Ha. For the bottom rung G5 conferences, it’s not about media deals, it’s about survival.
Ha, double pile driving deeper with further declining bottom rung conferences, survival impacted by additionally decreased fan/viewer interest in bottom rungers, and resulting shrinking media and overall program revenues. Consequently, minimally a few highly questionable gridiron conference life spans. G5, pfft.

I'm still surprised that some agreement to bring The Pac 2 and entire MWC together under one banner couldn't be met.
They kinda did without having to bring the lesser programs along. That being said, is Texas State that much of an upgrade?

Texas State was likely the best available option that would actually join the PAC 12.
Yeah that’s kinda my point. They’re no different to me than Wyoming or Nevada. I’m leaving out UNLV and Air Force because apparently they said no.

You’re starting, effectively, a new conference. Do you take just the cream or the cream and all the dregs too?
If you had the choice, why would you add Wyoming, New Mexico, Nevada?

Tx St is plan B after UNLV and Air Force turned down their invites. Still they’re better than Wyoming or New Mexico.

Reportedly, UNLV and/or its athletic department could not afford the MW buyout. USAFA, more of a wait and see approach.

Maybe the 9th or whatever Lone Star State football program and an unaccomplished athletic department to boot, reportedly rapidly fast growing Texas State has about 40K students on 2 campuses each about 1/2 hour from Austin. At first glance, not massively intriguing.

On the other hand, smack in the middle of a rapidly growing state and economy, Texas Friday Night Lights football religion, likely large alumni bases in DFW, Houston, Austin/San Antonio, etc, and potential to recruit guys leaving UT, A&M, Texas Tech, Houston, TCU, and other schools. Wouldn’t be entirely surprising for some alumni with oil and ranching pockets.

Maybe it works out for Texas State. Worst case, the school’s likely to be better known nationally than it currently is as a Sun Belt member.

I've read a lot of posts on message boards where people seem to think that any school can just park their basketball and Olympic sports in the Big East, no problem.

It doesn't work that way. Adding UConn was a unique situation for the Big East---a long-time member of the Big East, a championship program, in the conference footprint, familiar rivalries, and bringing a guaranteed crowd to MSG.

Not saying that the Big East couldn't add another football-playing school, but it's not as easy as some people think.
Akron and Denver say hi.

Akron and Denver say hi.
Those are just one offs, not all of their olympic sports. Just as UConn is in Hockey East.

I'm still surprised UNLV said no to the PAC 12, if that was the case. I understand finances but stuck in the MWC seems like a losing proposition. Even the PAC 12 Football Championship game is played in Vegas.

The new PAC-12 will sponsor 8 men's and 11 women's sports:

According to the document, the transformed Pac-12 will feature football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross-country, outdoor track and field, tennis and wrestling in men's sports.

On the women's side, the sports are basketball, cross country, outdoor track and field, soccer, volleyball, golf, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, gymnastics and rowing.

Many of the financial details were redacted in the document, but it was disclosed the media rights deal runs for five years, through June 30, 2031.

Washington State and Oregon State also have enhanced voting rights.

Within that same realm, the article also notes any new members to the league must get two-thirds approval and with WSU and OSU both in favor.

"It appears as if Gonzaga will get a full revenue share despite not sponsoring football, although several sections of 'the Gonzaga Provisions' are redacted," reads the article.

All revenue will not be shared equally, as was the case in the old Pac-12.

As stated in the story, "schools that earn revenue from appearances in the NCAA Tournament and/or College Football Playoff will get 50 percent of that net payment with the rest being equally distributed among the league's other teams."
  • "The membership agreement states a school leaving for a Power 4 conference must give at least one year's notice and with an exit fee equal to two times the Pac-12's average conference distribution; that "A4 Exit Fee" could be lowered based on when the exit takes place."
  • "A school can withdraw without penalty to join a Power 4 school upon the expiration of the grant of media rights, but if it joins a non-Power 4 conference upon that expiration, it would owe the Pac-12 three times the average conference distribution with more than a year's notice and six times that fee with less than a year's notice."
  • "A school can ask to withdraw just its football and/or basketball program while remaining in the Pac-12 for the rest of its sports but would lose its Board of Directors vote after that request, which must be approved by the remaining schools."

Oregon State and Washington State going from a conference of USC, Oregon, Washington, and Stanford to Texas State and Utah State is actually so so sad

Could be worse. It will be comparable to the NBE in basketball with Gonzaga, San Diego State, Utah State, Colorado State, and probably the best or close to best G5 football conference. Not a great result but not awful. Step down in prestige but not an awful result competitively.

-> The Pac-12 has now pivoted its focus to adding a football-only member, sources told me. Adding a ninth football-playing member would create an eight-game conference football schedule, relieving the burden of finding one more non-conference game. It would also add tonnage and value to the Pac-12’s TV deal.

Who are the candidates? Is the University of Memphis still a target? How about another Texas-based football member? UTSA? Rice University? Someone else? <-

-> “As we’re evaluating additional members, whether they’re football-only, basketball-only, or full membership, it’s important they’re members that are adding value in the areas that are important to us,” she said. “That they’re adding value in terms of the competitive metrics we want to achieve, that they’re adding value in terms of our national brand and how we’re perceived in the marketplace, that they’re adding value in terms of our commercial enterprise, that they’re adding value in our leadership room.”

Which schools add value? When is the right time to take another expansion bite? Immediately? Or after a cooling-off period and some thinking? <-

This guy keeps saying Memphis FB-only plus Big East as if it’s a guarantee the Big East would say yes to them. Not buying it.

Should Memphis get that deal, I have to imagine our interest level would change.

The river runs through campus. The group plunge is traditionally reserved for conference championships, bowl announcements, and has become a post-graduation commencement ceremony ritual.

“What better place to celebrate?” Lindsey Olsen, a Texas State deputy athletic director, told me…..

Not sure this is the time for celebratory jump into a river in Texas.

I really don’t want them to add Memphis as football only and I really don’t want BE to accept them for Olympic sports either.

If PAC wants a football only school I hope it’s Sacramento State for a fractional revenue share.
