Carl Adamec: Family atmosphere at UConn won over Collier LINK

Napheesa Collier joked that the hug she got from coach Geno Auriemma Sunday would be the last she’d get in her career with the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team.

Her sense of humor will help. She did notice the hug shared between Geno and Bria:

But then Collier recalled the embrace between Auriemma and Huskies’ senior guard Bria Hartley with a minute to go in UConn’s national championship game victory over Notre Dame on April 8 in Nashville, Tenn.

“That was such a sweet moment,” Collier said. “It shows how much his players mean to him and how much he means to his players when you see that kind of reaction.”

Interesting nugget from Carl. I didn't know Collier, Boykin and KLS will be teammates at the 3x3 event.

Up next for Collier is USA Basketball’s U-18 national team trials in Colorado Springs May 24-26. She will then take part in the 3×3 U-18 national championship tournament May 30-June 1, also at the United States Olympic Training Center.

Ironically, two of the players that she met on her visit — De’Janae Boykin (6-3 forward, Springdale, Md.) and Katie Lou Samuelson (6-3 wing, Huntington Beach, Calif.) — will be her teammates in the 3×3 event.

“It was great to get to know them before the tournament,” Collier said. “I played in the 3×3 tournament last year. But I’m really looking forward to trying to make the U-18 team.”

So what kind of nickname will we give her. Nephy doesn't sound quite right, too much like nephew.
How about Collie? Pretty closely related to Husky.

Her name translation is "Precious One"!

I sort of like 'NC' it reminds me of something ... still thinking ... oh yeah ... and if she just happened to chose a uniform number like say ... 10, or maybe 11, or 12 ...
NC12 sounds like a good short hand for her doesn't it!

It seems that from the @PHEEsespieces already mentioned that her nickname is probably Phee ("Fee")

As in move your feet when you defend her, or you will have to "Pay The Fee".

She's also a boxer. How could you not like this kid?

Great get for UCONN. I kind of had a feeling that she was a UCONN type of player.

.-.
I agree she may go by Phee (Fee)-regardless, she exudes all the great Uconn characteristics!! Welcome Nepheesa-we will call you whatever you'd like:)

No inside info. Just a gut feeling on Brown. In 2015, there should be plenty of minutes for a true center. It would be logical that an ex-NBA player like her father would appreciate Ollie and be even more comfortable with the overall Uconn experience. Ollie also would have nothing but great things to say about Geno.

It just seems to be an excellent fit for someone that has big aspirations.

Did PJ and Kevin ever play together?

PS.... Don't miss the Hoop Gurlz (or whatever they call it) article on her (.you can find it under her name on the internet) . Was so pleased to read about her dad who came to the USA to escape repression, as so many of our families did over the generations of immigrants.evidently he came to participate in America as so many did over the generations of immigrants. My personal welcome not only to Collier but to her dad as well. He gives me hope for our nation .
oh la la .... happy Easter... we are on the right track....congrats...we have COLLIER now.

From the capital of Mizzou to the capital of college basketball

I get the same feeling. Can't explain it. Had it about Napheesa too. One thing that caught my attention in an article about Kalani and family, was her possible interest in nursing and I'm thinking Bingo! UConn's School of Nursing - a premiere program in the field.

"Kalani, who also enjoys writing fiction and is interested in studying English, journalism or nursing, said she is in no hurry to make a decision on college."

phee sounds good...
I just wonder if she is overtly successful and evolves into a star (which is definitely feasible), would we be hearing a lot of screams, "Pheemendous" from the crowd??? Just curious. I surely wouldn't mind it at all because anyone who helps UConn excel deserves all the accolades and raves that she receives.

"Pheenomenal" post

The original Precious was one of our all-time greats.
"Precious" (Sales): Uconn leader in steals with (477), and third in points (2178). May Phee have as successful a career at Uconn.

Once more with Pheeling.

Or three times.
She's a triple-jumper.

Another triple-jumper:

Jess Moore, Alaska state champ IIRC.
