Michigan State (which is in Michigan) Post Game Thread

Look no further than than an Izzo team to test a freshman center. Reibe so clearly skilled but the weight room is one class he should never skip.

Ya, we've seen the Ross movie before but putting it all together will come (or has?). Being a low to mid-bench piece his whole career, he was always fighting to show his worth. Coaching + hard work + experience = growth. Not saying GOAT but nightly contributor, possible.

Furphy could be getting regular minutes. Smart, skilled, strong.

Stewie still finding his identity. When he shelved his post-up game in favor of threes he lost a bit of himself and he beat himself last night with the ball in his hand. Still, provides at least a couple of brilliant looks every game and his D, especially help D has improved.

Demary a dog. The lead Husky chose the right doghouse.

Solo taking it hard a beautiful sight. Handle is a bit better. Right hand a bit better. D still wanting a bit (I always want more from capable guys.)

So love this team's construction. Back to drawing fouls and on the way to in your shorts D instead of leading the country (sic) in threes taken and fouls given, despite that number last night. It's in us. It was a referee's game and in the long run will help us grow defensively.

Going to be fun watching the boneyard slowly realize this version of Ross is a starter for us if he can keep this up

Can we all get an update on where the goal posts on Ross currently sit? AA? All BE? Star starter? Solid starter? Great bench player? It’s hard to keep track of where you’ve moved the goal posts at any given time.

Funniest thing about the exhibition was guys "fouling out" and still playing. 🤣

I thought Solo and Ross played well and some nice things from Reibe (needs to improve his finishing at the rim, but he was a bit better than I expected).

In general, a boring and ugly game to watch.

Random thought, but Furphy's got a bit of that big-guard post-up game we saw a lot from Jay Wright's best teams at Nova.

Also, I really like Alec Millender. It's incredible we've got a third-string PG who has that much veteran savvy, calmness with the ball, good decision making and three-point ability.

Just check out these efficiency #s from last year.

I love our backcourt. We potentially have a pack of junkyard dogs that are going to cause headaches for a lot of opposing guards.

I think Hurley has a crush on Furphy already and would not be shocked to see him as our floor general in time. And, as others said, Millender appears to be a great glue guy pickup, both helping us get better in practice and giving solid minutes when asked.

I will say this one.....and I hope I'm wrong. I see a little Kalkbrenner in Reibe in a very short sample size.

Agree on the backcourt. Demary is great on defense and looks a little quicker than I expected. Solo is moving better and he looks to have improved significantly on driving the ball and finishing. Malachi is a disruptor and a great backup point. You lost me with your Reibe/Kalkbrenner comment. Why would you not want Reibe to be like Kalkbrenner?

I'm guessing it's about Kalk's tendency to back down sometimes when challenged physically. I'll take that if it comes with 13/10/3 blocks per 40 and a FG% above 65.

Put Kalkbrenner on last year's team and we're in the Final Four. Comparing a freshman big to a First Team All-American and saying you hope you're wrong about it is puzzling.

Just another comment on JStewart. I don't know how many rebounds he had, but he was very much in the interior mix with both offensive and defensive rebounding and he will produce moving forward if he keeps after it. Also, just like every other player on the team, which is great, he made several offensive moves mid-range, pushing to the hoop trying to score. He settled a couple of times for threes, but everyone on the team this year is looking for their shots at times and that wasn't happening last season. McNeeely was the only consistent lane driver. Karaban is driving a lot more also this season. There were also a quite a few nice interior passes and sharing of the ball.

His activity level remained high even though he wasn't producing statistics. Someone observed that he was drifting like in past seasons -- I didn't see that at all.

But if others are producing, he's going to lose minutes.

I’ve been consistent in saying a confident Ross would be the best case scenario as far as starting wing for the team.

Filling the Castle/Andre Jackson role. @RuffRuff especially knows this.

Not going past starter, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the light bulb clicked to the point of eventual draft pick and award winner. Ross will be as good as he thinks he is. I’m not going out on the limb to say how good he thinks he’ll be. I don’t trust it.

Their kids would be gorgeous

Can't agree more on this take. If a few of Stewarts's open 3s fall as well as his close range shots, people on here would be praising him. And if Ross' quick fire threes were airballs as usual, we would have lots of question marks still.

In reality, you need to judge on the body of work, the quality of shots, the effort on defense and rebounding, etc.

A few observations on the others...

- Furphy 3 pointer looks great, it just needs to fall. Reminds me of year 1 Solo when his shot looked pure but he was still 32% from deep. He's a smart, strong, and connected w Reibe 2x for easiest baskets of the game.

- Karaban gets a lot of criticism for his shooting last season, but it seems like way too often is he shooting when feet aren't set, when he's falling away sideways, or when he's way behind the line. Given he has the moves to drive to the hoop now, I'd love to see more pump fakes when he doesn't have time/space to get off a high quality shot.

- Silas was solid. Showed us he could shoot, was a pest on defense, and looked comfortable bringing the ball up. We saw he has the skill to create his own shot, but nice to see he's not rushing to show that in his first (exhibition) game.

- Reibe will go thru the machine where he is taught to be efficient and selective with his decision making in the post. We can all see the skill and the motor.

- Solo is going to ball out this year. He looks like he has the confidence that many in the UConn star role had before him. In both scrimmages we heard Hurley evaluating the quality of 3 pointers from Solo and others, so I expect his shooting percentage to massively improve.

- Happy with the other role players. Very nice that Koroma/Millender/Smith are skilled and experienced in their roles and not making the mistakes that typical freshmen backups would.

The Kalkbrenner is more because it seems he plays away from the rim and seems to get bodied a little, not that strong a rebounder. This year, that's more than fine if he's spelling Reed, but if that hamstring is worse than we hope, I think we'd be soft in the middle.

Granted, do not hold me to this one. It's a total knee jerk after a couple glorified scrimmages.

34 fouls and 4 guys fouled out? 44 foul shots for MSU. Wth? And I was making fun of Michigan in the game against St. John's? I was out tonight so couldn't watch the game but what was with all the fouling?

Boxscore:
Well, in fairness, there were many call that were not fouls or most certainly wouldn’t be called in the Big East play, neither coach really wanted to say that in the post presser but that wasn’t a good showing for that referee crew. They just doubled down rather than learn from some of their weak calls.

I got the feeling that Izzo and Hurley requested that the refs call it close as a learning opportunity. I think that is why they agreed to the 6 player fouls. Just a hunch. No way half of those fouls get called in the Big East. But I agree, UConn still plays defense too much with their hands and fouls way too much. I was at the game and it was borderline unwatchable. 10 fouls were called in the 2nd half before the first tv timeout. MSU was already in the bonus at the 16 mark. Crazy!!

I was impressed with all the newcomers including the freshman. Everyone on the floor looked like they belonged.

My daughter is a recent Dayton grad so I have followed Malachi Smith’s entire career. He was solid tonight but I have seen him way more explosive. He seemed a bit tentative maybe due to still recovering from injury. Although, he has battled injuries his entire collegian career so he is probably familiar with recovering from injury. To quote my daughter when she found out Smith transferred here: “good luck, that man is made of glass.”
Fully agree with your "hunch"!

While everyone complains about the too many fouls, as do I, that is not the issue. It is about FT disparity and call consistency that irks me the most. As an example, we are btchn about the too many calls, but happily point out that Alex was 8-8 from the FT line. Well in all likelihood, inconsistent officiating and "letting them play", by swallowing the whistle, could lead to Alex going 0-4 FG, instead of 8-8 FT. Think about that.

Inconsistent refs and FT disparity is my personal gripe. I can live with the far too many whistles if we get the W.
