Actually, they can't. The ACC Grant of Rights prohibits FSU or any other ACC school from leaving. FSU tried to sue their way out but couldn't. They negotiated a buyout starting in 2030, which interestingly enough is when the next Big10 contract will be negotiated. Does that mean that FSU will be joining the Big10? Nope, but it does mean that they are hopeful and would be willing to move.

Could the Big10 have tried to buy FSU out of the ACC? Sure, but it would have been so expensive that it wouldn't be worth it.

Performance of football teams is far from guaranteed. It took Miami 24 years to get back to competing for a national championship. For most of that time they have been pretty mediocre. Sometimes bad. Florida State has struggled for a few years now and it doesn’t take that long to go from national power to “ didn’t you used to be somebody?” If other programs consistently beat them for a few more years the distribution chart will look far different.

And back in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80's and even early in 1990, they had the University of Florida's support and still did not get in. They even tried again when Maryland left the ACC....they were not even one of the schools vetted by the Big Ten for expansion.

There's just no interest. It makes no financial sense for the SEC or the Big Ten or their television partners. Why is this so hard to understand?

I have a question - it seems to be widely accepted that UNC and UVA are locks for future P2 invites. I can kinda see the case for UNC, but what exactly does UVA bring to the table? I don't get the infatuation with them, can someone please explain?

The B1G's always had a thing for UVA. They want to lock down the DMV, plus they like the academics of a UVA. If they also get UNC then they basically own the eastern seaboard at least the most populous part of it.

In theory, and by the old math, UNC and UVa are flagships and expand the footprint. Would be a geography play like Maryland and Rutgers, but in this day and age, does a geography play warrant adding $100,000,000 per year for each school?

Probably not.

The things that made sense in 2011 or 2022 or 2023 no longer make much sense now.

Plus from many reports out of Carolina, UNC is looking for the SEC not the Big 10. Bubba Cunningham has said as much. I doubt Virginia is thinking that way.
