New Haven Post Game Thread

Who's notably abscent from this thread?
I’m here. Lol

Not many crazy thoughts. Ross regressed aggression wise but it wasn’t as bad as before. He looked more comfortable tonight than even pre MSU. Defense was great per usual outside of that one drive where the offensive player made a really good move. He had probably 10-15 good defensive possessions (not sure what the actual number is, could be hyperbole) and that was the one people want to focus on where he was t even out of position. Just a good move lol

As far as everyone else. It looks like a team where everyone is fighting for minutes and nobody knows their roles. Having Reed back to have a paint presence will be 100x helpful.

Was encouraged to see Stew be aggressive and have proper plays called for him. Need more plays for him and less for Karaban. As he showed today, he doesn’t need heavy useage to get 19 and 10. But Stew absolutely needs the play calls to be effective and may be better at being that focal point anyways.

Overall, I’m not rushing to any judgement until we get Reed back. Then want to see how we play against BYU.

Tennessee and Michigan State both won by far less than UConn did. And Auburn got taken to overtime
Also tonight:

UNC 94 - Central Arkansas 54
St Johns 108 - Quinnipiac 74
Arkansas 109 - Southern 77
Alabama 91 - North Dakota 62
Kansas 94 - Green Bay 51
Michigan 121 - Oakland 78
Illinois 113 - Jackson St. 55
Louisville 104 - SC State 45

Most other top teams made much more of a statement tonight, is all I'm saying. Does not mean we're doomed. I felt more at ease after watching the post-game presser.

Not sure why opponents seem to be able to iso our guards and center so consistently. Hurley mentioned too many straight line drives with players strong side, but seems like more than just that. This is what all the BE teams will do unless we figure it out. Some is better on ball, some is better switching but still something seems off with defensive spacing and how help doesn't seem to be there. This kind of grind games sets us up for Seton Hall type loses and 30 foul type BE games.

48%/35%/85% isn't bad shooting, NH didn't give up a lot easy and took lot of clock time on offense and only had 11 turnovers. 108 total shots and 34 foul shots is not a lot for a game, St. Johns had 136/53 and Arizona/Florida had 131/68.

Nice reduction in fouls and this is the second game on Alex's return to form. I'll take it! A few mistakes and headscratchers but it's the "first" game of the season and against NH.

There are times i feel like Hurley leans into the whole ‘junkyard dog’ defensive mentality just a little too much. Like he’d be happy winning 22-3 because the defense held the other guys to 3 points.

How many of those teams are down 40% of their starters?

100% agreed. Those teams looked far more cohesive and athletic. I dropped the last 3 minutes of that awful game to cleanse my eyes with some good hoops.
We don't have 2 of our 5 best players, one of which is our low post beast and the other our best NBA prospect.

If you didn't already know this is not going to be an athletic team by UConn's standards you haven't been paying attention.

The current perimeter defense will funnel opposing guards to Reed and get him into foul trouble.

If you were watching Arizona and Florida and their size at all and aren’t worried about this I don’t think you’ve watched much basketball. Very concerning.

I like to watch early and say”first real game lots to like” I didn’t feel that ever last night. Actually lots to be concerned about. Long way to go!

Sure, and Mullins. We just look sloppy and incohesive. The brand of basketball through 3 games so far has been an eye sore. I wouldn't feel great for the unit we flashed tonight to win even 1 of our big 6 OOC games. It's clear as day Mullins is a key to any chance of a run this year.
I am hoping that this isn't the new free flow style of basketball that Danny's been talking about. 11 assists is atypical of teams from the last few years.

Hurleys biggest disappointment was what I had been commenting about in chat, the passing or lack thereof. There were the bad passes of Solo, trying to make a difficult pass to Koromo twice, who if he caught it, would have been in a difficult spot to do anything with it. To me thats bad basketball IQ or sense. And there is also the lack of passing attempts when we should be making them. Like Koroma's 4 on 1 when he just awkwardly tried to lay it in, instead of making an easy pass. And zero passes in the pick and roll. And maybe one pass to a cutter to the basket.. This is the area where we are so far removed from our 2 championship teams.

What game were you watching? I saw Ross get blown by on the perimeter 2x. One time Solo was there to help with a weak side block. It’s low level basketball IQ and slow feet, a problem with most of our perimeter.

Reminds me of last year in a very disappointing way, but down Reed, Mullins, Furphy is obviously a factor.
We were playing New Haven. We should have won by 30 playing 3 on 5. That was an AWFUL performance. All the crap about how we have so much depth… maybe but none of it is any good it seems. If we need Tarris Reed to dominate New Haven, heaven help us if he is out for any length of time. Yikes!

UNH never had a chance, but they did a good job not getting completely destroyed up until the end. We had a (relatively) rough first 28 minutes, missed a lot of open shots in the paint and from the perimeter. But telling myself it'll all be good when Braylon/Tarris are back

I can't wait for the day Hurley tells Silas to go get buckets. He's playing a super facilitator role, similar to Newton when he first got here. But we know the scoring is there and waiting to come out

Really solid game from Stewart. Well rounded in the first half and came out with a mission to score to start the second

Ross was a DOG on defense. Wish we saw more offensively, although he did have a 3 taken away because of a Reibe offensive foul

Malachi can get to the rim at will, just needs to slow down and stay in control. He hit a late floater instead of forcing it to the rim and then hit a 3 right after when the defense went under the screen. Good to see the adjustments, better late than never!

Maybe an unpopular take tonight but I'm excited for Reibe. I don't care that he got scored on a lot, he was playing good defense and gets in good positions offensively. He needs to make quicker decisions with the ball and needs to be stronger on the boards, but he'll be really good when he figures those two things out

Solo and Karaban had a combined 8 points on 2-9 shooting before their threes late in the first half. Solo came alive and exploded early in the second half while Karaban was quiet until 6-7 minutes to go. They both ended with a lot of points (AK 19 and Solo 18) but definitely not the offensive dominance I thought we'd get

But at the end of the day, THE HUSKIES ARE BACK BABY! Let's go UConn!

Nothing better than a response like this. No complaining. No sky is falling. Just objective and reasonable.

I think most programs with 2 of their starters down would be satisfied with this margin of victory. Yes there are many areas of improvement but isn’t that what the cupcakes are for? They will figure it out. Hopefully Tarris is back soon.

Arizona is going is nuts to butts going to drive the out of the ball on UConn. Better figure our defense fast
It will be interesting to see how Dan juggles the talent in the bigger matches. We have some very good defenders and they have a place on this more versatile team. In some games we will probably see more minutes from the defenders and more bench time for some of the scorers; playing a more slowed down game possibly. Confident our staff will figure out how to get the best out of this team of Huskies as it molds them into an increasingly integrated team. This of course will probably drive the BY crazy until we start to see the light of what the coaches are trying to do. The greatest way to pass a long dark winter is Uconn bb. Let the games begin!!

Hard to say much. Solo is gonna have the ball in his hands a lot this year when it matters as he should. AK looked good. Koroma is gonna be a nice addition.
The first episode of Seinfeld wasn't great either.

The doom and gloom with a win that was never in doubt down two starters and Furphy is bizarre. We may not know anything until we play BYU. We’ll live. The one thing to be concerned about was the inability of our guards to stop dribble penetration. Other than that, it was UNH coming off a win against Michigan State.

Not sure it's doom and gloom. I tend to think it feels a little too much like last year. A lot of these players look exactly the same. One thing you want in your roll back players is to see a connected feel to them (AK, Solo, Stew, Ross) after being in the system together for 3 years. Isn't that the point of having continuity? This has looked like a disconnected mess so far. I have found it hard to watch.

Some of it may just be a symptom of having two brand new PGs. Malachi Smith looked like a train that went off the rails yesterday. It may take awhile for them to congeal. I will say this, our returners aren't picking up the slack.

Very much a lame game. Ball cannot defend people off the dribble. No rim protection. Periimiter shooting may be a problem until Mullins. New Haven played the game very well. Lots of one on one, 3 assists, not that many teams play this way. Wonder if they could do the same vs. zone. Reibe benefits with the playing time, Stewart and Ross will bring some good play this year.
Good in one way that in NCAA tourney teams play differently and now they have seen it.

Whew, talk about overreaction.
To compare this team to any of the national champs is a disservice to those winners.
This team is new at guard and playing short.
IMO, Danny did a great job of getting minutes for everybody. At this point guys are still learning the system. Tristen Newton in January was a different player than the November version.
It was disheartening to see a new D1 team's guards (plural) fly by our supposed stud PG to the rim but players are human and to think they have the same level of adrenaline as their opponents in a game like this, well it's just not so. No excuse but one thing you can believe, Danny will instill the UConn way into Silas.
Keep the faith. We're so talented.

The performance was unacceptable, we have a standard of excellence here. We will be fine though, lots of correctable things to work on.
