I meant Mahaney, I keep getting them mixed up! Aidan's #s weren't terrible either, just not where I think we all hope/expect him to be. McNeeley is doing great already, sorry Liam :)
Mcneeley is the taller one!

Reed needs to start.
Dont understand the focus on starting. He's going to get less offensive touches as a starter. He'll get better faster the more touches he gets.

Not sure that Ball can be the pg as it just doesnt seem to be a natural part of his game. He just seems like more of an shooter than distributor run the offense guy. If he were able to do it at the level we would need that offense would be a problem. I mean we already are but it seems like PG could take some time to be worked out. Would love to see Nowell take the spot but he just doesnt have the experience be given the keys to run such a sophisticated offense like Hurleys.
Reminds me of Newton talk.. So many times our players cant do this or that.... and then they do.

Good point
Not a good point. That's why this board exists! A national championship team seems like a good measuring stick to see how good the current team is. No doubt DH and staff are thinking about the previous team all the time.

I've been a huge Husky fan since high school, but it is pretty cool now because one of the guys I work with coached for and against a few of the players when they were younger in VA. He talks about how Ball and Ross are quality kids with good heads on their shoulders. The guy he knows the best is Abraham, and he thinks he could end up being the best of them. He said the kid will run through a brick wall for Hurley and his teammates.

New Hampshire clearly had a game plan of trying to take our guards off the dribble and (at worst) draw fouls, which the referees clearly obliged.

We made adjustments and slowly stifled them.

Some observations:
1. McNeeley's rebounding is a huge surprise; he clearly has no problem mixing it up inside. Tough and mature; no wonder Hurley pounced on him when he decommitted from Indiana.
2. Reed Jr. is much better than I expected. Obviously he's been much bigger and stronger than any frontcourt player we've played so far, but the talent is apparent. Another offseason with our staff to hone his skills and conditioning (I think he could lose another 10-15 pounds) will do wonders. From his excellent free throw shooting form, I think he can develop some perimeter game.
3. Mahaney and Stewart have both started slow. With Mahaney it's understandable, being in a new system, so I expect him to ease into the flow. Stewart looks a bit out of sorts, as his fit in our offense isn't yet defined. He's not a consistent enough shooter to constantly fade to the there point line, but maybe he play in the dunker's spot along the baseline?
4. Freshman: Nowell and Abraham look like players.
5. Jayden Ross, what a surprise! Showed explosiveness which we were never told about! Kudos to him and the staff for improving his skill and confidence.
6. As others have noted, Solo needs to diversify his offense, which will lead him to better three point looks.

This season will be fun watching so many players that can contribute.

No, it's stupid to compare to a team on November 9 after 2 games to a national championship team in April

That national championship team in November couldn't measure up to the version of them you remember from April.

And in case you didn't notice, that national championship team isn't on the schedule and is unlikely to make the NCAA tournament. They can't hurt us.

Haaaa! DH just compared this team to last years's team because we played UNH LAST YEAR game 7 versus game 2.

With 16.5 mins to go UConn only up 10 and hadn’t played well. Diarra comes off bench and in the next 7 mins he blocks a shot, forces two turnovers, scores 2 buckets on drives and gets credit for 3 assists (by my count he had 4). The whole offense is now flowing and popping and it’s a blowout. I don’t understand how he is not starting and how people don’t see him as the best PG and essential part of team.

Beyond the stuff already mentioned, I noticed how few easy points the team is getting. I'm not sure if teams are keying on back cuts or have adapted to UConn offensive schemes...or this new team don't have the cuts mastered yet, or both. Just not seeing anything easy. Last year's team demoralized opponents with the precision.

It could also be the Hurley does not want to break out those plays against these overmatched teams.

Ross looks like he may become amazing. McNeeley is Karaban 2.0. Tarris is strong and getting better. No worries about Aiden. Solo is good but still not optimized. I have a feeling that Nowell might have really gotten into NH's strong point guard. He would give up some height, but he is strong on his feet.
If Maheney was the one guarding him I would say yes Nowell.

Let’s fire Hurley and put you in as coach since you know better.

You do understand that teams get better as the season goes along? That Hurley introduces more of the offense as they progress?

If you want to compare this team with last year's team -- do it at this point of the season and then discover that this team won by twice as much (and this year's team as the excuse of being less experienced).

Karaban, McNeeley, Ross, Ball looked great, so my focus was on Mahaney and Reed. The defensive effort is there--they're definitely trying hard, but it's a work in progress. I think they'll improve and hold their own. Offensively, they are getting more comfortable, and that too shows improvement.I think Danny gave Aidan 27 min so he'll get more used to a new system; it doesn't look like he really intends to run an offense with a backcourt of Ross and Ball--I think Aidan and Hass will continue to share the point. Hass is the best ball handler, and an outstanding defender, but it seems Danny wants Aidan on the floor as an additional sharpshooter. So it'll be a 9 man rotation

Great incite, love the depth of the comments, it's how we fans grow with the team.

Singare's stats for 90 seconds or so PT: 2 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk.
Memo to Dan Hurley: PUT SINGARE INTHE GAME!

Especially when we had SJ, TR, and JS all in foul trouble in the 1st half. Just on his ability to rebound alone he should get some minutes, I know it's limited minutes but what has he done wrong to not deserve some time?

As the most experienced guy at UConn, you'd expect him to be the best point guard early in the season. That doesn't mean he'll still be the best in March. It sounds like Mahaney, Ross, and Nowell are all in the mix at PG along with Diarra. Nowell may have trouble surpassing Diarra given his similar physical profile and inexperience, but Ross and Mahaney bring different looks to Diarra and will play a lot.

Observation after two games vs scrimmage level opponents…Last year we really didn’t run an offense that required a traditional point guard role and we are doing the same this year . Not sure how a lineup of solo, Ross, liam , Alex and whichever center is not in foul trouble would handle a pair of good pressing guards but it could be fun . Aiden looks overwhelmed ; offense looks better with diarra and still think he will close games that matter . The freshman seem talented but will not get minutes cause of talent ahead of them. There will be growing pain with the early December schedule but it’s going to be a fun year .

Danny knows he needs Mahaney in the long run maybe more than anyone. He will give him a very long leash to find his footing. And he will. He is far better than he is showing.
