Memphis Post Game Thread

disappointed in Samson's decision making in doing a weak ass obvious push in OT. Might be his biggest fan on the board, but he's never gonna get it, if he's pulling that. I'm also ready to see Nowell. The team showed some toughness in comeback but we arent gonna be athletic enough at times without Ross or Stewart becoming major contributor.

Massive indictment on Penny Hardaway. He's going to piss away an immensely talented team because the guy can't coach a lick after 40 years involved in basketball. Executed the missed free throw play perfectly. Sad it didn't go in.
The Penny hate is so bizzare, he got his team ready and beat the 2x defending champs.

Stop doing backflips to criticize the guy

We do have one on the roster, Ahmad Nowell. The bigger question is, is he ready to play big time minutes?

I suspect we'll see him sooner rather than later, depending on his injury.
We might as well give him some run

The way we schedule has shown to work. Back to back national championships. 19 straight neutral straight wins. 43-3 in our last 46 games and 1 loss proves that it’s flawed?
It’s flawed either way. We didn’t win chips the last 2 years because we played bunnies to start lol.

What drove Hurley nuts was not the bad calls by the refs, but the way they called the game from the start. Basically calling fouls for people using their feet to play defense. You were rewarded for simply running into a guy that was running (i.e wasn't set). But there were no fouls on all the constant hacking. The refs decided early that you could do anything with your hands, but nothing with your feet.

As you can see, the rotations and starting line up are still being evaluated. Would’ve loved to see pressure applied earlier and throughout the game. We’re too deep not to do so.

That one hurts. So many things to pick apart but unfortunately Dan Hurley lost us that game by making it a 2 possession game with 40 seconds left

The good:
  1. Amazing first half from Tarris and Stewart, it was really fun to watch them bring us back
  2. Solo Ball INSANE shot to sent it to OT
  3. Liam had a rough game but two huge shots to help us come back late in the game
The (consolidated) bad:
  1. Memphis switched 1-5 and for most of the game, nobody except Tarris punished them. You need somebody that can punish bad mismatches in the starting 5
  2. Memphis absolutely dogged us on defense. We got Aidan to be the scorer when the sets break down, and he wasn’t able to today. We need that from him moving forward
  3. Samson Johnson has to give us SOMETHING. ANYTHING
Tyrese Hunter was unbelievable tonight, fantastic game from him. Not the result we wanted but we still get 1 more game in Hawaii. Let’s come home with a W. Let’s go Huskies!
Agree completely

This team will go as far as Diarra and Mahaney will take them. We've won 2 National Championships with Samson as a secondary center so I have less concern there but Mahaney and Diarra have played the PG position so far like a deer in headlights. Plenty of time to grow throughout the season but not blaming anyone for being concerned based on these two being well seasoned players already but not looking capable of running this offense effectively.
Diarra played great at the end of the 2nd half and into OT. He definitely is not as overmatched on D as Mahaney is. Mahaney really isn't a PG and it shows. He should be a Backup SG.

Great first test for us. We needed to ne punched in the mouth. It was cupcake city for us prior to. And we doggone near pulled it out. I know I know, no moral victories, but, this game I hope we learned a lot. And let's make sure find quite a few more minutes for Dinny Marshall's cousin please. He showed up in The BIG East Tourney and betlyond last year... He sure as heck showed up today. The stage isn't too big for him... He was a leader out there IMO. Needs to play.

We did not have guards to stay with Hunter and Haggerty 13-27 from 3. No one quick enough. Nowell? I don’t know the answer.
Nowell deserves some minutes and Mahaney I think deserves a few less right now. Solo and Stewart got moments to show what they had as freshmen. I’d like to see what Ahmad has. Obviously I trust Hurley since he’s seeing practice and what these guys are showing. But I’d love to see Ahmad get a chance to give a spark off the bench.

And we didn’t lose because of it. It’s of no consequence. Playing a 250 Kenpom team instead of a 350 wouldn’t have changed the outcome of this game. Aiden, solo and Liam wouldn’t have magically learned how to defend

People are blaming Mahaney, but Diarra was embarrassed plenty of times and we know he is an elite defender. Sometimes the opponents can be good (and made even better on a good shooting night in which the refs essentially outlaw defending a player heading to the rim).

He may be our best option but that also may not be a good thing.

None of our great guards were no where near ready to run a show as freshman, hell even sophomores.

Not fouling UConn late in regulation was certainly a choice.

Playing one team that is at least adequate I have no doubt would’ve changed the outcome of this game. We lost to a worse team who has been challenged. That is a fact.

Just like Diarra is the change of pace guy so is Samson. He isn’t a starter. Will still get a lot of minutes.

Cool your jets, Husky fans!

Let’s take a deep breath and keep things in perspective: we have a back to back coaching staff and if there is any of a time to learn, it’s now than later.

I do think Hurley knows what he is doing including the T. He showed frustrations and got angry so that his players did not have to.

His experiments is close to the end though. There are a few things that came to light when facing with a competitive opponent.

Consider its growth pain. Hurley and all the players will go thru this together, and this will make them stronger, tougher and smarter! Let’s revisit this in December and January.

Am I missing something? How did he not get significant minutes in the second half today?
Your guess is as good as mine. Scored all 16 in the first half, and then barely gets any PT in the second. Finally gets back in near the end of the game and OT. Why?

Exactly, The refs weren't one-sided, so much as the way they were calling the game favored one team. Then the refs got their feelings hurt and decided to be one-sided.

I hope we rely less on Mahaney and SJ moving forward and start investing more into Reed, Stewart, and Ross.

We have to get our most talented guys ready for March and they give us the highest upside for when we face other talented teams.

Mahaney and SJ seemed overwhelmed with Memphis size and physical.
