New Haven Post Game Thread

Well finishing up Arizona taking out Florida and they both look deeper than us. We better step our game up in a hurry because I’m not sure we beat either one playing the way we have. Both big and deep up front especially.
100% agreed. Those teams looked far more cohesive and athletic. I dropped the last 3 minutes of that awful game to cleanse my eyes with some good hoops.

Ross great first half on D and then was getting manhandled on drives in the 2nd half.
To be fair, the one that he got manhandled the most was where the NH guy cleared him out with a blatant elbow clearout that went uncalled.

Karaban seemed to quietly go for 19 and 11. Stewart was solid with 11 and 8. Nobody jumped out as having a particularly great game though. Our guards/wings were almost completely unable to stop one-on-one dribble drives and there was little effective help defense. Someone commented that Ross was a dog on defense; I didn't see that. He did stop his guy a couple times but also got taken at least a few times. He was no "stopper". Reed's presence in the middle should help a fair bit. Koroma was a very good last minute pickup as emergency center. As some have mentioned, he looked better out there than Reibe.

A top 5 team and championship contender should be dominating and overwhelming a team like New Haven. This team need to find their inner Dawg and start acting like fearless champions and not scared kitty cats who doubt themselves when they make a mistake. They need some swagger.

Yeah we would get spanked if we played like tonight.

With a couple minutes left Burries was 1-6 from 3 and Peat 11-18 from the floor with 0 3 point attempts

The offense uses up entirely too much clock to have guys consistently brick wide open 3s and shoot at the rim like a WNBA team, that is why you have a 15 point lead instead of a 30-35 point lead vs a low-major, and will play tight games vs high level high major teams. Reed will certainly help finishing at the rim and hopefully Mullins can hit open 3s, but alot of the issues we saw tonight were more of the same of what we saw last year.
Is it wrong to say our offense has become way too scripted? When it’s on its beautiful, but when it’s not it’s so painful to generate points.

Can we wait till we get our stud center back before worrying that much? Neither team is playing a lick of defense btw.
They both played hard, I watched the entire game. There were rough spots but it didn’t look like an early season game.

In regards to Demary, he looked like he was able to get to any spot he wanted to offensively, thought he could have been more aggressive/selfish when he was getting in the lane but he was looking for the open man and getting others involved.

Koa Peat on Arizona is a monster. Reed will have his hands full with him, and Haugh and Lee are good players on Florida, they stood out to me. We will need everyone at their best to beat these teams.

Think too many of our guys were focused on not fouling. Got in their own heads. No one was injured. I’m happy

I thought for the most part besides the failed alley oops the process looked good, guys have got to knock down wide open 3s at a better clip and make their bunnies.

I kept waiting for that 15-0 run that never came. An aspect we missed a lot last year that the B2B champs had. Was hoping to see it return this year.
I said the same thing in the chat. We seem allergic to momentum, even against New Haven.

Even so, not many assists in this game. We have to finish better. Hoping for growth in both defense and scoring streaks. That was a hallmark of our national championship teams. We did beat better teams during the exhibition portion of this season so to have this odd game at home is puzzling.

Sure, and Mullins. We just look sloppy and incohesive. The brand of basketball through 3 games so far has been an eye sore. I wouldn't feel great for the unit we flashed tonight to win even 1 of our big 6 OOC games. It's clear as day Mullins is a key to any chance of a run this year.

We had one good passing sequence when Karaban got the ball inside the lane then dumped it to Reibe. That was it. Not a fun watch

New Haven looks pretty good. I think they'll have a respectable 1st season in D1. We were missing a dominant big in the middle (thankfully we have one on the bench and he's coming back soon). Usually that is the big difference between P5 teams and the lower tier D1 schools. Eric Reibe didn't look great but I think he'll shine more in the backup role once Reed comes back.

I am definitely more interested in watching the UMass and Columbia games now.
