Singare's stats for 90 seconds or so PT: 2 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk.
I don’t know why he isn’t getting more time in these games. Trust Hurley and staff, obviously, but what is he not doing that he needs to do, in order to see some PT? He’s got size and athleticism, and if you saw the open practice he did some impressive things.

Every single game that he comes in since last year i watch him closely and what i see is he always grabs a couple of rebounds through great positioning. I really like his future and im hoping Hurley starts giving him more minutes sooner to start getting a better gauge on his progress in real game situations. He looked great tonight in his 90seconds.

I have to say I was a bit worried about our defense coming into this season. We actually have 3-4 elite defenders in Diarra, Ross, McNeeley and Karaban. Karaban is so much better defensively than he was when he got here. Is he leading the nation in blocks after 2 games? If not he’s close. I thought Diarra was going to be our best on the ball defender, but if Ross brings that intensity and defense every night he’s going to be even more trouble for teams than Diarra. Our defense at the center position is still a big question mark.

I'd add Solo in too. Not elite yet, but he'll get there

It won't matter, he can't stay on the court. He'll end up in the energizer backup role like Diarra before long. He doesn't have many more cupcake games to prove he deserves it over Reed. We all see where this is going.

No. He has proved it. Hurley loves him playing with urgency but he has to stop "mauling" people. The team look different when he plays at a high level. His athleticism and talent are NC level.

This team is going to get better and better defensively as the season goes on but those guys you mentioned are already showing high level defensive ability and once that individual defensive talent starts to really work together in the system the D could be extremely tough. Dont sleep on Reed either, he did some good things defensively tonight. No reason he shouldnt be moved to the starting 5 in the next game or two. He is progress far faster than i thought which much credit to him but yet another example of this coaching staff being on an elite level of coaching. Just incredibly lucky as fans to have this here.

Yeah - not sure why he didn't get minutes at the end of the first half when both bigs where on the bench with foul trouble instead of playing Karaban as the center.

First half gets a D second half gets an A. Still get the almost 40 pt win. I’d like to see a starting lineup of Ball / Ross / Liam / Alex / Reed. All five of these guys have really impressed. Diarra has been ok. Mahaney, Stew, and Samson in particular have disappointed. Samson has 4 rebs and 9 fouls in two games against midmajor competition.

Agreed. We also didnt look great with that lineup out there. I trust Hurley so i assume he sees enough in practice to know the kid isnt ready just yet. We`ll see. I hope he earned some minutes tonight.

Liam’s 2nd straight double double is very impressive! His defense seems better on a game by game basis.

“Flipped a switch” Ross is a joy to watch.

AK is playing at AA level now! Is it me or he is looking more athletic and stronger out there?

Not sure that Ball can be the pg as it just doesnt seem to be a natural part of his game. He just seems like more of an shooter than distributor run the offense guy. If he were able to do it at the level we would need that offense would be a problem. I mean we already are but it seems like PG could take some time to be worked out. Would love to see Nowell take the spot but he just doesnt have the experience be given the keys to run such a sophisticated offense like Hurleys.

Holy cover!

A bit off the thread title, but who other than my buddy Hudder had UConn football -6.5 and men’s bball -37 and won both, plus men’s bball -35.5 vs Sacred Heart in game 1? Every game at times seemed a very unlikely cover. Winner, winner, winner chicken dinner!

Second bad game for Aiden. One more and it’s a real worry. He’s getting outclassed by mediocre mid major guards. Garbage time points aren’t gonna cut it. I’m rooting for him to figure it out.
You know why it’s not a real worry for me? Because Nowell, if given time, can be better than anyone. Hurley has a culture here and Mahaney and Hass will get all the chances they need to be the best they can be for the team while Ahmad gets his reps in in practice and spot minutes. Hass deserves them for his service, and Mahaney is a high profile portal player that comes with unspoken promises, and chances. But if things go south Hurley has the best overall lead guard ( when all is said and done, I’m not saying this very moment) getting ready. Love that kid, and him knowing his place in the big picture is yet another reason why.

We are going to fine either way, but I bet Aidan steps up anyway.

Hurley said Ross would have started the first game if he wasn’t hurt, which means Mahaney would be coming off the bench. We don’t need a traditional pg to run the offense in a position-less offense.

Because the reality is it's far more likely Karaban or Stewart are getting those minutes in Big East play, and now is the time to find out if it's a viable option (spoiler, it is)

Just got home, ugly first half. The center competition is over. Reed is a mountain in person. Ross has size and skill, got comfortable in the second half. Maheney looks small and not strong but he has great talent and has shown it at this level so no worries on him. McNeeley had an off shooting night but is big and tough getting boards.
Love Solo and he is very tough driving and sacrificing himself.
End of game Abraham had a beautiful move, he can play. Nowell could start on many teams I think.

This was nowhere near a bad game for Mahaney, I have no idea what you were watching. He might get replaced by Ross because he looked that good, but that's not an indictment of Mahaney

Can’t believe we covered after that iffy first twenty minutes. I knew we weren’t gonna have another 2/13 from deep half, but the switch just completely flipped. Not that I bet on UConn, I’m far too superstitious to do that, but good teams win, great teams cover, and all that.

Not John Gaffney’s best game, but he’s usually one of the better refs I see for us consistently. Now 37-4 in games he refs for us since the 12-13 season, including 24-1 over the last 4+ seasons (only L was the 2022 BE semi against Nova)

I’ve said before that back when I was in school, he was always super nice and came over to chat with us students at the front of the section before games. So I tend to keep an eye out for him and smile when I see him doing a game (and especially our games, given that gaudy record lol).

Nowell is going to be nasty. We brought in a small guard to a system that is normally positionless. Shows you how highly the staff thought of him

One observation: there is not one player in constant motion inside and out like Cam in this offense...he seemed to be everywhere....without that, the offense seems to be pretty stagnant when compared to last year.
We need to stop comparing this year's team to last year. By mid-season last year's team was a machine. We're just going to get frustrated if we keep trying to compare this year to last year.

Raftery still can't say Sanogo right, you can't have him call a game with a guy named Pissis.
It makes me laugh every time he says Sunoco. Not sure he knows how to pronounce Singare right either. Was it my imagination or did he say Sing-a-ray when Singare came into the game? Or was he pronouncing it right? I always thought it's Sing-are-ay.

You are correct on both counts!

Karaban's D after the first few minutes seemed incredibly strong tonight, he's solid like a rock. McNeeley is impressing me, and I can't wait to see him against stronger competition.

I like the current rotation of starting Johnson as a high energy, offensive impact and then following it up with Reed's more conventional style but Samson has to score more than 2pts doing so. I'd care less about his fouling if Singare was getting meaningful playtime but with it looking like a 2-person rotation at C, Johnson has to do better. It does seem a little surprising we saw small ball instead of bringing Singare in still, I absolutely trust Hurley at this point but in the little we've seen of Singare he seems like a viable option for a few minutes at least?

I am going to have faith that with more games under his belt Mahaney will thrive, we saw this previously - it can take a bit for players to get on program.

On to the next one!

EDIT I fixed the McNeeley/Mahaney swap - I accidentally had them backwards!

I didn't focus in on Mahaney's defense but McNeeley played great defense.
Hurley actually called out McNeeley and Solo for not being good defensively which surprised me. I was focusing in on McNeeley on that side of the ball and I thought he was super active and was making life difficult for them. Guess I wasn't paying enough attention or didn't know what to be looking for.

They only beat UNH by 20 last year in the 7th game of the season. They beat UNH tonight by 39 in the second game of the season in what was an off game for UConn.
