Michigan State (which is in Michigan) Post Game Thread

Michigan State didn't look like a top 25 team.

I didn't like seeing what Hurley said to his guy, it was something like you guys are soft with an explicitive. I don't know who he was seething at.

Stewart only managed 3 points in 25 minutes.

Jayden Ross was solid 13 pts 22 minutes

Overall good game. That four week stretch with BYU, Zona, Illinois and Kansas will be insane

A lot of whistles which ruined the flow. Yes, they were "by the book" fouls but let them play it is an exhibition.

I was excited to see what Stew could do with "starter" minutes and with the Coen Carr assignment. I left disappointed. He has all the tools, but they have come together so few and far between thus far.

Overall there were a lot of positives from a team standpoint.

Silas looked rusty, nothing to worry about. Ross looked like a player, not just defensively. Depth pieces, Koroma, Millender, and Furphy can spell minutes. There is something there with Furphy, he understands the game but needs some fine tuning.

No they didn’t. That was not a team with a lot of offensive skill.

More than a few observations:
I kind of dig Smitty doing color with his play-by-play guy. They give off high school AV squad broadcast vibes. Smitty is less polished than Donny, but I prefer his unabashed homer viewpoint. Also, when they started to talk about foreign players, I was waiting for a Henefeld dream season story. Instead, Smitty name drops Marc Suhr and Gilad Katz. Not getting that with Donny.
A Dream Season story would have been cool. I was hoping that they asked Coach Calhoun about meeting Doron last week.

When Carr barreled into Ross and got called for the charge Ross bounced right up and was ready to go on offense immediately. Carr on the other hand looked like he didn't know what happened and got up gimpy. Ross is far stronger than he looks.

Solo has improved a lot on defense. He only had two fouls and I only believe his player got by him for only one play. Demary, Ball and Ross can be a very solid defensive perimeter if this carries through in other games.

Going to be fun watching the boneyard slowly realize this version of Ross is a starter for us if he can keep this up

Here’s the thing: most of us hate your approach and your takes, not Ross. You still don’t get why you’re rubbing people wrong. It started with you acting like the reason he wasn’t good the last few years was because he wasn’t getting coached properly. Just stop. He’s playing solid in his role, you’re acting like he just finished his MOP in the final four and is going lottery. As usual, it’s your willingness to go 500 steps too far that’s obnoxious, not necessarily the initial point.

Ross played well after a little stretch of awkward play. In the by chat a few were saying he just looks awkward on the court yet the stats don’t lie.

He might have moved up over Stewart in general depth but we saw this same movie last year where Stewart proved to be the better piece as the season wore on.

Maybe this year Ross becomes the 8th man (Smith and Reibe see like 6 and 7)

He's not passing any of those guys, it just might be a 9 man rotation instead of 8. Smith, Stewart, Reibe all bring skills and fill a role that nobody else in the top 9 can so it's hard to see them not playing

Just watched a replay. Thankfully it was on YouTube so I could fast forward through the 10,000 FTs. What a bad watch, whistle every minute

But regardless, beating a top 25 team while missing 2 starters is amazing. It’s just an exhibition (and MSU sure didn’t look like a top 25 team), but it’s exciting!!

Solo and Alex clearly want to attack the rim more instead of being only three point shooters. Solo had A LOT of success doing it. That was really encouraging to see. He’s primed for a breakout

The perpetual Ross/Stewart debate - Stewart had a great first 10 minutes and then mostly disappeared offensively. But he did bring solid defense and toughness on the boards so I think he was better than his box score. Ross had the inverse - slow start but then BLEW UP and had his best game as a Husky. Confident, attacking, decisive. If he keeps up this play, he will earn a lot more minutes. GREAT GAME from Jayden

Silas had to go to the bench early on lame calls but his first few minutes were great. Nailed two threes and played great defense. He was playing a facilitator role on offense but I’m excited for the game(s) where he pops off for 20

I like Reibe a lot. The shots still aren’t going down but he’s always in great position offensively and is making the right moves to get good looks. The shots will go down eventually. Although I really don’t like him hedging - very slow to get out and then recover. TBD if that’s a matter of practice or a long term thing

Malachi is such a fun change of pace. He’s SO quick and can get to the lane at will
