Marquette Post Game Thread

Because he's a practice level player and we have two point guards who are way better than him.
Is Smith way better than Millender?

Smith doesn’t facilitate the offense. He bogs it down where we have to throw up a last second shot. He drives to the hoop and gets blocked consistently. He can’t make free throws. Occasionally he’ll make a good assist for a bucket but he doesn’t focus on doing that. He’s a decent shooter at the point guard position. But as for running UConn’s offense, it’s obvious he doesn’t actually have a clue of
how to do it.

I like the energy he brings, I like the competitiveness he brings, I like his shooting, I don’t like that he doesn’t facilitate the offense. And the coaching staff either realizes that he doesn’t have the capability to run the offense, or for some reason they simply don’t care to coach him up to play point guard the way it should be played.

LOL. Yeah, Malachi is a ball pounder. He's more of the old school PG.
Might help Smith to vary his pace, seems to always play to a long shot clock, but the coaches seem OK with this pace.

Did you miss the Xavier game?
Ok. 1 game. Did y miss the rest of the games?? I think against non cupcakes they’ve had 2 games over 40%. And 1 game under 30 %.

Our backup C is 3rd in 3pt % and our sharpshooter is under 30%. We have 1 high volume shooter over 40%. In These don’t sound like numbers for a good 3pt shooting team imo. Being #102 in 3 pt % for a team that was supposed to be 4 out isn’t very good.

You said “sometimes” and I showed you evidence of sometimes. That by definition makes them streaky. Silas, AK, Mullins, and Ball are all good 3 point shooters by skill set. I don’t need a 12 game sample size of numbers to tell me that.

Actually 1 game is an anomaly. Streaky is 1/2 up 1/2 down. They have been mostly poor. If they were streaky they wouldn’t be sub 100 3pt %.

Okay so you are arguing they’ve only shot good in one game. Got it.

They shot 8-18 against BYU
10-28 against illinois
8-18 against florida
6-16 again texas
7-20 against butler
13-28 against Xavier

I excluded all cupcakes. They’ve shot over 35% from 3 as a team in 6 out of 10 power 5 games. More than 1/2.

I would actually argue they don’t take enough.

Hurley essentially said as much. My theory - the summer reshuffle of the “forever seats” brought more of a wine and cheese crowd to the front.
I was there. Not close to a wine and cheese guy in the 200's. The game had no flow. Refs called over 20 fouls in the first half. There were no runs and very little competitiveness in the second half. Not a high energy game at all.

He has not played a meaningful minute in a UConn uniform. All cupcakes or end of blowouts. What is it you all think he will bring to the table at the obvious expense of vastly superior players? Make it make sense.
Another capable ball-handler, looks like a decent defender, good FT shooter, and 5 fouls to give!

I thought Solo had a great game but I'm starting to think he is just never going to be an efficient 3 point shooter this year. I love his ability to drive the ball, midrange and floater and usually make free throws. His defense has improved as well. He looks like our best player most nights. If he was shooting 40% from 3 he would be an All-American and in discussion for POY. But I won't be greedy. Take what I can get with Solo. Glad he's a Husky!
Honestly, I'll take a Solo who is a mid-30's shooter from 3 if it means all other facets of his game are improved over a 1-dimensional 41% 3-pt shooter.

Do people already forget the beginning of the season?

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m saying that none of us know, while obviously the coaching staff agrees with you.

But regardless of what the coaching staff thinks, or any boneyard poster, Smith’s play on the court is not convincing.

And if Millinder is worse, then that means that UConn‘s heralded depth at point guard is actually a mirage. Because if Silas goes down, Smith would not be capable of leading UConn through the tournament at the point guard position. It would be a worse situation than last year playing with a hobbled Hassan Diarra.

Slow start, good flow for ten minutes in first half. Dud of a finish to the first half.
First 6 minutes of second half was watching a lead grownand paint dry. Last 15 minutes was a snooze fest.

Marquette is a bad team and a terrible shooting team.

Positives- They won. Solo is becoming a scorer and not just a shooter. Theyneon easily with Kelraban and Mullins non-factors offensively. Stewart was aggressive and stuffed the stat sheet. Just need Stewart or Ross to be effective each game. Riebe is a great back up center. A luxury all but a few teams have at their disposal.

Negatives- Silas fouls too much and we are seeing Smith's ceiling and limitations. Horrible ahoot8ng from AK and Mullins.

Roles are being defined. Offense runs much better wit Demary in the line up but he takes himself out with fouling. Smith has to get his FT touch back. EveryFT attempt by Smith looks horrible. It's a mental block 2
which shows with his form. Dude could Schhitt out a diamond with the way he is pressing.

It is almost reasonable to see if Millneder can handle back up PG duties.

LOL'd at anyone who took UConn with the points.
Great recap….hit all the points. Have to find a way to keep Silas on the floor more. Smith is becoming a real head case. The form on his foul shots is his awful now.
