We had no business being in position to win that game but we were in position to win that game. Giving Memphis a 4 point possession with Hurley's tech took away our chance to win.
I agree. The numbers tell the tale. Memphis took 40 free throws to UConn's 24 making 10 more free throws than UConn (and it wasn't like UConn was fouling a ton to extend the game). Plus Memphis shot 55% from the field and 55% from 3. Frankly, with those numbers, they should have won by double digits. UConn needs to improve defensively and find a steady hand to go to when they need to stop a run. Last year it was Newton and Spencer. For now, it has to be Ball and Karaban until McNeeley starts to become a bit more consistent. Yes the Hurley T was the turning point, but UConn still had trouble making stops in OT even on the lead. This is sort of like the Seton Hall replay from last year, except UConn came back, forced OT, and honestly should have won the game. Certainly the officiating was deplorable and the main difference in the game was the foul line. Moving forward, you gotta figure out SJ. He is either gonna overcome his penchant for fouling or you gotta starting figuring out plan b.

I hope we rely less on Mahaney and SJ moving forward and start investing more into Reed, Stewart, and Ross.

We have to get our most talented guys ready for March and they give us the highest upside for when we face other talented teams.

Mahaney and SJ seemed overwhelmed with Memphis size and physical.
Danny normally hits on transfers but he might of missed a lot if he though Mahaney was anything more than a shooter. I guess he really thought he was good enough to play PG but so far even against lower competition Mahaney has had trouble with speed. He can't even get his own shot off which is what he does best.

Maybe we can start seeing Singare playing more? I would like to at least see Singare get some more minutes when our bigs are in foul trouble.

Refs were bad. With that said, Hurley needs to show some self control. No excuse for that. Both him and SJ showed lack of composure. I'm never big on starting lineup shakeups. They are vastly overrated on this board but we might have to shake things up a bit at PG and C. Reed is obvious. I think Mahaney will be fine eventually, but he is better served as a shooter and handler off the bench right now. He is a bit tentative in new evironment and our starts are slow and his defense is a problem. His lack of size and strength is an issue. Like him better as a combo shooter while he gets his sea legs and ease him into the lead guard role if he adjusts and improves. Our entire starting lineup fouls way too much. Also think our lack of athleticism was apparent at times. Think we will get better and be fine overall. If you are expecting same dominance of last two years you will probably be disappointed. Our gaurds are just not as good both offensively and defensively and while Reed looks great, not having Clingan inside is obviously a downgrade. Need to fix defense and fouling first and foremost. Will improve but there might be some physical limitations with our personel that prevent it from being a real positive. Btw, where was Stewart in 2nd half? He bricked a 3 from baseline relatively early in 2nd half and then barely played after dominating.

This is why I suspect we will see Nowell at least some sooner rather than later.

Let's hold off on these pronouncements.

This board was loaded with this stuff into late January when it came to Tristen Newton.

Mahaney just lacks aggression right now and the ball is dying with him. He's going to pick things up eventually, he has to.
I agree that Mahaney still needs time to adjust, but he was physically overmatched in this game. I don't know if it has anything to do with his aggression level. He doesn't have Tristen's size and he was being targeted for drives on every possession. I'm not entirely sure how, but he really needs to figure it out on the defensive end, otherwise he's going to be unplayable in certain matchups.

Mahaney is not who they said he is. Hassan needs to start. Stewart needs to play more!
I always thought Mahaney might be bad on D but but not this horrific and where is that creative offense he showed playing for SMC? I think he can still find a spot on the team but he needs to find his offense.

No he needs to be a 2 time national champion winning coach. You love him when he wins and hate him when he loses. You have to take the good with the bad. He’s a 50 something year old man. He’s not changing . Idc how many interviews and yoga classes he takes. It’s what makes him great. Every now again you have to live with a game like today.
Brother, no. The best coach in the sport should not be clinching a game for the opponent. That shouldn’t happen. You don’t “take that”. I’m sure he’ll say as much himself. He won two championships, that can be separated from an idiotic thing he did on the court today.

The passion and fire is who he is. I don’t want Hurley changing at all. We’ll just agree to disagree

UConn looked like a poorly coached team
(fouling 3 point shooter twice in the second half when the score was still manageable,
Poor passing , going under screens )
With very poor guard play that was outplayed
Was fortunate to get to overtime and of couse
Any chance was taken away by their coach

Why not. Lead official is Steve Driscoll who has a long history of terrible and inconsistent calls again UCONN. Will be interesting too see how he treats us in Big East games this year.
