What do they mean by arena naming for $5 million per year or $20 million in perpetuity? Are they looking to change the name of Gampel?

are all schools doing this extreme level of naming type of stuff?
Yes.
University athletic naming rights have become a crucial revenue strategy for collegiate athletic departments to fund scholarships and operations, often resulting in long-term, multi-million dollar deals. Recent trends show a surge in stadium and arena naming rights partnerships, such as the University at Buffalo's 15-year, $31.75M deal with Broadview Federal Credit Union.

Key Trends and Examples in Athletic Naming Rights:
  • Major Deals: Beyond the University at Buffalo, significant deals include Rutgers' extension with SHI International through 2029 and Kentucky's partnership with Kroger.
  • Field-Specific Rights: Instead of rebranding entire stadiums, many universities are selling naming rights for the field itself, such as Penn State's agreement for "West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium".
  • Revenue Focus: Mizzou Athletics recently engaged a partner to secure naming rights for Memorial Stadium as part of a strategy to increase competitiveness.
  • Strategic Partners: Third-party firms, such as Van Wagner and Intersect Partners, are increasingly involved in brokering these deals.
  • Considerations: Institutions prioritize partners that align with their core values, navigating the sensitive balance between commercialization and preserving traditional names, particularly with memorialized venues.

Gampel should stay in the name, it will prob be structured like XYZ Arena at Gampel Pavilion or something like that (see the Rent).

$5mil for naming rights for 5 year term. $20m for naming rights in perpetuity, but nothing is forever so there’s prob some 30 year term or something behind the scenes. Just speculation on that

And then the TV crew just calls it Gampel Pavilion.

Sometimes they name the court as well.

Yeah. Right now it’s Alumni Court. I remember there was talk about naming it after Calhoun and Auriemma at some point. There’s probably an article about that somewhere. I don’t know if they monetize the court name itself other than the ads that appear on it.

I've lobbied for renaming it Hall of Fame Court and putting the players in the Naismith, Hall of Fame along the sidelines and reserving the end lines for Calhoun and Auriemma. Dave Benedict said that he would never consider renaming the court since it would be an offense to our alumni. Apparently what he meant is, he would never consider renaming the court if someone wasn't writing him a check. Given the times, I guess that's fair enough.

The carrier dome was the forever name too .. Until it wasn't.

Syracuse had to negotiate their way out of that deal.

Good luck doing so with Mr. Gampel.

We change the name and boom, Gampel is instantly haunted by a mad ghost.

Is Perpetuity the same as Forever? For some strange reason, I just wouldn't trust them on that

LMFAO

He died over 20 years ago so you're right. 😀

Crazy that all he had to give back then was $1 million to get his name on the building. That wouldn't even buy a crappy transfer these days.
