While their may be some animosity directed towards Geno in Knoxville, South Bend & Columbia, I’m pretty certain the vast majority of fans around the country have an enduring appreciation for everything he’s done in his career, as well as everything he represents for the continuing growth and success of WBB.

I completely agree. I have only encountered tremendous respect throughout South Carolina for Geno, the players and the overall program. One of the classiest fan bases in all of WCBB.
I absolutely agree. I would also suggest that most ND fans are classy as well. My reference to TN, ND & SC in the OP had more to do with rivalries than actual animosity.

As far as South Carolina, I have my up and down moments with Dawn, but I have always respected the program that she has built, and I have never found the players to be disrespectful to us or the game in general. I agree with the Tenn and South Bend teams though, they can be a little over the top and don't respect the game as a whole as they do for just their hometown team. SC and UConn should continue their series, a tough and highly intense series that brings about greatness in WCBB. Two great teams, two great programs, great competition. Keep it going.

I'm 100% with HuskyNans post but less so the post title. Most coaches rely on stock phrases and are silly as dishwater. Say what you will about Gino, but dull he ain't. I'd say for every fan that dislikes him as trash and arrogant ten more think he is honest and entertaining.

Agree 100%. Plus those who have animosity, like most others they can't help but respect what he has done. For those who don't just wait till Geno hangs it up. Sometimes you just don't know how good something is until it's gone. I'd just like to know who doesn't like Gramps and want to rub their hands through his hair.

Nor is he perfect; he's had his share of misfires over the years but he's been pretty good at not doubling down.

I thought what Nan noted was one of the true highlights of that press conference. What other coach would go out of his way to say something like that? But in EVERY interview he gives, he always gives a respectful and informative answer, however inane the question may be. This guy belongs in the pantheon of great BB coaches, with John Wooden and Coach K. No one has done more for women's basketball -- on any level -- than Geno. Do we have to wait until he leaves this game (or this world) before we start acknowledging that fact?

I agree 100% with your analysis. I don't believe he will ever get the credit he deserves. Now or later. I think he's the best coach ever, and changed the women's game by coaching them as basketball players, not just female basketball players. I hope his records keep growing, and will never be broken. He is simply the best.

Speaking of the series, are we playing each other next season? Is the contract expired?

Whether the contract is up or not, I would be really surprised if Geno & Dawn don’t re-up for another 2 seasons. I think they both value that late season matchup a month ahead of the Big Dance to gage where their respective teams are at.

The ND fans on the Boneyard are certainly top-notch individuals......you'll find some grudging respect but also a lot of animosity among many Fighting Irish supporters..........their dislike of Geno is equal only to some UConn fan's dislike of Muffet........;)

True, true...

I might even have to forgive Arike for using the "F" word(s) against Geno (when he said to not talk to his players on the bench), now that Paige is her teammate in Dallas.:D:cool:

No schools disrespect UConn/Geno as much as ND, TN, and Rutgers!
Rutgers' fans used to curse out Geno's Mother! How low can you get?
Rutgers fans certainly didn't like Geno. They darn sure respected him.

Vivian was always extremely respectful of Geno - even in relatively closed situations where she could be quite blunt - but she never claimed she "liked" him nor did she ever say she didn't. She was also very respectful of the UConn program, arguing when fans would say negative things that they didn't understand that UConn was the program that everyone, including Rutgers, aspired to be.

Geno had no trouble making himself the bad guy, especially in the late '90s and early 00's that were when Rutgers and UConn were competing in the old BE. He would take the heat off his team by drawing it on himself, because of course Rutgers fans didn't like UConn as the team preventing them from - almost every year - having a chance at winning the Big East and often stopped Rutgers from advancing in the NCAA's.

Incidentally, in current years when UConn and Rutgers have virtually no connection, the (relatively dead) message board for Rutgers Women's Basketball is probably split fairly evenly between folks that do and don't "like" Geno / UConn. All seem to respect his accomplishments and seem to understand he has become the greatest coach ever.

I have heard that Dawn is contemplating not renewing if it has to be during that time period. Our conference has gotten so brutal that giving up our in season bye week may not make sense if we are in a battle for the conference title. Our players need a chance to recharge.

Last year we played Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, LSU and Alabama 5 games in a stretch. Then we had a Stretch of Texas, UConn, Kentucky, Ole Miss.

I don’t believe we had a bye once our conference games started. That said, I do believe Dawn enjoys the series.

There is also big financial pressure to continue the series SC sells out most games but the ticket prices are up dramatically for the UConn game. I’m sure the networks put pressure on them too.

I hope that’s not the case, although after the 39 pt beat down in Columbia in February, I can understand why Dawn might not be anxious to play outside the friendly confines of the SEC…. ;)

At the Tampa FF in 2015, we were having drinks across the street at Ferg's. TONS of Lady Vol fans there and we had a great banter going back and forth, buying cocktails for each other and just having a great time. One woman said "Geno's an ass...but DANG! he could coach a middle school team to the national championship." That was respect.

I don't know. With that tripping incident at Syracuse, I would add the Orange to that list.
Yeah, that and Stewie's home coming game.

Being an NJ ex-pat I know first hand that Rutgers fans can get nasty, but that's in the past now.
