ND vs Duke (last Mon.)

After watching this game and the South Carolina game yesterday, I noticed that these games go 2+ hours and ours finish in about 1:45. Seems like this 4th quarter has been going for 20 minutes.

Well, nobody fouls at the end of blowouts.

Duke was up by 5 with 6:00 to go, but ND closed on an 18-6 run.

Notre Dame 68 Duke 61. Duke is still searching for a signature win that's needed to get in the tournament. Nice win by your team orangutan

Thanks, Duke were excellent opponents tonight. They punched ND in the mouth, but I expected that on a Big Monday.

I really thought ND was in trouble but they finally got some stops and made their surge. If Duke brings that energy every game, they should basically never lose at home.

Glad ND survived that. Now they need to sharpen up significantly before playing Louisville because they will be hungry and flying around as well.

Love watching ND's Ogunbowale. She has great ball handling skills..

Seems everyone in Duke can rebound ....
WHY ARE WE SO OBSESSED WITH ND???

a 4 page thread with over 115 comments regarding ND vs. an unranked team? Good grief! ;)
Because lots people want to see if Duke can beat ND. And, ya, almost.....almost

I actually think it's because this is the one place people can be fans of and talk about any team. Go anywhere else and it's horribly bias towards that boards team. People on this forum seem to love all wcbb.
I was being sarcastic, or tongue-in-cheek. People sometimes complain when we have super long Tennessee threads and I wanted to point out that ND is a compelling rival that will earn lots of comments just like South Carolina and a few other teams. Even tho Tenn is not a "rival" any longer, they will still get discussed too...!

Interesting game - my impression was Duke was playing free and loose and fast through about 13 minutes of the second half and outscored ND by 15. Then with that five point lead, it seemed they went into a stalling, very deliberate offense for the next five minutes and lost the game. This reminds me of what Geno said about men's coaches trying to manage every minute of a game and killing the sport - not sure it was actually JPM, but they seemed to look to her for direction while bouncing the ball just over half court on each of those slow and futile offensive sets.

I don't know. I know some people on The Boneyard don't like the phrase "The eye test", butI've been watching ND games throughout the year and I don't see where this team has improved since they've played UCONN. To me they seem virtually at the same level. Whereas UCONN has visibly improved with the continued maturation of KLS, Butler, Gabby and Chong. Maybe my eyes are deceiving me.

Well we're in conference play now, and there is a bit of a difference between playing Duke and playing Tulsa. Duke may not be coached very well, but they do have talent on the team that can at least put up a fight. The ACC may not be a league full of spectacular teams, but again teams that aren't great still have enough talent recruited based on name brand alone that can make for a tough(er) night every now and again. Outside of USF, who in our conference can remotely challenge us? Of course we look much better when we're blowing teams out by 50 and 60 week in week out.

If I were Muffet McGraw I'd be concerned about their offensive execution these days. ND doesn't look remotely like the team from early in the year...lots of standing around, no real post offense at all other than the occasional offensive rebound, and some really poor shooting from the perimeter. Early in the year there was tremendous movement, great spacing that opened driving lanes, outstanding shot selection. Somehow they seem to be worse offensively with Turner in the lineup.

I think he point being we beat the #3 ACC team by 24, the #6 Big12 team by 40, the #1 Big10 team by 44, and the #5 team by 44. That 3/4s of the teams in any P5 conference would end up putting up a good showing against Uconn is unlikely.
SC will be an interesting game - they are strong at home, and the place will be rocking, and if they play well it will be a good game. If Uconn starts well and they do not, it could easily end up like the OSU game did or like last years game.

ND was shooting above 45% from three as a team - that just doesn't happen for a year, so a cool spell was inevitable (you have to go back ten years to find a team that ended the year at 44%, and in the last six years no one has ended at 42%.) Dukes length and quickness inside, when they did't have to be that worried about the three made ND look a little off - especially since they don't seem to shoot many mid-range shots. And ND hitting 46% from three looks like a better offensive team than they are.

Defense is where they've improved significantly. Also, Ogunbowale has improved significantly.

ND has played some decent defenses lately and regressed to the mean a little in terms of 3 point shooting, so the decreased offensive production has offset the improved defense and the overall impression is similar.

In the UCONN vs ND game Turner out & ND Guards went 3 crazy! With Turner back in future UCONN matchups a 3 point Guard sits more, UCONN wins by bigger margin! I've said for the last 3 years the best way to beat ND is with your bigs!
Even when Achonwa was there, she was the ONLY good big for ND! Now with Turner she's the only good big! ND cannot handle Stewie, Tuck (if healthy), Collier, Gabby, KLS, & Butler! Turner can only guard 1 of those 6, other ND bigs cannot cover or score vs UCONN bigs!
Tonight DUKE came back in 2nd 1/2 when their bigs became dominate! They have 4 or 5 bigs 6'2" or bigger, they could/should have killed ND inside! Then JPM became brain-dead and guards forced the issue and they had miss after miss after miss layups and charging fouls and the DUKE lead evaporated!
Tonight was perfect example of why JPM sucks as a HC!
Tuck is the key big-time to the rest of UCONN season! She is the missing link that forces opponents into unfavorable mismatches with Stewie, and the gang of 6! If Tuck is out for any length of time or plays at 1/2 speed UCONN becomes a less awesome team! More easy to match-up with! Collier, KLS, Gabby, & Butler have to be really on the top of their games!
Possible but a lot to ask of young players!
