Diarra, Samson and Karaban really should be killing whoever they match against.
They looked in complete control. Hass and SJ are gonna be huge this year

Lookin great to me, but you know . . . . . . . . . .

Allen Iverson's press conference ...

Still hilarious to me people on the BY think Samson and/or Diarra is coming off the bench.
What did Samson showcase as plus last year that makes him a slam dunk at the 5?

Did he do any of these well?

Rebound
Low post defense
Free throw shoot
Low post offensive game, any offensive game other than dunk

These are fairly core skills of a top 5 center.

Against solid bigs he got pushed around a lot. His rebounding rate was abysmal. He demonstrated zero offensive game other than rim running dunks. He looks really bad at the FT line.

I love the loyalty, but kid will need to show some leap to guarantee a spot at the 5.

We went undefeated in games Samson started last year. The competition to start is also vs. a guy who was the 5th option on the worst team in the B10 and perhaps all of P6.
He also had a negative net in a ton of our blowout wins.

So we are in trouble at Center is what I'm reading. Weakest position of the lineup?

Will that combo make us forget Sanogo/Clingan or Clingan/Johnson? No, but...Think Reed is going to be pretty darn good. SJ will be better, how good, who knows??

I love it. Half court make it take it!

I think they will be more Sanogo and Whaley than what we’ve seen these past 2 years.

These last 2 years were mostly Donovan that gave an advantage to those center combos.

Don’t think Samson or Reed will be either Sanogo or Donovan. I’m hoping they can at least even be a Whaley but time will tell. It’s going to take a lot of work for us to have the interior advantage we had these past few years.

Interesting analysis by the posters here. In summation, we have the two worst centers in college basketball.

Didn’t know that before today.

lol - I just don’t like jumping to the loyalty conclusion with Samson. He wasn’t good, a lot, last year. There was no player on the team that made me yell wtf are you doing more than him, by a ton. I think there are a lot of endorphins for him based on the overall team success, some amazing highlight reel dunks and because he’s just a good dude.

The drop off from him and Clingan was steep.

Reed is a guessing game. On pure physicality, traits and hand/eye he seems to have significantly more upside than Samson. It’s hard to know exactly how bad the UM situation was inside the walls and how it impacts a raw kid like him. He was
a top 30 player in some lists coming out of HS.

I’m actually really excited to see how it plays out.

We were 37 and 3 so there's that, too.

And Tarris Reeds team won like 9 games

Samson Johnson had 6 guys in front of him 4 of which who were drafted in the NBA while the other starter would’ve been also. Their 6th man is a very key returning player as well as having the coach of the year in the NCAA. Now to make this a fair comparison you tell me about the players Reed played with and his coach?

In year 1 he played with two NBA guys and played behind Hunter Dickinson. Averaged 3 and 4. Last year no NBA players and he averaged 9 and 7 and helped Michigan go 3-17 in conference.

Your point was he played for a team who won 9 games so don’t care about year 1. Not sure what’s wrong with 9/7 on a team that wasn’t very well coached or a team that wasn’t very good. The “helped” is a dig on a kid we need to be pretty damn good in ways we know Samson isn’t.

Nothing is wrong with 9&7. Having said that, I don’t think his stats or play lend itself to starting over Samson who Hurley has praised all summer, has 2 championships, and is undefeated as a starter.

Again crazy comparison. His team has 2 nattys and he was a piece. Dans praised him a lot and we’ve seen improvement but starting 5 has yet to show up. Has he improved not fouling a lot? Can he guard a big with power? I mean I hope so but no proof at all so let’s see. No proof of either but Lord knows we need them both to to be pretty good for sure. If he took another leap you may be right I will eat crow, happily I might add.
