New Haven Post Game Thread

UNH never had a chance, but they did a good job not getting completely destroyed up until the end. We had a (relatively) rough first 28 minutes, missed a lot of open shots in the paint and from the perimeter. But telling myself it'll all be good when Braylon/Tarris are back

I can't wait for the day Hurley tells Silas to go get buckets. He's playing a super facilitator role, similar to Newton when he first got here. But we know the scoring is there and waiting to come out

Really solid game from Stewart. Well rounded in the first half and came out with a mission to score to start the second

Ross was a DOG on defense. Wish we saw more offensively, although he did have a 3 taken away because of a Reibe offensive foul

Malachi can get to the rim at will, just needs to slow down and stay in control. He hit a late floater instead of forcing it to the rim and then hit a 3 right after when the defense went under the screen. Good to see the adjustments, better late than never!

Maybe an unpopular take tonight but I'm excited for Reibe. I don't care that he got scored on a lot, he was playing good defense and gets in good positions offensively. He needs to make quicker decisions with the ball and needs to be stronger on the boards, but he'll be really good when he figures those two things out

Solo and Karaban had a combined 8 points on 2-9 shooting before their threes late in the first half. Solo came alive and exploded early in the second half while Karaban was quiet until 6-7 minutes to go. They both ended with a lot of points (AK 19 and Solo 18) but definitely not the offensive dominance I thought we'd get

But at the end of the day, THE HUSKIES ARE BACK BABY! Let's go UConn!

Well.......I'm glad they have 2 more games against cupcakes before playing BYU.

I figured it would take some time to gel with so many new pieces. Demary looks confused what he's supposed to do as the PG.

What was with the defense? Looked like they couldn't really stay in front of people.

There's work to do.

Perimeter defense iffy. Solo same passer and same 80% speed cutter. We remain a team that weirdly struggles at close range. Those lead my concerns.

Positive Smith looks like he has penetration skills, Silas looks like he's got a bit of a bag, and...well...I guess that's it. Will reserve judgement until we have 5 or 6 games under our belt with Reed.

Wish Smith had finishing skillz to match his penetration skills.

Reibe has gotta rebound.
He played smaller than he is tonight, but he gets to benefit from the film more than anyone. Also missed a dunk on a pass from AK because he wasn't ready. I think he's got good feet to show a lot of growth thia year.

Basically the same as last year. Missed open threes, multiple bunny layups. Bad defense and out of sync on offense.

Let's hope Reed and Mullins make a big difference.

Karaban DID look very good and he didnt see to force as much as last season.
We do have more penetrators on offense with Demary, Smith, Stewart and Ball. Though Ball was near the basket.

Demary really impressed me seeing him for the first time other than highlights. Ran the offense with efficiency and is a lot quicker than I envisioned him to be. Blew past defenders with ease.

The out of bounds baseline play for Solo’s made corner 3 with a minute left in the half was run a handful of times last year with the same result. Keep running it all year.

This season is gonna boil down to Tarris staying healthy it seems. Neither big was good against a very small team playing their first D1 game ever. Guessing that’s why we’re practicing insane levels of caution by not playing him today.

On the bright side, this is probably a 40+ point win with Reed and Mullins healthy. Gotta remember we’re down two starters.

The offense uses up entirely too much clock to have guys consistently brick wide open 3s and shoot at the rim like a WNBA team, that is why you have a 15 point lead instead of a 30-35 point lead vs a low-major, and will play tight games vs high level high major teams. Reed will certainly help finishing at the rim and hopefully Mullins can hit open 3s, but alot of the issues we saw tonight were more of the same of what we saw last year.

Wish Smith had finishing skillz to match his penetration skills.
No doubt, we'll see if he actually has strength at the rim as they settle in. No one finished tonight unfortunately. I do like him as a depth piece...I would already take him over Aidan, for instance.

Really Liked what JStew and JRoss gave us over the whole game.

Reibe looked good in first few minutes then got sloppy.

Really would have expected better perimeter D from Demary and Smith based on what they showed in the first 2 exhibitions.

Karaban is never going to be a reliable drive/finish guy for us. We just need to accept it and I hope the coaches do the same and don’t force it. It will be a detriment to our overall offense in the way it was last year too.

Getting Koroma was a steal for us.

I’m going to cross my fingers that Reed comes back soon and stays healthy. Same for Mullins. I think they mitigate a lot of the fretting that’s going on with the BY faithful.

Glad we won but there’s a LOT of work to do, hope that Reed fixes a lot of that vs Lowell
Reed would of dominated inside against this small New Haven team. He definitely wouldnt of gotten pushed around and would allow us to get some easy baskets inside which we need on offense.

Hurry back Reed & Mullins, is all I can say. That was another one that was hard to watch. This season feels like it's going to be a deeper work in progress as opposed to having any early advantages due to continuity like we anticipated. After watching Arizona and Florida just now, I'm much less confident in our early season outcomes. Peat & Bradley may run through us. 3-3 is the goal.
