Seriously? It's been like that forever. Weeknight or cupcake games those fans don't show in Gampel. A weeknight AND cupcake games are worse. Not an issue in Hartford because the drive home is much shorter.

Hey it's ok, Samson Johnson is gone, you don't need to keep bashing him at every opportunity.

In some games we will probably see more minutes from the defenders and more bench time for some of the scorers; playing a more slowed down game possibly. Who are the very good defenders on this team?
 
The foul fiasco against MSU hung heavy over UConn's defensive tentativeness against NH. Guys were simply trying not to foul. It's remarkable that Reibe, who was backed down repeatedly by his man, committed exactly one foul. He was a guy simply trying to stay on the floor. The team simply pulled back its defensive aggressiveness with the MSU debacle in mind and the awareness that they were down three players. All in all, a 55-point defensive effort in not a catastrophe. The final score was not 109-85. Even in the 2nd half, when NH seemed to be scoring one-on-one on every possession, they scored exactly 31 points. They had few uncontested baskets. They had to work hard for what they got, against a team desperately trying to avoid the touch foul.

As of right now, Silas is labeled to be one. Last night he did not look the part. The rest are average to below average defenders.

I am worried about perimeter defense because it was a problem early vs. unathletic teams last year and was exasperated vs. good competition. It was bad last night. Mullins won’t help he’s a twig and will get bullied. If it doesn’t get fixed Reed will be in foul trouble all year, similar to Samson/Reed last year.

I agree shooting and layups will be fixed. Off shooting night maybe the jitters.

To be fair:

1 Down two starters and Furphy
2 their best played was playing against pur 2nd string frosh center
3 While they hit 44% FG their 3 starting guards were a collective 2 assists and 6 turnovers. Pasha took the most shots and was 70% fg though on 3a was 1-6
4 AK had double double, 60% fg and 75% 3pt
5 Stewart in 24 min had 11 pts, 6 reb, 2 steals, a block and only 1 TO
6 Solo had 18 pts on pedestrian shooting but got the harm a team high 7 FT made all.
7 Millender for 6 min had 3 pts, 1 reb, 1 steal, 1-2 3s.
8 No one fouled out - 16 total fouls
9 we shot 48%

Totally different game with Tarris and Braylon in we get more skill, taller backcourt and would have drawn more fouls on their frontcourt.

Now gotta worry about AZ- Koa Peat dropped 30 on Fla.
 
I thought Koroma did a great job hedging, generated a couple turnovers by being so aggressive. Although one he tried to take coast-to-coast when Stewart was wide open trailing.

Ross missed 2 early 3s, both of which were good shots in the flow of the offense, and was clearly hesitant to shoot his way out of the lineup after that. Needs to find a way to keep being assertive even when his jumper isn’t falling.
 
And where did all the Newton bashers go? When he arrived it took a minute before we got the AA version and many were riding him until then.

But Demary and Smith should be instant offensive generals by the first game of the season?

Team defense also takes time - last year by post season our D was much better than season start - no reason to believe it won’t get better.

The very good defenders are probably Smith, Demary and possibly Millender as well as Karoma. The remaining good defenders are the ones that get to play because Hurley said they will not be playing if they don't play good defense. I think Stewart and at times and possibly Ross will fit in there so it is up to them and that can be inspiring if they have the talent and where with all to do so. Someone has to be the chief defender (against opponents best player other than a big) and that would probably be Demary. He's got a lot on his plate right now so he will need others to help. I think it will come down to minutes and if some players aren't pulling their weight (either cannot or will not) defensively they will be seated if the occasion warrants it. If you only produce on offense and you're not having a decent shooting night you can have a seat while someone off the bench slows down the opposing offense. I think Hurley had this in mind when he built the roster. I hope Dan Hurley will watch the New Haven coach's demeanor when he sees the tape. His attention and communication was razor sharp on his players and not so much the officials. He got his players attention and it was very evident.

I think Ross back rimmed both, but were on line and good looks. The kid goes in there juiced up, so not surprising he's a little long on his looks. In general very good form and like you said, in the flow. Key for him will always be hitting one early, or else I can see him getting in his head and hesitant.
 
I love AK but…. I would like to see him stop and take his floater instead of going to the hoop. Still can’t overpower guys and will be more challenging when the competition gets better I don’t know his percentage going to the hoop but he has difficulty finishing to me. Haven’t seen his floater this year yet and thought he was successful with it in past years. Want to see that from him. Loved seeing J Stew go to the hole aggressively though.

This is hilarious when you go look at the total scoreboard, because you just went through and chose the teams who won big and ignored the other close games against bad competition

Google the "marshmallow test." I've mentioned at least once every two or three years, the preschool marshmallow test. A good number of the people here who post after a loss would never pass the marshmallow test. With UConn's success now we've got people posting that kind of crap after a win.

PT might depend a lot on whether he can defend against PF's or even wings if he has the ability at this level. Also, Tarris has a bad habit of getting in foul trouble and opponents will go after that. Dan Hurley has prioritized defense and I think this kid can help us with that. We shall see.
 
UConn will be fine but expectations need to be reset. This is nowhere near a championship caliber team like we saw a couple years ago. Which is fine, winning three in four is insanely hard to do.

Mullins and Reed are expected to be very good defenders as well. Millender is more an emergency sub if things go wrong. I don't think Hurley needs to watch the New Haven coach to figure things out, Hurley has actually done fairly well with this whole college coaching thing.
