New Head Coach Criteria/Wishes

To me, the rules have changed so completely that having won in college in the past is less important. Coordinators and assistants will coach. You need someone who can figure out how to allocate the salary pool among potential recruits, potential transfers and returning players. That's job #1, and I'm not even sure how you evaluate that other than from interviews as the rules are changing so materially so consistently.
That's why I like nfl guys. They out together a roster year to year.

I’m ready to see a coach who actually acts like he wants to be here 12 months a year.

His stupid Twitter profile said Sun Valley for the last 4 years.

Today he changed it to Fort Collins.
And this speaks volumes...

I like this guy Dan posted by @SwingDog in the Moving UConn thread. His main point is hiring a big-time coach. He was saying just yesterday I believe we have to ante up and pay Mora but I don't think it's all about the Benjamins with Jim

Yes I agree we need a coach that can recruit on the East Coast. We also need a coach that can attract QBs to UConn and be able to recruit top HS qbs that can compete from day 1. To be a competitive school we can’t just get portal guys from Maine. Yes I love Fagnano but we need to be able to get this caliber year in and year out.
That sounds like Penn State's Terry Smith to me. A Northeast guy who can recruit. He can bring some players with him too. Even lesser Penn State players are likely better than most of our players and recruits.

What if UConn can find that coach that can compete every year and not have to depend on the transfer portal so much. Yes I know today’s college landscape is depending on the transfer portal but would be nice to get high caliber guys from high schools to develop and succeed.
Need the portal. You need to know how a player will perform against college age players.

This feels so Tom Bradley-ish... Only difference is we are in a little better position as a football program than back in 2011 when Edsall 1.0 ended

My only problem is that Dante is a sophomore. If he was a senior I would think heck yes. But seeing as Tony has been there for a while now, I'd expect that they want Dante to get that yale degree.

But maybe his former AHC/OC/QB coach is an option...Kevin Cahill.
he's only a soph in the Ivy. everywhere else he's a redshirt freshman.

A mostly lower level coordinator who only has 3 years experience as a HC — and only in the FCS. I’ll pass.

Ooooh my blood is boiling. Knew about the twitter pic and banner changing didn't know about this massive slap in the face. Absolute jackass, this feels almost worse than Edsall.

I'm glad you pointed this out, cuz that puzzled me over the years with his Sun Valley tag. It's like he didn't want his identity to reflect being based on the East Coast, he was merely just employed by an entity on the East Coast. It's another underhanded slap in the face that on Day 1 he's a Colorado guy.

Jim Mora's tenure at UConn always felt transient, a perception underscored by his decision never to purchase a home in Connecticut. As a West Coast personality, he seemed to view the role as a proving ground to reestablish his coaching credentials. His subsequent move to Colorado State aligns with his personal interests, such as skiing, and offers a lower-pressure environment where he can likely conclude his career.

This situation simply underscores the need for UConn to find a coach fully invested in the program's long-term future. The ideal candidate would have established ties to the East Coast, a demonstrated record of success, and a hunger to build a winner. I would even support targeting a highly successful FCS head coach who embodies these qualities.

Terry Smith is not leaving Penn State. He either gets the full time job or stays on with the new staff

that doesn't bother me per se.... but its clear that the new game of football is high roster churn and recruiting along with a lot of technological and information support. The coach that can wrangle both wins.

My worry is a lower division coach won't be able to handle the churn and recruiting and then do the dance of information support.
