My family is planning a trip into Hartford this October. My dad is almost 70 and doesn't walk as well as he used to, but does still enjoy his booze.

So I'm looking for advice on where to stay and how to get around. I see there's a bus that will take us to the stadium from Main St/Antheneum. Is that a convenient way to travel on game days? Also, thinking about booking the Residence Inn, but if there's a better option for bars/transportation, please let me know. And one last question: what is the Uber/Lyft situation like on game days?

Thanks!

I've never taken the bus you referred to nor have ever used Uber on gameday but a lot will depend on whether you're planning to tailgate or not. There are plenty on this board who would welcome you to join their tailgate. If you can get your hands on a Blue Lot pass that's the closest you'll get to the stadium without a handicapped sticker (I'm not sure where they park those).

As far as accommodations, I'd stay downtown Hartford. Plenty of bars and restaurant options within walking distance.

Hope your stay is enjoyable with the exception of the game itself.

I live downtown Hartford and I always take the CTtransit bus to the stadium during weekend games. Super easy and only $3.00 round trip. Staying at the Residence Inn is a good deal, not the most beautiful hotel but just block from the CTtransit stop and within walking to some great restaurants. City Steam, Dish Bar and Grill, Salute, Sorella, Vaughn's Public House.

I appreciate the helpful response. Away-game logistics can be a real pain sometimes, particularly with my dad's walking issue.

We usually don't tailgate at away games that we fly to because we can't bring our stuff. Plus, we're wimps when it comes to northern winters.

We're looking forward to the trip. Let's hope for a more exciting game this time.

The CTtransit bus will drop you as close to the stadium as you can get with a parked car. It's a good deal. I'll say hello if I see the Mizou gear.

Wasn't there a blog that had a bunch of travel stuff for the old bigeast schools. I think it's a WVU guy that still links UConn, nit sure.

Uber will be about $8.00 from Hartford to the Stadium. Not an issue on game day.

Thanks for all the helpful info in this thread. Just booked rooms at the Residence Inn.

We probably won't get to the cemetery - my dad has his heart set on spending Friday afternoon or Saturday morning (depending on game time) driving around rural CT.

This is a Missouri pig farmer's idea of a good time. So if y'all have any recommendations as far as nearby country things to see, please let me know that as well.

Looking forward to the game and our visit. Thanks again.

There are some great farms to visit in the area with fresh produce, baked goods and homemade ice cream as well. hopefully it will be a nice fall weekend when you visit.

Might be worth driving up to the UConn campus in Storrs. It's in a rural area and it should be just about peak season for the foliage. If you like ice cream you can stop by the Dairy Bar.

That can certainly be a pretty drive in the fall, and UConn counts as rural Connecticut. I'd also suggest that if you have any inclination towards Mark Twain, coming from Missouri, that you can pretty easily visit his house in Hartford, which I think has an enjoyable tour.

The most unique thing would probably be Mystic Seaport however. It's certainly a bit of a drive, but you don't have anything like it in Missouri.

That time of year will be beautiful for a ride through rural Connecticut. Slightly past peak colors but the trees will still be beautiful. You can google all the best leaf drives in CT. RT 169 from Woodstock down through Brooklyn is the best. From there you're not far from the shore or you can pick up RT 44 in Putnam and drive to the actual UConn campus in Storrs. That may actually be a prettier drive especially if you want to see farmland. Nice restaurants in downtown Storrs and the work famous UConn Dairy Bar.

By Oct 28th, the foliage will be past peak and the ag fair season over.

But the good news is that all the rural parts of CT are less than a hour from Hartford. Just stay out of the southwestern corner.

Heading east to the UCONN campus is the obvoid one, a little further and it is classic New England farm country.

If you head west towards Litchfield you have the Vineyard trail, parks, lakes and rivers. It's more hilly but plenty rural. If you want to drive more than an hour you can continue out to Lime Rock Park in Lakeville. There is a bunch of fancy antique shops there and the race track. But it is a difficult place to access as there is one two lane road in and out.

South is New Haven and some overrated (yeah I said it) thin crust pizza that people consider famous along with the Yale campus.

South east coast is the Casinos and Mystic. The submarine base is also down there.

You can Google the rest but as far as day tripping goes, those are the basic compass points.

If you are driving, bring your handicapped pass with you (should you have one). Just have it displayed and you can park right next to the stadium. I believe you pay $15 for parking. I do this all the time when I drive.

Given your dad's preference, you should definitely drive to campus. This video give you a sense of the campus.

Definitely stop at the Dairy Bar if you go. It's very good.

The USS Nautilus Museum is worth a look. The Nautilus is the world's first nuclear submarine. It is interesting. There is no charge for admission or parking so it is worth a quick stop, at least, if you are in area.

If you go to Nautilus consider driving by UConn's Avery Point campus for some pretty views of Long Island Sound.

Mystic Seaport is a replica of old whaling port with a lot of ships, buildings and exhibits. It's a great place to get a sense of the old New England.

Drive time:
Rentschler Field to UConn main campus in Storrs @30 minutes.
Storrs to Groton (Nautilus Museum and Avery Point Campus) @ 50 minutes.
Groton to Mystic @ 10 minutes.

@Jumbo Pinkel if you're a big fan of pizza ignore this piece. It's well worth the half hour drive. It's fantastic. Literally the best pizza you'll find on earth.

If you're one of those mutants who enjoys Greek pizza or Chicago deep dish, stay home.

All the advice above is good. It should be noted, however, that we have arranged for nasty cold and wet weather for that game. Gives us the best chance of winning against schools not in the north. We might even have the first snow of the year. ;) ;)
