New Haven Post Game Thread

It will be interesting to see how Dan juggles the talent in the bigger matches. We have some very good defenders and they have a place on this more versatile team. In some games we will probably see more minutes from the defenders and more bench time for some of the scorers; playing a more slowed down game possibly. Confident our staff will figure out how to get the best out of this team of Huskies as it molds them into an increasingly integrated team. This of course will probably drive the BY crazy until we start to see the light of what the coaches are trying to do. The greatest way to pass a long dark winter is Uconn bb. Let the games begin!!

Who are the very good defenders on this team?

The foul fiasco against MSU hung heavy over UConn's defensive tentativeness against NH. Guys were simply trying not to foul. It's remarkable that Reibe, who was backed down repeatedly by his man, committed exactly one foul. He was a guy simply trying to stay on the floor. The team simply pulled back its defensive aggressiveness with the MSU debacle in mind and the awareness that they were down three players. All in all, a 55-point defensive effort in not a catastrophe. The final score was not 109-85. Even in the 2nd half, when NH seemed to be scoring one-on-one on every possession, they scored exactly 31 points. They had few uncontested baskets. They had to work hard for what they got, against a team desperately trying to avoid the touch foul.

As of right now, Silas is labeled to be one. Last night he did not look the part. The rest are average to below average defenders.

Nothing we saw last night won’t and can’t be fixed. No Reed and Mullins will be fixed. Literally throwing the ball away, will be fixed. Going 10-21 on layups will be fixed. I’m not worried in the slightest. We make layups and stop just giving the ball up and we win by 30+. We’ve looked better against better comp. If you’re scared get a dog.
I am worried about perimeter defense because it was a problem early vs. unathletic teams last year and was exasperated vs. good competition. It was bad last night. Mullins won’t help he’s a twig and will get bullied. If it doesn’t get fixed Reed will be in foul trouble all year, similar to Samson/Reed last year.

I agree shooting and layups will be fixed. Off shooting night maybe the jitters.

exacerbated vs good competition

not to be confused with mastur .......competition

To be fair:

1 Down two starters and Furphy
2 their best played was playing against pur 2nd string frosh center
3 While they hit 44% FG their 3 starting guards were a collective 2 assists and 6 turnovers. Pasha took the most shots and was 70% fg though on 3a was 1-6
4 AK had double double, 60% fg and 75% 3pt
5 Stewart in 24 min had 11 pts, 6 reb, 2 steals, a block and only 1 TO
6 Solo had 18 pts on pedestrian shooting but got the harm a team high 7 FT made all.
7 Millender for 6 min had 3 pts, 1 reb, 1 steal, 1-2 3s.
8 No one fouled out - 16 total fouls
9 we shot 48%

Totally different game with Tarris and Braylon in we get more skill, taller backcourt and would have drawn more fouls on their frontcourt.

Now gotta worry about AZ- Koa Peat dropped 30 on Fla.

I thought Koroma did a great job hedging, generated a couple turnovers by being so aggressive. Although one he tried to take coast-to-coast when Stewart was wide open trailing.

Ross missed 2 early 3s, both of which were good shots in the flow of the offense, and was clearly hesitant to shoot his way out of the lineup after that. Needs to find a way to keep being assertive even when his jumper isn’t falling.

And where did all the Newton bashers go? When he arrived it took a minute before we got the AA version and many were riding him until then.

But Demary and Smith should be instant offensive generals by the first game of the season?

Team defense also takes time - last year by post season our D was much better than season start - no reason to believe it won’t get better.

The very good defenders are probably Smith, Demary and possibly Millender as well as Karoma. The remaining good defenders are the ones that get to play because Hurley said they will not be playing if they don't play good defense. I think Stewart and at times and possibly Ross will fit in there so it is up to them and that can be inspiring if they have the talent and where with all to do so. Someone has to be the chief defender (against opponents best player other than a big) and that would probably be Demary. He's got a lot on his plate right now so he will need others to help. I think it will come down to minutes and if some players aren't pulling their weight (either cannot or will not) defensively they will be seated if the occasion warrants it. If you only produce on offense and you're not having a decent shooting night you can have a seat while someone off the bench slows down the opposing offense. I think Hurley had this in mind when he built the roster. I hope Dan Hurley will watch the New Haven coach's demeanor when he sees the tape. His attention and communication was razor sharp on his players and not so much the officials. He got his players attention and it was very evident.

I think Ross back rimmed both, but were on line and good looks. The kid goes in there juiced up, so not surprising he's a little long on his looks. In general very good form and like you said, in the flow. Key for him will always be hitting one early, or else I can see him getting in his head and hesitant.

I love AK but…. I would like to see him stop and take his floater instead of going to the hoop. Still can’t overpower guys and will be more challenging when the competition gets better I don’t know his percentage going to the hoop but he has difficulty finishing to me. Haven’t seen his floater this year yet and thought he was successful with it in past years. Want to see that from him. Loved seeing J Stew go to the hole aggressively though.

Also tonight:

UNC 94 - Central Arkansas 54
St Johns 108 - Quinnipiac 74
Arkansas 109 - Southern 77
Alabama 91 - North Dakota 62
Kansas 94 - Green Bay 51
Michigan 121 - Oakland 78
Illinois 113 - Jackson St. 55
Louisville 104 - SC State 45

Most other top teams made much more of a statement tonight, is all I'm saying. Does not mean we're doomed. I felt more at ease after watching the post-game presser.
This is hilarious when you go look at the total scoreboard, because you just went through and chose the teams who won big and ignored the other close games against bad competition

Google the "marshmallow test." I've mentioned at least once every two or three years, the preschool marshmallow test. A good number of the people here who post after a loss would never pass the marshmallow test. With UConn's success now we've got people posting that kind of crap after a win.

Edit: Stanford marshmallow experiment - Wikipedia

Do we really think Koroma gets much PT when Tarris is back?
PT might depend a lot on whether he can defend against PF's or even wings if he has the ability at this level. Also, Tarris has a bad habit of getting in foul trouble and opponents will go after that. Dan Hurley has prioritized defense and I think this kid can help us with that. We shall see.

UConn will be fine but expectations need to be reset. This is nowhere near a championship caliber team like we saw a couple years ago. Which is fine, winning three in four is insanely hard to do.

Mullins and Reed are expected to be very good defenders as well. Millender is more an emergency sub if things go wrong. I don't think Hurley needs to watch the New Haven coach to figure things out, Hurley has actually done fairly well with this whole college coaching thing.

Finishing at the rim has been an issue for awhile now.

AK was solid - but we don't want him to be our best player, because I would never count on him to be a 19/10 guy against great competition. He and Solo played 33 minutes. Fine for now, not ideal longer term. It's really impossible to evaluate this team without Mullins/Reed.

Reibe was fairly exposed yesterday - 1 rebound in 18 minutes as a 5 is Samson-esque and can't happen. This is against a small 5 who gashed him on the other end of the floor. Pasha may have been the best player on the floor yesterday.
Agree. We have a deeper team and they need more rest if they are expected to carry both a scoring and defensive load. Reibe will hear about this for sure but it will be up to him to decide if he can take a beating as well as finesse people on offense.

.-.
He had another nice defensive game. Got beat on a couple drives where he was able to recover with his length and still either contest or block the shot. Has been nice to see. Offensively, well, he is who he is. I think the deficiencies are highlighted in a game like today where we didn’t have Reed, Mullins, and Demary was in foul trouble. Ross will be at his best when he’s our fifth option on offense, but having him and two of Reibe/Koroma/Smith/Millender puts more offensive pressure on him than is ideal.
Demary in foul trouble concerns me. Is that why he got blown by so many times?

Alex Karaban would start on every other team in Div 1. I think not having to be seen as the one to lead the team this season will help him have a great season.

If this is true why was he the only UConn player who had to sit there at the postgame presser last night, having to shoulder the responsibility of “being a better leader”? Maybe next time we can have some of our junior “Fab 5” guys there too. They are the ones we committed to and brought back. It’s year 3. Make them sit there with Alex after a rough performance. Why does Karaban always gotta be the one beating himself up for needing to be more “vocal”? He’s plenty vocal. And not the problem.

He has, but I do think this year is a good test to confirm whether his template was a product of a swath of talent that struck lightning(I know Temery thinks so), or repeatable. He has a very good, but not spectacular roster this year. There are still a lot of parts from a team that was disappointing last year. Now it's going to be about how quickly he can coach up a Demary to run PG and how fast can we get Mullins involved. Demary doesn't look like a natural PG to me right now - he's super intentional in how he passes the ball in at times, versus looking instinctive. Almost like he's aiming, trying too hard. And this whole not shooting thing to facilitate makes it seem even more like he has to think about it versus it just coming to him.

I kept waiting for that 15-0 run that never came. An aspect we missed a lot last year that the B2B champs had. Was hoping to see it return this year.
I forget where exactly I heard this, but I heard someone say you can separate the elite teams from the simply good teams because elite teams go on 10-0 runs (or greater) often, and rarely if ever give up a 10-0 run themselves. My gut always agreed with that statement, and if you think about our '23 and '24 teams that statement definitely holds weight. We consistently buried teams with 10-0 runs, even really good ones, and we rarely (if ever) gave up a 10-0 run to our opponent. The only examples of the latter I can think of probably came during our 6-8 stretch in January of '23, or maybe the road game against Creighton where they came out hot.

I may be off here, but I don't think we had one 10-0 run last night. I know we had at least one 9-0 run, but don't think we ever hit 10 points in a row without UNH scoring. I know we were without 2 starters but it did make me pause a bit. Why weren't we able to dominate this team? A lack of effort after playing much higher quality opponents in our exhibitions? A lack of a "killer mentality" in this squad? I honestly don't know, but I wasn't overly happy with what I saw last night.

I do think we will look substantially more dominant once Tarris is healthy. Hopefully he's back soon, I know soft tissue injuries can be a nuisance.

Was unable to watch the game so I followed the chat. Watched the replay. We missed a lot of bunnies and the 3 pt shooting is still off. Mullins will help that. The defense will tighten up along with rebounding. UNH was decent. Stewart looked good. Alec and Koroma will get minutes. Reibe will get better with time. Two starters are out. That’s all I got.
