NCAA Tournament, Rd 3 - Thursday

Everyone killing Calipari for losing to a title favorite in Arizona. Could he coach when he embarrassed Pitino last year?
I think it's impressive he got Arkansas to a Sweet 16.

I think how they looked in losing is a factor. Arkansas looked like they were playing a pick up game.

I find TKR (and Purdue for that matter) very annoying but that shot of him looking up at the clock without smiling after that tip in was pretty cold blooded

Did you watch that video breakdown that was posted? He’s always been a mediocre coach at best. Sometimes all the talent he collects outperforms his lousy coaching abilities, and they win some big games. More often than that, they grossly under achieve.

UK fans beef - he is more interested in helping kids get to the NBA than winning. All said, it’s always exciting annually because he pulls in a top class of OADs that always have potential, and fills the lottery with alumni.

Utah St looked a million times more prepared vs Arizona than Ark did with nowhere near the same budget/talent. Arizona is obviously a great team but Ark looked like they just went out there and hooped with zero gameplanning.

If you gave Calhoun Cal's roster, he'd be in Final 4's. Did Cal really think he was going to be able to go up and down the court with AZ? 109 points? He just rolls the ball out there and say's "go get em".

.-.
Cal has had an extremely successful career, that should be much more successful given the rosters he’s had

He’s an excellent recruiter, rides the recruits to wins, loses in the tournament because he can’t match up on the Xs and Os, sends the recruits off to the league, and starts over

Not that he was winning a bunch of rings with that strategy before, but that especially doesn’t work in the era of 23 year old 5th years sticking around for NIL

So yeah, no shame in winning the SEC and making it to the S16 before losing to a 1 seed. That’s a hell of a season. But all the issues as a coach that got him bounced from Kentucky are still there. This is probably going to be the peak (or near the peak) of his Arkansas career

Cal's issue is this technique is all he does. He doesn't have much of a roster strategy other than 5 star freshmen. In his presser, all he sited for next year and getting stronger were his incoming freshmen, didn't even mention the portal. It's fun, no doubt, but it has a limited ceiling.

I doubt he's hit his peak though - Arkansas has $$. He'll continue pulling in great young rosters and winning, but not getting near a title unless the next Flagg or Boozer decides to go to Ark.

This may be covered elsewhere in here but I find it utterly perplexing that so many are now back on the Purdue train again. Clark Kellogg (who I generally respect) picking them to go to the FF and the Athletic giving them a 14% chance to win it all (for context we’re 4% and Duke is 16%). They should have gone to overtime vs Texas and the only way I can see them beating the Cats- let alone avoiding a blood bath- is if they flop their entire starting line-up into foul trouble in the first 10 minutes.

I'm sure you've heard the saying "the whole is greater than the sum if the parts". That's not Arkansas. With them you get 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.5.

I'm convinced that at practice Calipari rolls the ball out and says "OK guys, work up a sweat".
After their NBA finances. & etiquette course.

Honestly could not believe he evens run this kind of stuff.

I mean if he doesn’t bring in Davis for that one year run at KY and Rose for that one year run at Memphis. He’s a glorified recruiter

TKR held Swain down with his left arm and tipped it in with his right. Even used him as leverage to jump over him. Got away with one.

Yeah. TKR is always straddling the plays hard / plays dirty line and I'm not a fan. More than once a game he dives in to the deep end of dirty. But, if refs and officials let him get away with it, he'll keep doing it.

It's taken him landing generational players to win it all. It's the only way he can do it going forward. Scheyer is kinda following suit, but it seems he's learning how to coach as he evolves.

This upcoming season will change shape some as it's not loaded with high end freshmen - so Cal & Scheyer may need to get more active in the portal. Scheyer did nothing in the portal this last go around.

He also often uses his off arm to keep the defender away when he makes his awkward layups and always gets away it.

No this isn’t gonna happen is it Nate? You already played a few with an ineligible player now add a felon to the list?
