New Haven Post Game Thread

He doesn’t play or move like he wants the ball. Going back to confidence, again.

Someone who wants the ball makes the cut because he sees the chance to score.

He stays behind the arc. He's thinking he will be open for a corner three. But the guy on Solo drifts far enough back to cut off that pass. Nothing wrong with it. But given the result, cutting would have been a better option.

This is a good point. And yet the +/- for the team is much better when Ross is on the court as shown in the two spreadsheets posted on this page.

@auror you have pointed out that Ross's defense is the reason for the +/- improvement the team has when he's on the court. My question to you auror does any of the analytics factor in how players perform when they are taking the role of setting up plays on the offensive end. For example in the Brian Kervick review of the New Haven game on Storrs Central he has a feature "Set of the Week". He wrote this:

The set of the week features Solo cutting through, a decoy DHO at top, a back screen for Karaban, followed by Solo running off staggered screens for an open three.

In that play Ross is doing the back screen for Karaban. He then leaves that player and sets up the staggered screen for Ball while directing Koroma to set up the second staggered screen. This frees up Ball as he circles to the top of the key. Ball misses the shot but gets fouled and makes his three foul shots. So I'm sure Evan gives Ball full credit in his offensive metrics but does his analytics give Ross and Koroma any offensive value in this play?

Part of the problem for Ross on offense is his hesitation taking shots or driving to the basket. But how much of this is a factor of the coaches prioritizing other players over him on the offensive end versus a confidence issue? When a player is told he is option 4 or 5 it has to impact how he plays.
Ross’ points can be seen as a bonus. He clearly has value on defense - he’s the only guy we have with guard quickness and forward length. Even if he gives up a couple baskets - he usually makes his guy work for them. There are no shutouts in basketball.

To add to his role, he doesn’t necessarily have to score, but he can do some other things to increase his value. He's 6-7, athletic, and he can dribble, no reason he can't fly in there for some defensive rebounds and turn around and lead the break (something Liam, Castle, Jackson, Martin and DHam would all do from the 3). Putbacks are more challenging if you get a body put on you, but showing a nose for the ball and keeping a possession or two alive. He used to be a point guard before his growth spurt, so let's see a couple assists (he did have one decent post feed that led to a foul on Reibe). He seems like he's been a little more active in the passing lanes getting deflections, which is good too.

He needs to have more crooked numbers in his stat line, other than points.

Not with that attitude there aren't
Bethesda women were shut out until the third quarter by Cal State Northridge. Then hit a three to cut the Marador lead to 67-3. So i guess it did almost happen.

Rewatching the New Haven game with a focus on lousy defense on straight line drives to the basket.
Demary and Ross with the defensive reputations were the prime culprits.
Demary gave up baskets on drives in the first half at 3:30, and 2:43. Second half at 19:20, 17:24, 10:10, and fouled sending his guy to the line at 7:55. That is 6 straight line drives allowed by the guy who is supposed to be the source of our defensive improvement..
Ross gave up 3 drives and fouled all 3 times, 5:20 1st half and 3:39 and 3:02 second half. The last was an 'and 1'.
Ball gave up 2 but the first I believe should have been a moving screen so I submit only 1 time he got burned.
Millender was taken badly 1 time.
Stewart 0 was not beaten.
Smith was not scored on but actually was taken to the hole a couple times.
The baskets over Reibe and Karaban were just good offensive plays where our guy played good D but the guy made shots.
Rewatching for this was a useful exercise for my perspective on so many New Haven baskets on so few assists. It wasn't everybody that was getting beat, nor was it the players with poor defensive reputations.

I think it was 72 to 0 before the basket. Bethesda only had 4 healthy players and a fifth that was not feeling well and took herself out at times leaving 4 on 5. I think the final was 102 to 13 but I didn't recheck.

Columbia hot from 3pt range (7-12) is the main reason. Though this was as predictable as the sun rising and setting. Many teams play out of their minds vs. UConn and regress to the mean afterwards. With that said, they've gone on a run and closed it to 48-34.
Columbia ended up winning by 19

Just what I was going to say. What about Bethesda-Cal State Northridge women, huh?
