Mullins out 6 weeks with ankle injury

Mullins gets off the floor significantly when he takes 3's. A weak ankle has to impact his whole shot mechanics. It would suck to have this cause him to lose time and then lose effectiveness for a while to boot when he returns.

Injuries piss me off. You always want teams to be playing at full strength in marquee games. With Reed, Mullins, and other guys nursing issues the early games put tournament seeding at risk. Poorer seeding hurts the ability to advance deep. Truly sucks.
This injury sucks big time.

Totally sucks. Was going to be fun to see him go up against his peer group of top frosh/lottery picks in guys like Dysbantsa/Peat/Burries/Pedersen. Now we miss that in his likely only season. I feel like any loss we have over one in the OOC could drop us a seed line. We go 3-3, probably starting our seeding potential at around a 3 unless we totally wipe the floor of the BE/StJ. These OOC games are really big for this team with the BE so meh. I'm not a believer in Stew at the 3 for many reasons. I will be curious to see how much more Silas/Smith play together in this stretch.

I think this injury greatly increased the odds he’ll come back next year.

This is a nothing sandwich, SO LONG AS BIG BEAR IS BACK. He is the one guy we can’t lose. Silas, Malachi and Solo will give us plenty of scoring. Stewart and Ross? It’s time boys. This is opportunity knocking. You don’t step up now and I will stop believing you have it in you. This is two years in a row that injuries open the door for them. Lastly, I think the Aussie will be heard from too. We are fine boys and girls.
We have no replacement for Mullins. Thats why he is predicted to be 1 and done. Tremendous shooter, quick athleticism. Unfortunately we Jayden or Jalin not close to the same ability.

This is a heavily stacked out of conference schedule that is set up perfectly outside of outside of the Kansas game. I was thinking possibly run the table, two losses at the worst. Mullins is a huge part of this and there's a major drop off without him. Depth is nice but Jaylin and Jayden aren't nearly as good as him. Now I just want to get through the gauntlet.

I want to hear that Tarris is 100% and ready to go.

Wasn't the original timeline 4 weeks for McNeeley's high ankle sprain last season? 6 weeks original prognosis sounds worse than a high ankle sprain. And FWIW McNeeley took over 5 weeks to get back into game action.
I am not certain what that timeline was but if it was 5 weeks it was wrong as it clearly took much longer to heal. If it is worse than a high ankle sprain that would start to put a lot of different could be’s on the table.

Hamstrings and high ankle sprains have a clear track record that coming back to early could be really bad. Look at Mike Evans with his hamstring issues. There are just some injuries that you can’t rush back from. And 4 or 5 weeks may have been an aggressive timeline for Liam because we were already in season with this one happening pre season (if it is a high ankle sprain) I believe 6 weeks would be a more realistic timeline.

Then you have credible sources that say it could be less time because Mullins is a quick healer. Not going to discount that after seeing what Mahomes did when he had that gruesome knee dislocation and was playing in two weeks.

But I understand your reasoning.

Silver lining. It gets Stewart and Ross time to build momentum in their game. We will survive the OOC stretch without Bray, Alec Millender can provide high quality 3%.

Be confident that we do well in the OOC schedule then the kid comes back and we are that much better.

This feels more like a Steph Castle impact (key piece but not vital) vs Liam impact (had to be vital due to lack of guards)

Demary, Malachi, Ball, and Alec can be a good group of Gs

We went through this with Calhoun when we had good teams that were always hit by something. Scott Burrell bout with mono really cost us. No way to spin this as a positive as it will set back his development this year. Hope this team isn't snake bit.

You know we have Solo Ball and Alex Karaban and Silas Demary, Jr. and Taris Reed and Danny Hurley and Jaylin Stewart and Eric Reibe and Furph(!!) and Jayden Ross and Malachi Smith and Jonathan, right?
And we got Mojo. Don't forget, we got Mojo.

Stewart, Ross and Malachi get ready
Yep.
We dont know what we have in Stew, Ross and Smith. We really don't. Many people lack imagination. Often we need to be spoon fed visual, 100% tangible proof before we back anything up. Its wrong to copy/paste Stew as a sophomore to Stew as a junior. It seems at times that the Dixon defense game is treated as an outlier. Dixon was arguably the best offensive player in the country and Stew did a number on him. Will we get it every game? No. But no one shows up every game. Ever

Article is all over the place though. Goes from saying “out nearly two months” to “source says he’s a quick healer - less than 6 weeks”

Lol. More likely, this will have a negative impact on his play all season. High ankle sprain are a devastating injury for young players to recover from. Liam was a shell of himself when he came back.

So what's the deal with Furphy?
Think he’s in the same place he was post commitment but before he torched that international tourney and people were losing their minds about finding him minutes - he’s last guy off bench and hopefully gets a little run here and there so he can be a meaningful piece long term

Like the very last guy off the bench? I agree he probably won't get much run this season but he's definitely not one of the last guys off the bench of the 15 scholarship players.

He can play, but the adjustment to speed of UConn/high major D1 is a lot. Consider him a luxury at the moment. He's one of the better 10th/11th (well 9th/10th for the moment) dudes in the country.

Putting my money on Smith starting. Silas and Ball are both 6’4 and solid it’s not a tiny lineup by any means. Mullins was easily the most expendable starter, much more concerned with Reeds injury.

WHAT!?!? Appreciate your response, I do, but WTF, "One of the best 10th or 11th dudes in the country. Trinity or Wesylan probably have a couple of dudes who could perform at that level. A look back at some of the write ups on Furphy during spring and summer told us different. In fact, take those same articles and it sounded like they were describing Mullins: same size, same shot, same skill set. So is he just a body for practice?

One of the reasons that Liam wasn't great in the NCAAs is that he lost a lot of developmental time due to injury. Freshman like Mullins need to play to get get better.

Castle missed 6 games. Mullins is looking at five weeks.
