Bad call or not, Hurley should be absolutely embarrassed and ashamed of himself for getting that T with 40 seconds.

So much for chilling out over the past couple years, let the players ( and refs in this game ) decide the game.

A 2 time national championship coach losing his cool in the 5th game of the season had me 2nd hand embarrassed tbh.
That call was embarrassing. Clean rebound by McNeeley and then Solo got popped in the jaw by a swinging elbow just standing there. And was called for a foul. Sad!

Most importantly: this is the Jaylin Stewart breakout game. Loved to see that.

This game continues my absolute love of what Tarris Reed Jr. can bring to this team. He’s been a part of some awful Michigan teams and he’s vastly exceeding my expectations in the first true test of the season.

I do have backcourt concerns, though. Lots of useful players, but I’m unclear which guard will be “the guy”.
broke out and then Hurley decided to put him back in handcuffs

I was fully expecting some rough patches early in the season. This is a lot of new pieces being asked to do a lot of new things. There is plenty of upside left in this team from now until later in the season. Memphis also just hit a lot of very tough shots (some might say bad shots). Sometimes those just go in.

On an individual level, ROUGH games from SJ and Mahaney. The gap between Reed and SJ is wider than anticipated and Hurley needs to see that an adjust going forward. This was not a good matchup for SJ and there will be better ones but he was just outclassed by every big on the floor in a huge way.

I’m sure this will get me called a “Samson hater” by someone again.

Why not. Lead official is Steve Driscoll who has a long history of terrible and inconsistent calls again UCONN. Will be interesting too see how he treats us in Big East games this year.

Because it's embarrassing and classless.

The refs blessed us by giving out a double technical on the Samson push and Hurley rewards them by ripping into them for a 50/50 over the back call on McNeeley.

People can only take so much and he argues EVERY call. This game was not on the refs.

That one hurts. So many things to pick apart but unfortunately Dan Hurley lost us that game by making it a 2 possession game with 40 seconds left

The good:
  1. Amazing first half from Tarris and Stewart, it was really fun to watch them bring us back
  2. Solo Ball INSANE shot to sent it to OT
  3. Liam had a rough game but two huge shots to help us come back late in the game
The (consolidated) bad:
  1. Memphis switched 1-5 and for most of the game, nobody except Tarris punished them. You need somebody that can punish bad switches in the starting 5
  2. Memphis absolutely dogged us on defense. We got Aidan to be the scorer when the sets break down, and he wasn’t able to today. We need that from him moving forward
  3. Samson Johnson has to give us SOMETHING. ANYTHING
Tyrese Hunter was unbelievable tonight, fantastic game from him. Not the result we wanted but we still get 1 more game in Hawaii. Let’s come home with a W. Let’s go Huskies!

People will blame the refs, but that's secondary to me.

Our coach lost that game for us more than any player. That was an embarassment to the program, and a reversion fo 3 years ago. Massively disappointing. No player should be help accountable until Hurley apologizes to this team.

I've said it for a long time and taken a lot of flack. Samson simply isn't that good. Love the kid--but he isn't improving nearly enough. Start Reed.

Guard play will be our biggest weakness. Mahaney was suppsed to replace Tristen but has looked more like Joey California, unfortunately. I'm not really even seeing the flashes of brilliance you'd hope for from a guard making the transition to a new program. Diarra is a solid 6th-man, no doubt.
“Embarrassment to the program”

Wow. I forgot what the boneyard was like after a loss.

To many times where we went under the pick and it cost us. Especially Mahaney on 2 baseline o/b plays that gave up 7 points.

We didn't put the game in our hands. If you're gonna pick up a tech do it earlier. Yes refs were trash and it was an awful call on McNeeley but did ya think the call was gonna get overturned? Think dude, Kimani, Luke, and Tom Moore gotta lay into DH and Andrew Hurley too that is just unacceptable. The thing about that tech is Hurley was given ample time not to pick up a tech.

Memphis deserved to win they were impressive, let's move on and get better from this.

Really, really nervous about this team defensively. No one can stay in front of their man on the perimeter. Even Diarra was getting cooked.

Samson is pointless out there, an absolute net negative today. Obviously fouls an insane amount, but I have never seen a guy struggle to control a ball more, it’s almost comical to watch. And that tech, although it didnt end up hurting us, was unforgivable. He should not start, and he should realistically get 10-13 minutes a game.

Mahaney is not it. At least not now, but I don’t have super high hopes he will be. He was 2x the player his Freshman year, I have no clue what has happened. He looks 15, can’t get by his man, doesn’t have the eye for a pass, and if he isn’t shooting well, he doesn’t add really anything.

Ball and McNeeley ended the game well, but 2 guys who have had rave reviews can’t go missing for 30 mins. We can’t have that, we don’t have the killers we had last year.

Hurley couldn’t figure out the rotations and starting Samson in the 2nd half was the wrong decision. Then he gets a tech that pretty much lost the game for us. Idiotic, but expected. He was cursing and berating the refs all day, it was bound to come at some point. We don’t need that Hurley. Keep composure, even if it was an awful call, compounding it with more free points literally loses the game.

Defense is simply bad, offense was pretty damn static for the most part. Really wanted to get a chance to play Auburn/Iowa state. Maybe we still will, but not happy with what I saw. Again, 4 games against the worst competition in the country likely hurt us.

We need a PG. this isn’t 2022 where we just didn’t fully give Newton the responsibility. We just don’t have one on the roster.

Reed needs to be a focal point on this team moving forward. Our guard play overall is worriesome as everyone has weaknesses in their game.

No moral victories. Coming back from down 10 in the 2nd half was impressive. Memphis shot 54% from 3. Bet we won't see that again any time soon. Nice games from Reed and Stewart. I agree something needs to be done about Mahaney and Johnson.

A lot of questions were answered - some not in a good way. But a lot to build on. And Murray and Young need to take Hurley out to the woodshed and beat him with a stick. Hurley should know better...

Hurley needs to own that loss. He took away their chance to win.

The bad- point guard play throughout the game was awful but Hass showed a lot late. Samson was awful all game and did something a senior should never do in overtime. Hurley did something a coach should never do in overtime. Hurley needs to own the loss, he took away the chance to win from his players.

The good- Reed is a beast. Jaylin was great. Solo is a clutch flamethrower. Liam shook off a terrible game and drained huge shots and he was our leader out there, incredibly impressive from a freshman.

Refs were awful but it's hard to believe Hurley still does this stuff. I expect him to own it with his players and I expect it to galvanize the team. The whole program has been feeling themselves since the back to back. Bringing them back down to earth is a good thing.

Props to Memphis.
