Mora Gut Check Time

2022: 6-7
2023: 3-9
2024: 7-6
2025: 1-2 start

These aren’t set the barn on fire records but they’re certainly not good considering how much we spend and who we play.

We salvage to another 7-6 season, fine - but it’s not getting us anywhere. We NEED to be talked about like a G5 CFB bid option, not just a non-bottom 10 team.
Psst.. check that 2024 record 😉

We went 9-4 in 2024 get your facts right

Other than a notorious lack of discipline, this team is criminally unready in first couple of possessions.

The last PI was particularly egregious because a smart player would have just tackled the guy, and that was it. The pass was short.
Zoo I am having nightmares about it…

Before that play, I was yelling at the screen and posting in the game chat….

Please no penalties… Play Smart…

I shudder to think that they aren’t disciplined enough to know this on the single most important play of the game. And as you posted, it wasn’t even a pass worth worrying about…. No reason to do it - it was short.

This isn’t on the player but on the staff. If they can’t drill this in on a play this important it makes me wonder what they did in the off season?

IMO if we go 4-8 this year, JM gets a pass on next year due to the schedule, so then 2027 becomes the defining year. If we suck then, he’s gone.

Call me an idiot, but JM has not embarrassed us overall. I have used the word embarrassing in moments this weekend, but overall we are not what we were. Which was step 1. I know it’s not enough but I AM grateful for it. I will never forget what it felt like to turn on the tv and see a huskies team dead on arrival.

He may just bail before 2027, of course. He doesn’t NEED to be here at the end of the day.

I too agree with that sentiment.

Both games were wildly entertaining - even if you weren’t a fan of either team. So I am not embarrassed - more disappointed that I bought into the hype. The game made me feel like I know less about college football than I thought. Temper expectations and maybe wait for team to get excited on next season.

You’re right on Mora not needing to be here….

If he doesn’t work out, then we need to find someone that needs to be here and coaches like their families future depends on it - IMO.

that’s true, my mistake. Doesn’t really change much though. New Mexico, Hawaii, and USF have all beat P4 programs this year. We spend more money than all of them and lost to Syracuse and Delaware. That’s not the position we need to be in I’m sorry.
USF supposedly has a ton of NIL spending this year, far more than we do.

Mora got us to the Fenway Bowl in our current state of affairs re: lack of conference. If people don't realize that that is our pinnacle they are clearly drunk or high. A non-successful season is missing a bowl. A meh season is playing a bowl as a 6-6 team on the 2nd Thursday in December. A success is ANY bowl in the vicinity of Xmas/New Years.
CFP is a fever dream brought on by a dose of peyote.

… and according to Matt Brown @ Extra Point, USF spent $12M+/- more than UConn on football in FY2024. (Operating expense $31m v. $18.5)
So then, genuine question do you think money is the issue? I just fundamentally don’t understand why it seems like we can’t compete at the highest levels of the G6. I’m not asking us to beat Clemson, but as a school with such a high profile athletics department it would seem to me a lot easier to be good at football than someplace like UNT or App State.

Bad players make bad decisions.

This is maybe the only time I will agree. All things remaining equal last season was probably the best version of the program you can expect.

In this day, it's all about the Benjamins. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking we could have Nick Saban and still fail if the NIL isn't there. I assume many know they won't be in the NFL, so this is their chance to make bank. Just my feeling with no evidence to back it up.

Again though, Army beat KState with no NIL. Hawaii beat out Stanford who have the richest alumni in the world. UNT just wiped the floor with Wazzou. It’s not solely about NIL IMO. We need a coaching staff that can drive success in this current environment. I feel like we always just fall back on retreads (Mora, RE 2). It’s the same BS that let Charlton continue his abysmal play calling and having our QB1 be a mediocre former FCS guy instead of trying something new.

I'd look HARRRRRDDDDDDDDD at bob chesney and pay him what it takes to get it done.

said it before but that dude is going places.
it's probably never gonna happen at this point, he's probably on his way to a mid-tier P4 after JMU, like VT or Pitt or something similar. We probably missed the chance after 2021, when he beat us with Holy Cross.

Only the casuals. True Blue fans like me are disappointed but will be back next week IMHO.
They could win zero games a season and I would still come back to watch the next year. I don’t know why.

I get and fully understand jostar1's consternation as UConn Football can't seem to have any sustained year to year success while having a decade plus seasons of absolutely abysmal football.

Your point is a good one. Look at North Dakota State's spending-it's not even tops among FCS schools, but yet they produce great teams year after year in the FCS while giving FBS teams tough games (last year vs Colorado w/Shadeur Sanders and Travis Hunter).

We know North Dakota State, Coastal Carolina, and James Madison are above UConn Football and would whoop UConn in football in most years going back a decade-plus. And these schools don't have nearly the spending that UConn does, well maybe James Madison does.

Or look at the North Dakota State football staff. They have good results over the last decade with 3 different coaches.

I'm not saying you can't win games here and there, though we struggle with it, I just don't think it's sustainable year to year. Unlike in hoops, our football program is a feeder program who can't afford to have nice things. Even if we did have a good quarterback, what's the chance they stay the following year? I hated seeing Joly playing the other night for NC State.
I would not put Mora in the same retread category as RE.
