Playing one team that is at least adequate I have no doubt would’ve changed the outcome of this game. We lost to a worse team who has been challenged. That is a fact.
There is not evidence for this. At all. The evidence actually suggest that the way we’ve been scheduling works. One loss is not enough to challenge that. Memphis didn’t win tonight because they played San Francisco. They won because we couldn’t guard. Nothing would have changed that tonight except a personnel change

There were def some questionable calls and Memphis foul baits a ton from what I saw. I know they won and that is college basketball but I can't see them doing anything in March with the way they play and are coached unless they get incredibly hot from three for multiple games (I mean hotter than tonight). I can't see them hitting multiple step backs each game.

UConn has its own issues but I still walk away from this game thinking more highly of UConn long term than Memphis. However, it's a problem UConn lost this game. Last year wins this by 20+.

Maybe Memphis is just that good, but giving up 55% on 3's, including those huge ones in OT, and 55% overall shooting is not UConn level D.

That said, the team has potential but gelling is a work in progress. Diarra, Karaban and McNeeley will be the leaders, and I'm liking Ball's game. Stewart showed up in the first high level game big, and Ross is coming along. I'm a little concerned with having only Reed and Johnson as bigs (Karaban is long but not a "big"). I keep wondering if Singare can give them a little help with that.

And I hate to say it, but in these games Mahaney looks outmatched on D, and only a 3 point sniper on O.

He may be our best option but that also may not be a good thing.

None of our great guards were no where near ready to run a show as freshman, hell even sophomores.
He doesn't have to be a great guard. He just has to not be a negative on offense AND defense like Mahaney has been so far.

Just that alone would be a huge improvement on how Mahaney has played so far.

The takeaway from this game should not be "play Mahaney less" but that this teams Mahaney playing the way he was expected to play coming in.

It is clear that Hurley recognizes that.

Because they were objectively terrible. Thats apart of the equation. Before the tech they were putting the imprint all over the game
Refs are bad, we know. Hurley is an experienced Coach with back to back championships, he needs to put away the knives and pouty face, especially considering the circumstances. It lost us the game there.

Am I missing something? How did he not get significant minutes in the second half today?
Truly an excellent question. Mahaney and Samson should not start for this team. Hurley iced Stewart in the 2nd half, went back with those starters, and Memphis piled it on again before we got hot from 3. Then Samson and Hurley throw the game away, because they have zero chill.

“Embarrassment to the program”

Wow. I forgot what the boneyard was like after a loss.

I mean that. Look online. Not a good look for us. Any time your coach loses a game for you it's a problem.

It's over and done with. But he's gotta be smarter than that. Catch the T at the under-8. Don't give them the win from the sideline.

I like his attitude. I like the Ts... but time and place matter

Yeah he can be better. It may just come with more mistakes that we’ll have to live with.

We need Mahaney to play more of an off ball scorer role. It’s not fair to him what we’re asking him to do.

Will be interesting to look back on this in a few months, but immediately after the Memphis game here is my ‘optimal’ lineup:

  • Diarra
  • Ball
  • McNeeley
  • Karaban
  • Reed

+Stewart as 6th man (maybe? Had a breakout game today)

Hindsight will correct me, but from my couch today (Nov 25) this seems like the best mix. Thoughts?

The referees did not start biased against UConn, but they got there by the end of the game. Showering officials with abuse for 45 minutes is going to have consequences in some games.

I don’t get the Hardaway hate on this board. His team plays decisive and with urgency on offense, and aggressive and fearless defense. He was trapping off the top of his zone in the first half, which you don’t see much. I really like the way Memphis plays. Hardaway coached an almost perfect game to win. Congrats to Memphis.

My takeaways:
  • Cmon Danny. Team fought back & you make a silly mental lapse with the technical. Absolutely gutted us.
  • Cant start Sampson. He's got no offensive upside & didnt do much defensively. Switch Reed & Sampson roles.
  • Need to decide on the PG position. it killed us both offensively & defensively. Cant let a team shoot over 50% from the field from 3. Perimeter defense is probably the biggest concern right now. It went from a strength last 2 years, to a potential problem.
I agree with your points, but that was not a mental lapse, it's the way he operates. If it was a brief mental lapse, you would have to say that you take the good with the bad. Everyone has to have control of themselves. I love him, and he's a great coach, but he can't control himself.

Nowell deserves some minutes and Mahaney I think deserves a few less right now. Solo and Stewart got moments to show what they had as freshmen. I’d like to see what Ahmad has. Obviously I trust Hurley since he’s seeing practice and what these guys are showing. But I’d love to see Ahmad get a chance to give a spark off the bench.
Was it true Ahamad Nowell was hurt?

Memphis is good. Thats not being discussed enough. Maybe we didn’t lose to a bad team.

I loved this game. And while it's a bad pill, I'm very happy to swallow it. This team is so talented. They played their hearts out. They were fired up. They got completely screwed over by the officiating. ( I'm sure I've seen a worse and more biased whistle in a basketball game before, but I'm also sure it was in a high school game.) They made so many rookie mistakes to go down by 14 points with under 6 minutes left, that there was no way they were coming back. They grew up and grew as a team right then. And then they had a 3 point lead on OT with a 3 in the air that barely rimmed out. Let's put it this way: I pity their next opponent, and I pity a twice as much the teams that have to play them in March.

Haha, okay. He needed to get that tech, good call!!!
No he needs to be a 2 time national champion winning coach. You love him when he wins and hate him when he loses. You have to take the good with the bad. He’s a 50 something year old man. He’s not changing . Idc how many interviews and yoga classes he takes. It’s what makes him great. Every now again you have to live with a game like today.

I hope we rely less on Mahaney and SJ moving forward and start investing more into Reed, Stewart, and Ross.

We have to get our most talented guys ready for March and they give us the highest upside for when we face other talented teams.

Mahaney and SJ seemed overwhelmed with Memphis size and physical.
Let's hold off on these pronouncements.

This board was loaded with this stuff into late January when it came to Tristen Newton.

Mahaney just lacks aggression right now and the ball is dying with him. He's going to pick things up eventually, he has to.
