Miscellaneous Mid-Major Tournaments

Someone told me yesterday that USD was definitely gonna win this game. Congrats to the Pilots. Warm up the bus for that trip down I-5 to Eugene.
Actually, I think they’re more likely going to Corvallis. It will partly depend on how all the other mid major tournaments shake out.

In poker there is a saying just one time.. I think Portland have used up all their 'one-times'.

To defeat 3 teams in the tournament that swept them in the regular season. I don't know their preseason conference rank but somewhere near the bottom I am sure.

13 seed? I never know how these teams will be seeded that were definitely only going to get in via auto bid.

I think they were picked last preseason, finished 4th, 2 games behind the 2 teams tied for 2nd. They had a much better than expected season even before this run.

Northern Arizona gets a bit of revenge against Montana in one of the Big Sky quarterfinal games. Regular season champ Montana St. edged Northern Colorado. 2 more games to go today in the Big Sky.

Every team seeded 13 and below, and at least a couple of the 12 seads, will be teams that would have never received an at-large bid.

Their RPI is around 100. That’s usually in the 14 or 15 seed range. But my guess is that their huge win over Gonzaga will be more likely to elevate them to a 14 as their true seed. And then the committee will bump them to a 13 from there.

I was kinda guessing mostly because Portland St. was the #16 sent to Eugene last year. They had a better record than UP this year but maybe significantly lower RPI? Probably most years the WCC is well ahead of the Big Sky in conference rankings.

Hope Plebe is correct in that OSU would love to host with Portland as the #13 seed and its first round opponent. Creme had San Diego as a #15 seed if it had won today, so I would be pleasantly surprised if Portland managed a #13.

However, Plebe may have something over Creme in this circumstance. If so, ESPN should consider replacing Creme with Plebe.....

I'd forgotten, Portland HC Michael Meek was Scott Ruecks successor at George Fox. They seem to grow good coaches in Newberg, OR.

I didn’t get to see it. What happened?

Just some sloppy play.... by both teams. USD is probably kicking themselves for poor execution in the waning moments

No... then we would have the BY bashing Plebe.... we wouldnt want that

Ive seen the rest of the AAC minus UCONN......... looks like a mid major conference to me :p

I know the low mid majors are the Big South, MEAC, SWAC, Big Sky, Mountain West..... i know in Men's basketball... a conference like the Southern isnt a low mid major... but it possibly is in the WCBB. Not sure where the Colonial is on the totem pole.
the Big 10 without Maryland, Big 12 Without Baylor,

In Big South opening round action. All games are at the half. UNC-A is putting a whipping on Charleston Southern 41-18. PC is up on Longwood 40-30. SC Upstate and Winthrop are knotted up 26 all.

All of those seedings in the 13-16 range are very fluid and speculative by necessity. First of all, we can only pencil in the current conference leaders as the presumed auto bid recipients from these one-bid leagues who are still in action. Well over half of those auto bids are still pending.

When Gonzaga lost yesterday, Creme penciled in the higher-seeded of the two remaining teams, which was San Diego. A projected #15 seed made sense for them based on where their RPI stood in relation to the other presumed auto bid recipients.

Portland's and San Diego's RPIs are roughly equal (just outside the top 100), but again things are fluid in these lower seed lines, and much will depend on who all the other auto bids go to. After the committee selects the at-large teams, they'll rank the field from 1 to 64 for a "true seeding." Portland's RPI would usually be found in the 14 or 15 line, but how many of these teams will have a marquee win like Gonzaga? That makes me think their true seed ls more likely a 14. And from there it's an easy bump to a 13 if they want to keep Portland close.

Things have heated up in Farmville VA. Longwood has stormed back and trail 71-69 with 3:30 left

Idaho beat Portland St. by 2 in a Big Sky quarterfinal. The State of Oregon will get 3 teams in the Tourney, but a 4th is out of the question now.

Big West game between Cal Poly and LBSU currently on ESPN3.

Being played in an empty arena. Possible preview of what the NCAA tournament will look like?

Central Michigan in serious trouble, down 6 with 3:20 to play vs. Toledo in the MAC quarterfinals.

I don't believe CMU would get an at-large bid. Creme may disagree but I'm not seeing it.

An absolute stunner out of Norfolk. Defending champ and top seeded Bethune Cookman is OUT of the MEAC tournament. University of Maryland Eastern Shore wins 61-55. I'm in a state of shock :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

And that's why they play the games.

Central Michigan also flames out in the QFs of the MAC tourney.
