NBA redrafts from the Ringer (good Ray discussion)

Thanks, just watched / listened. I love this type of thing, and I'm glad they ultimately came around to giving Ray his due. I think he gets underrated often because a) he's not much of a loud mouth, flashy type, and b) he became known as a great shooter, whereas he was always a great offensive player overall.

I like like how it was pointed out that if Ray doesn’t go to the Celtics there is no KG.

That's interesting, as the prevailing wisdom is that because he was considered a mid-range specialist his game wouldn't translate. I don't necessarily agree, but I'm biased.

He has a little bit of "I'm the smartest guy in the industry" to him but Ryen Russillo is a pretty great addition to the Ringer. His NFL recaps every Monday with Chris Long were great and I find myself looking forward to his appearances on Simmons's stuff.
 
I remember Mike Francesa saying Grant Hill was so much better than Ray Allen and that "It's not even close."

The best ability is availability. I thought all that sprite was supposed to help his game , I’m guessing Ray has never had Sprite in his life.

Better? Maybe. Significantly better? Not even close? Crazy talk, at least when looking at advanced stats.

Hill's third season outshines Allen's best by a lot. Beyond that, may a slight edge to Hill as a more versatile player and better defender.

I take it back. Ray Allens best season in Seattle was similar to Grants best in Detroit. I guess one can argue either was better. Ray still has the shot and that might make the difference in any argument. Overall, both had great long careers
 
Does anyone have many memories of Grant Hill in the NBA? Meanwhile, Ray won two rings and made one of the biggest shots of all-time.

depends if you live in Detroit, Orlando, or Phoenix
 
In 1995 or 1997 if you said Grant Hill was better than Ray Allen and it wasn't close, that would make sense.

In 2020, if you say Grant Hill was a better player at his peak, that would make sense.

In 2020, if you say Grant Hill was so much better than Ray Allen and it's not even close, that is an incredible lack of awareness. By 2005, I don't think you could logically say that anymore. By 2014, you definitely couldn't.
 
I also watched the next couple of those pods, the 2001 draft was very interesting as well. But 1996 was always my favorite draft. Excited for some more re-drafts, wonder where Kemba goes in 2011? Definitely higher than Brandon Knight, suckers!

I would guess Kwai gets drafted 1, Kyrie 2, and Kemba possibly 3rd.

I honestly didn’t think it was anywhere close to 200 games sue me.
 
Crazy to think that Shaq, penny, hill, Dwight, and tmac all played in Orlando during their primes, never won (young Shaq/penny unfortunately ran into MJ), and got traded away unsuccessfully. What an organization...

checked his basketball reference page and he played 4 games in 2000-01 season, 14 in 2001-02, 29 in 2002-03, missed the season in 2003-04, 67 games 2004-05, 2005-06 21 games, then 65 games in 06-07. Your acting like he played a bunch of games for Orlando when in fact he didn’t unfortunately.
 
Ray is greater because he was healthier and he was an all star for more years and won a ring as an all star and 1 as a role player. To be the greatest health is a factor so you do need to be lucky too.

To Hills credit he came back from those injuries to still be a very good role player. He still made into the Hall of fame, I don’t understand why there is this debate about Ray and Hill they both got into Springfield together. If you ask me who was greater without hesitation I’m gonna say Ray and sure the durability is a huge factor.

Wow, didn't know Hill was in Orlando for seven years and six seasons. That is a lot of time one city.
