New Haven Post Game Thread

We're two years past back to back championships where UConn didn't just win, they demoralized their opponents (when they got it going). AK was always the 4th or 5th option on those teams. That's how insanely deep they were.

IOW, we're spoiled.
Remember when Hurley SR said Andre and Adama would run through a wall for Hurley? Those guys were fearless warriors. Clingan is a mountain of a man, a dominant force and wanted to win at all costs. Newton and Spencer were fearless ballers too. That is the thing that worries me most about this game. I realize it’s just one game, but this team, including the bench players should be viewing themselves as bad**s ballers who can toy with and destroy at will a team like New Haven. I wanted to see them dominate on the boards because they are bigger and stronger and best athletes. I wanted to see them pressure the ball and force turnovers and fluster New Haven. New Haven didn’t look flustered all night. I wanted to see UConn’s elite guards blow by some division 2 players and slam dunk in their face and posterize them. I didn’t see any of that tonight.

I wanted Solo Ball the take the ball tell his inferior defender “you can stop me” and score at will on him.

I mean, you're not wrong, but it really needs to be pointed out that this New Haven team (barring injury) will probably make a lot of noise in the NEC. They were picked to finish last, and that's just the role of the D2 team making the jump. Pasha was at a CC last year. He's not a D2 guy. He plays the 4 like an early 80s NBA player with his back to the basket.

Reserving judgement until Reed plays. I like to think that he'll fix a good amount of problems on both ends of the court.
Mullins will help too - some extra floor spacing on offense, and a guy for defenses to worry about when he cuts, which will create things for others. He also might turn out to be our best perimeter defender other than Jayden. He got too handsy in the BC game, but he competed on that end and wasn’t beaten off the dribble.

A top 5 team and championship contender should be dominating and overwhelming a team like New Haven. This team need to find their inner Dawg and start acting like fearless champions and not scared kitty cats who doubt themselves when they make a mistake. They need some swagger.
Don't feel so bad: Bethsun-Cook just took Auburn to overtime

Looking around the top 25 scores, other teams are winning these cupcake games by 30-40+ points. And scoring way more than 79 points. I think we have a lot to be concerned about.
Yep, might as well just spare ourselves the pain and forfeit the season right now.

At least we have the Women's team to root for.

Tennessee and Michigan State both won by far less than UConn did. And Auburn got taken to overtime

Houston won by 18

one s it wrong to say our offense has become way too scripted? When it’s on its beautiful, but when it’s not it’s so painful to generate points.
Agree. Not at all set up like with Cam, Newton et al. That ran like a Swiss watch. I realize this is an entirely new backcourt and they will take time to adjust. Also, as many have pointed out, we were missing "Mr Inside and Mr Outside" from the starter positions. I was happy and impressed with Jaylin Stewart who seemed to be hustling and much more aggressive and confident. I also like the comments on Koroma. We have a deep and experienced team that just needs to jell and get used to each other. Thought the opponent coach has done a nice job with these guys and interested to hear that he is a protégé of John Beilein. Looks like he got a lot out of his team including very disciplined play. He had his game face on and his players were very focused on his communication which was often and pretty stern.

We will see. Maybe they really are better than what I think of them, but after Pasha got to 10 points he was clearly hot and team should have been able to prevent him from even getting the ball anywhere near the paint.

Outside of the fact Newton, Castle, Hawkins, Jackson, Spencer, & Diarra are no longer on this roster, Clingan & Sanogo would've had something to say about it, too.

Yes it's New Haven, but a good confidence builder for all the players. Jaylin showed in this game that his game is growing. He added weight and strength over the summer, and he is playing with more focus and aggression. The talent is there, the athleticism always on tap, he just needs to continue to grow and mature as a player and person to reach his potential. It is starting to show. I did not think he disappeared in the Michigan State game, everything is not stats. He mixed it up on the interior with a very physical team, getting position, hunting rebounds, playing his role on offense, and carrying his weight as a bigger wing. In the New Haven game his progression is showing; he had several good drives to the basket, his handle is good, and he put up points, rebounded on both ends of the floor, and played mostly good D. His 3 ball shooting was off tonight, but I have always thought that that was not the best part of his game. Coming out of high school he played more like he did tonight, taking it to the rack, scoring on the inside, mid-range, and being physical. UConn Nation has waited two years for Jaylin Stewart to 'make the jump'. Well it's here, I think we will see him playing better and better as the season progresses.

I just read the boxscore, 11pts, 8bds, 1 turnover in probably 25 minutes.

Well finishing up Arizona taking out Florida and they both look deeper than us. We better step our game up in a hurry because I’m not sure we beat either one playing the way we have. Both big and deep up front especially.
Arizona is going is nuts to butts going to drive the out of the ball on UConn. Better figure our defense fast

We’re still missing that player that can create his own shot. It looks like the same team like year and that team was a borderline top 25 and 8 seed. I know we’re missing 2 starters but we’ve looked unimpressive 3 games in. Kinda concerning.

"It should not have been as easy as it was for their guards," Hurley continued. "But, I would let this team develop. If I was the fan base, I would not overreact to ... not a great performance by the group."

Fair enough, in Hurley I trust. He saw the same meh performance as we did but knows this team has a greater ceiling. I will choose to believe him.

It’s the first game. No one but maybe Syracuse makes a T-shirt that says I won my opener over a cupcake by 40pt.

I’m not concerned. Their center made some hard contested shots over and over. If he plays like that all year he’ll be a millionaire next year.

What was abundantly clear to me was Demary is Newton 2.0 without a doubt. Give him a few more games to feel comfortable being the boss and he will take games over. He’s going to be getting to his spots at will by the end of the season. He’s still a little timid and being too nice. Once he lets the dogs out he’s going to be a problem.
