NCAA NET Rankings

Even in the NET Rankings UConn has played a tougher schedule than LSU has. UConn has played only 3 teams ranked out of the Top 50. They are Dayton at #209, Ball State at #98 and Butler at #130. They have played 8 teams in the 50. They are NC St #9, Maryland #39, Minn #37, UCLA #6, Kansas #43, Texas #3, North Carolina #46 and Louisville #26.

While LSU has played only 2 teams ranked in the Top 50. They are Colorado #24 and Virginia Tech #18. They have played 11 teams ranked out of the Top 50. They are Queens U #347, MS Valley St #335, Kent St #122, S. East LA #148, TX Southern #346, Niagara #288, UVA #73, Louisiana #225, McNeese St #359, Northwestern St #268 and Coppin St #285.

There should be major penalties for teams that play out of conference schedules as bad as this. Yes LSU plays in the SEC, but currently there are only 6 teams in the SEC that are rated in the Top 50, that's including LSU. While currently there are 4 in the Big East including UConn. LSU will play South Carolina #1, Miss St #35 and Florida #49 only once, while playing TX A&M #20 and Alabama #29 twice. UConn will play Creighton #19, Marquette #32 and Seton Hall #34 two times and that is not counting the Big East Tournament.

You need to find some targets other than Kim. Look at Texas ‘ schedule. Two quad ones NO QUAD TWOs!

Texas schedule is bad, but not as bad as LSU's. Texas only has one team rated at 300+ while LSU has four and that is UT Rio Grande at #310. Three of the their games were in Saint Thomas Paradise Jam which they have little control in the schedule.

Texas has played two Top 50, zero 51-100, four 101-150, three 151-200, one 201-250, one 251-300 and one 301-350. The following games were at home, Southern #184, Liberty #145, UT Arlington #229, LA Tech #190, Oral Roberts #158, UConn #12 and Long Beach St. The following games were at a neutral site at the Paradise Jam, AZ St #135, High Point #295 and USF #111. Both Arizona #41 and UT Rio Grande #310 were away games.

Texas has an SoS of 39 according to Massey while LSU's is 97, almost 3 times better than LSU's. I can understand that both teams play in a better conference than UConn in the Big East, but scheduling so many cup cakes by both teams is ridicules. Both Texas and LSU have one more non conference game before they start conference. Texas plays Jackson St #109 and LSU plays Jacksonville #273, after those two games have been played there is a chance that LSU's SoS will be North of 100 while Texas will be South of 50.

You just have to luv the AP raters. We are ranked 17, I'm sure due to 3 L's. Our 3 losses are to teams that are ranked 2, 3, and 5 and all 3 of them are undefeated. Maybe the AP needs a new panel of raters, some of whom actually look at more than a team's W/L record.

Major penalties as in perhaps no better than a five seed in the ncaa tournament thus foregoing hosting the first two rounds? Many of us can hope (and if it did occur it might change Coach Mulkey’s scheduling approach) but I don’t expect it will ever happen.

Some coaches take a different tack and schedule challenging opponents in non-conference to help prepare their teams for March. Coach Mulkey’s approach has worked out well for her so she’ll continue it until she finds motivation to change. I personally find attending games resulting in 40-50 pt wins against overmatched opponents tedious.

Among teams in the NET top 50, those with the 10 highest nonconference strength of schedule rankings are as follows:

Team (NET ranking): Nonconference strength of schedule ranking
UConn (12): #2
Gonzaga (14): #15
South Carolina (1): #16
Kansas (43): #17
Duke (28): #21
Maryland (39): #23
Iowa (7): #32
Creighton (19): #33
North Carolina (46): #36
Arizona (41): #42

On the other end of the spectrum, no fewer than 11 out of the NET top 50 have a nonconference strength of schedule ranking outside the top 200:

Team (NET ranking): Nonconference strength of schedule ranking
West Virginia (31): #324
TCU (22): #307
Marquette (32): #305
Oregon State (27): #300
Washington (30): #290
Minnesota (37): #256
Mississippi State (35): #243
Texas A&M (20): #232
LSU (15): #214
MTSU (50): #207
Texas (4): #204

A strength of schedule of 324??? Is that even possible for what should be a big time school? What did West Virginia do, play the Little sisters of the poor 3 or 4 times?

Query: is this based on teams played at the present time? Does it include projected strength of future games such as UConn vs. SCar and Notre Dame?

I don’t know why it’s so low. It could be worse

Based on games played. Not projected.

The NET strength of schedule metric appears to award greater weight to games against top teams, as opposed to calculating straight averages or combined W-L percentages.

A comparison between West Virginia and LSU is illuminating on this point. WVU's average opponent NET ranking is slightly higher than LSU's (#211 vs. #218), but LSU's top 3 opponents (#18, #24, #73) are significantly better than West Virginia's top 3 opponents (#33, #123, #139). And so LSU's NET nonconference strength of schedule ranking (#214), while bad, is not nearly as bad as WVU's (#324), even though their average opponent NET rankings are very similar.

Note that Massey uses a similarly “top-heavy” weighting system in its SOS metric: It ranks LSU's current SOS at #97, compared to West Virginia's at #215.
