I think you missed my point. I agree that the AAC is a 2nd rate conference, but it’s exactly the type of flier a streaming media company may take before going all in on a conference like the ACC or SEC. Think of the American as a gateway drug. All Aresco has to do is dangle that carrot that we’re exploring options with Amazon, etc. ESPN should be smart enough to know that once the floodgates open they’re in serious trouble.

You clearly aren’t well-versed in contract negotiations. I sure hope Aresco is a bit more savvy than some of our BY posters.

dont worry you can pretend whatever you like - but if you think they can bluff that amazon is an option and espn adds zeros to the checks is lol funny

you last line couldnt be further from the truth i led financial negotions for years on much larger annual deals than the aac contract - thankfully no one was dopey enough to make up competitors out of thin air

who do you think has more insight into what amazon or google or facebook is doing as far as getting into live sports? mike aresco or espn?

i bet espn isnt too scared of hulu since they are both owned by the same company lol. netflix constantly annouces they are interested in sports - maybe they will double cross their shareholders and jump in on the aac.

LOL. The Presidents know that there is innate value in being on the WWL. They struck the deal they wanted and used the window like it was meant to be used.
Whether it’s 2nd rate or not, it is about to take a couple steps up my friend.

as usual i have no idea what you are talking about. they resigned with espn because there is nowhere else to go. we’ll see what the money is - but i fail to see the logic of huge increases unless espn bids against itself

You do realize what Mike Aresco did for a living before being commissioner or the AAC, right? He was literally in charge of acquisitions and long-term content strategy at ESPN and then CBS. Based on how ESPN has been Mia-managed the past few years I actually trust that Aresco has a better handle on this than ESPN. Disney is a great company, but ABC and their other networks have been losing ground to original content on streaming services. If I know this, I guarantee you that Aresco does as well. These aren’t fictitious companies I’m pulling out of thin air. These streaming companies are going to kill cable. Disney has been WAY behind in bringing their content to a streaming service because they are so heavily tied to cable.

There are a lot of stories like this...Kodak invented the digital camera but couldn’t see that selling rolls of film wasn’t their future while every one of their competitors saw the future.

Congrats on your previous negotiating, unfortunately on this topic you’re a bit full of it and in over your head. Don’t be shocked when we see a contract of $10 M/ year per school.

I love when the same folks who say Aresco has more insight than any poster does also think ESPN has never heard of Amazon.

it shouldnt take too much thinking to realize ESPN knows more about it’s competitors than the AAC does.

this one is gonna age well.

surprised you dont think more of disney here because your opinion on the topic can be boiled down to “when you wish upon a star”.

whatever premium they get over the last deal is going to be for being on +.

although mike aresco emailing espn articles about pillpack would be pretty funny

ESPN will be careful about putting content on ESPN+. Why? They have to maintain the premium pricing of the current ESPN channels. What they want to do is put a couple of games per team on ESPN+ (as well as other non-game content) to entice fans to subscribe to both the ESPN channels and ESPN+ to increase revenues during a period of declining subscribers.

I would imagine that current games being only shown on ESPN3 will all go to ESPN+. Thus, if you are an avid fan, you will subscribe to ESPN+. For UConn, maybe a couple of football games and a handful of men's basketball games.
I think so. Maybe, as others have noted the CBSSN games as well.

I'm really curious to see where the AAC deal lands If it truly is $7M-$10M that is awesome

You’ll see soon enough...

Leagues trending up, I think ESPN realizes that too. I hate the everyone gets the same amount stuff. I’m sure the bottom half loves it but the top half of the league shouldn’t. They bring in all the money. ECU, Tulane and other bottom dwellers should not be getting the same amount of money as Cincinnati, UCF, Houston. Aresco gotta stop this and realize that the “national champions” UCF is getting the same amount to develop facilities and other things for football as ECU. And for basketball why is 0-13 Tulane which I don’t belive has aired on a network other that CBSSN all season get the same amount at UConn, Houston, Cincinnati, UCF who’ve been on ESPN and ESPN2 multiple times this year.
We got a Big 10 invite but turned it down as they would only give us 1.5 mil a year due to all the money coming from OSU and Michigan football.

I actually think we'd take that deal as least on a transition basis.

Because it's a LEAGUE. If the league builds and the bottom dwellers rise all win. Of course, that presupposes all members are working to make their programs better and not just feasting on the $2M contract.

If it's under 10 mill I'm hoping UConn gets to keep 3rd rights like some Big 12 schools and maybe negotiate with SNY for a package of men & women bball, football, hockey, baseball and women's field hockey LOL which has won 3 of the last national championships plus the men's & womens soccer.

Just gonna leave this quote from Aresco here:

“We need to get paid for what we’ve done,” Aresco said. “It’s going to be an interesting negotiation. A lot of different platforms are interested in our product. We love ESPN, so we hope we can get something done.”

lol so that means amazon? certainly everything someone says in the media during a negotiation is true.

im sure places like stadium, dazn and other stuff is interested. i like how you think that quote is some kind of mic drop.

like the guy from memphis saying they are happy. whats he going to do come on the air and say his league made a bad deal

Bryce Harper free agency rumors: Scott Boras says there's already a done deal in place

Nowhere did I say he was negotiating with Amazon, but he has most certainly been putting feelers out there. Aresco is no dummy. You don’t think he can convince ESPN that the American is worth 1/4 of what the SEC is or 1/2 of what the ACC is? ESPN knows they severely underpaid this conference and now they’re going to have to pay significantly more. The ACC schools are making 25-30 per year and are complaining because ESPN is under paying them. The market is going up and the AAC is rising. I will guarantee you if Aresco negotiated a deal within the negotiation window that it is at least $10 M/year per school.

thats not how any of this works. the american is worth whatever someone will pay for it. what they pay the sec has nothing to do with what they the aac.

i know aresco keeps saying things like we are x good so we get y money - but he knows that isnt how it works

you get what someone is willing to pay and the only mechanism for that number to rise is additional bidders

its not ucf beat auburn give us money - it’s nbc offered us 70 million - what’s your offer?

im sure aresco had conversations with ‘platforms’ - but they aren’t your fantasy players like amazon - they are small time players nowhere near critical mass like flosports.

im sure they talked to stadium and how they stream direct and through facebook watch

they are going to get some money for moving stuff to espn+ - thats been obvious now for years

I understand how negotiating works, but thanks for the explanation. I’m glad you’re on the opposite side of this argument and think Aresco is a fool because you’re usually wrong.

lol sure i am. why dont you go take a stroll through the conf realignment board and the tv discussions there and let me know who is usually wrong and who is usually right

i explained it to you because you dont seem to have a single clue as to what you are talking about. mike aresco is going to bluff espn to huge contract. good one

Predictions: The deals of 2019

Even though AAC schools will not sign a grant of rights, the conference works out a renewal with ESPN. Expect rights fee to settle in the $8 million per school range — up from its current $2 million per school, but below the $10 million per school that the AAC wants. All eyes will be on Central Florida and Cincinnati, which will be open to bolting for a bigger conference. But neither school will leave the AAC because the Big 12 is not going to expand — at least not this year.

I thought this was interesting as well:
The ACC Network launch will be considered a modified success.

The ACC Network’s launch will look more like that of the Big Ten Network — which endured a couple of years of brutal carriage fights — than the launch of the SEC Network — which nearly had full distribution from the start. ESPN already has a negotiating blueprint thanks to its Altice deal. Plus, you won’t find a better distribution executive than Justin Connolly, who was behind the SEC Network’s launch. It won’t be an unqualified success, but it will be good enough to keep schools happy.

If true this is potentially good news for UConn since Fairfield County in Connecticut falls within the the NYC DMA and would be useful in getting the network first tier pricing. This was the engine that made Rutgers attractive to the B1G.

that this article has been posted a hundred times is funny.

sure it says $8mm a team.

it also completely dismisses uconn as a program that could leave the aac.

How so?
Millennials are the biggest cord cutting group. And since we’re not a P5 team, I’ll never pay to watch one. I don’t think I’m alone in that.

Rule number 1 and we are doomed, so I voted for about what we are getting now.

I think that you putting more than a few syllables in their mouth....the fact that they mentioned that eyes would be on UCF and Cincinnati for bolting...isn't exactly "completely dismissing" UConn (nor Houston, Memphis, et al).

It also says that is not happening this year because the Big 12 isn't expanding.
