New Haven Post Game Thread

Sports are about match ups and game plans, no one gives a flip about a spread, and if you do please go get some help.
It’s a simply analogy to how the teams looked. It’s not hard to comprehend.

Millions of people care about spreads. If you haven’t recognized that yet, go get some help.

I didn't see the game, but THIS was the type of box score I was hoping to see this am:

We won by over 40 back then and Hurley played 14 players to see who had what. We had swagger.

When I saw 9 guys in the box score this am I knew we weren't killers last night. Spencer and Newton were killers. Castle was a killer, so was Jackson and Clingan.

I was hoping to wake up to see Elezaj, Jacob Ross and Paunovic in the box score ...and with points.

I’m here. Lol

Not many crazy thoughts. Ross regressed aggression wise but it wasn’t as bad as before. He looked more comfortable tonight than even pre MSU. Defense was great per usual outside of that one drive where the offensive player made a really good move. He had probably 10-15 good defensive possessions (not sure what the actual number is, could be hyperbole) and that was the one people want to focus on where he was t even out of position. Just a good move lol
He had another nice defensive game. Got beat on a couple drives where he was able to recover with his length and still either contest or block the shot. Has been nice to see. Offensively, well, he is who he is. I think the deficiencies are highlighted in a game like today where we didn’t have Reed, Mullins, and Demary was in foul trouble. Ross will be at his best when he’s our fifth option on offense, but having him and two of Reibe/Koroma/Smith/Millender puts more offensive pressure on him than is ideal.

You realize we are down 3 players, 2 of which are starters. Geez...

But but but we were missing 40% of our starters and Furphy!

Stop...anyone who puts on a UConn uniform and expects real playing time should absolutely be able to school players from the likes of UNH. THIS was your opportunity to show Hurley you are a beast and all zero of the guys coming off the bench scored double digits.

We should not need "starters" to school a D3 team.

To compare this team to any of the national champs is a disservice to those winners.
Not saying I disagree with you but didn’t Hurley himself compare this team to the 2023 team? Maybe I’m misremembering.

How was the crowd on TV? The lower bowl on the camera side was reminiscent of the late Ollie era. Compared to the last few opening nights, there were definitely more empty seats in the building.

Well, the fouls went down to 16 from 34 against Mich St; that was the emphasis in practice.
Obviously they dialed back the defensive aggression a littlle too much--but we know they're capable of aggressive perimeter defense, unlike last year; they just have to find the balance.

11 assists on 27 baskets is not very UConn like.

On occasion we moved the ball well. We missed a number of shots that would have been assisted. But it was not up to up to Huskies standard.

I thought it was a pretty uninspired opener. Good game to get out of the way.

Their center was money. Really good player.

Defense overall was soft as a pillow top.

He made a lot of tough, well defended shots. He had a good night. I suspect he will return to earth in their next game.

I disagree with that. maybe there is a vocal hater out there but everyone loves Karaban. He was solid tonight. Chat is full of dingbat comments, that is the nature of chat.
They were some of the most prominent posters on here absolutely hating on him, so I don't know about that

I won't knee-jerk it at this point but I would really like to see more of the "euro" offense and haven't seen really any of it yet. Back cuts, easy baskets, pick and rolls, intricate offensive movement, etc. So far, the offense looks more vanilla in their sets and relying maybe more on athleticism and superior physicality.

I was surprised that a lot of these premium seats were empty. They paid a boatload of money and then don’t show up?

All I have to add is that we all but beat(couldashouldawoulda) the National Champs in the NCAA tournament last season when we shouldn't have had a chance. It was a brutal, sometimes awful season(remember Hawaii?), yet there we were with a chance to advance to the sweet 16 against the eventual Champs.

We were a 100% healthy Liam from really being great last year. You can only hope for some good luck with health. The "Professors" can't control that, but you know they will be back in the "Lab" today working on their project. Professors Hurley, Kimani, Luke and Tommy will be tinkering, experimenting, pushing, cajoling and working these kids throughout the season. You can bet they will be ready to go when it counts come February.

AK was solid - but we don't want him to be our best player, because I would never count on him to be a 19/10 guy against great competition. He and Solo played 33 minutes. Fine for now, not ideal longer term. It's really impossible to evaluate this team without Mullins/Reed.

Reibe was fairly exposed yesterday - 1 rebound in 18 minutes as a 5 is Samson-esque and can't happen. This is against a small 5 who gashed him on the other end of the floor. Pasha may have been the best player on the floor yesterday.

Nothing we saw last night won’t and can’t be fixed. No Reed and Mullins will be fixed. Literally throwing the ball away, will be fixed. Going 10-21 on layups will be fixed. I’m not worried in the slightest. We make layups and stop just giving the ball up and we win by 30+. We’ve looked better against better comp. If you’re scared get a dog.

#1 We need Silas to be more aggressive. He’s the only guy who can consistently be a triple threat with the ball. At the same time, reports of him being 6-5 or even 6-4 are exaggerated.

#2 I think we’re going to see more of Koroma than we expected. This is a good and bad thing. Good because Koroma has great energy, good d, and plays bigger than his height. Bad, because Reibe is going to need a little more time to acclimate.

#3 I liked the confidence Ross and Stew brought. They both had their moments and looked more comfortable with the ball in their hands. Getting them to be consistent factors will be pretty big for this team.

#4 We got beat off the dribble again and again to such an extent that UNH guys were letting us know. No bueno.

#5 Hard to take any real meaning from this game with two starters out. Tarris is obviously an enormous factor and Mullins might be our most talented player.

Alex Karaban would start on every other team in Div 1. I think not having to be seen as the one to lead the team this season will help him have a great season. As for the game it looked like we did not know how to play them defensively and they took it to the hoop at will. Thankfully New Haven was off at the 3 point and foul lines. Dan Hurleys short postgame interview with Wayne Norman showed he was not pleased with what went on. Reibe with one rebound is the stat that stood out. At least the rest of the team picked up the slack there. On to UMass-Lowell.

Do we really think Koroma gets much PT when Tarris is back?

I don't have those seats.. but I have two seats. I got stuck on a call til 5:45 and once I was done.. it just wasn't going to work out to make the ride up. I'd have gotten there at like 7:45. If I had those seats.. maybe I make the ride. 7PM tips at Gampel are tough for a lot of people in the state. Another half hour would make a big difference.

People may be overreacting a bit in this thread. UNH made a stupid amount of tough shots. I dunno what else Koroma or Reibe could have done on D against Pascha. Guy was hitting mid range turnaround fade aways consistently

Looking around the top 25 scores, other teams are winning these cupcake games by 30-40+ points. And scoring way more than 79 points. I think we have a lot to be concerned about.
Eh, there were some who won huge. There were some who won unimpressively.

We were definitely in the latter category and shouldn't sugarcoat it, but we weren't the only ones.
