Marquette Post Game Thread

So now Karaban is everyone's favorite player? Basketball is a team game, and while McNeeley is probably UConn's best player, he is not dominant. Different players are going to have big games for this team, and tonight was Karaban's night. Karaban is committed to the offense, which gets him a lot of good looks. McNeeley could learn from Karaban in this regard, because McNeeley improvises into ISO ball, a lot.

Hurley should put Diarra on a 30 mpg hard ceiling. We need Diarra healthy for a long run, and he is walking like an old man.

Johnson and Reed should have been playing some rotations together all season.

Mahaney is deep in Hurley's doghouse, but I don't think he is that bad a player. I wouldn't start him, but he doesn't suck.

I don't think it's been a doghouse type of thing. I think he's just not playing based on his own lack of production - not effort or attitude or disobedience, etc. Dan Hurley keeps trying to give him chances and he keeps turning them down.

Ok good to now that He was playing the best D I have seen him play in his career.
Yeah - I didn't agree with that change the way Stewart was playing (well), and the way Liam was playing (not well). It seemed out of character for Hurley not to let it ride. He kept Stewart out there instead of AK last year in the BE Championship when he had it going. I feel a little better if cramping was an issue.

Shaka is a class act. I really like the Big East coaches. Shaka, Miller, McDermott, Matta, Holtman etc. It’s a coach’s league.

I feel like we are peaking again. Let’s see. A good run in the BET will set UConn nation on fire. I’m feeling better that we can make some noise.
A lot of good dudes and Rick Pitino.

.-.
You're completely missing the point. In the metrics the committee uses the Gonzaga win is the most valuable win between all of the OOC games for UConn and Marquette. Regardless of what your eye test tells you, that is the reality
By Torvik WAB (we don't have NET WAB granularity), \@maryland is a fairly significantly better win than N-Gonzaga.

Watched the game again….we do not help ourselves at times and I really hate complaining about the refs. That said…..we get a really freaking bad whistle.

There’s no leeway. It’s like we’re playing with a 30% lighter trigger than the other team. Mahaney and McNeeley got called for a few that would never, ever have been called our way.

Alex has hit 17+ points and 50% from 3 in 3 out of his last 4 games. Hopefully he's ready for a nice run coming up.

Stewart is such an enigma, that tough 2 and tip slam are plays an average talent couldn't make.

Johnson might've played the best game of his career, and he deserves his flowers for that. The switching on D was killing the non Kam Jones's from getting to the paint.

But I thought it was noteworthy Hurley kept Reed in to close, and still think Reed would've dominated given twice as many minutes against that soft front court. 2/5 but i thought he was fouled on a couple of those misses. Reed's switching was very solid as well, he stopped Jones at least a couple times. Even if he couldn't dance on the perimeter as well as Johnson.

Mahaney is what he is, he can't lose us a game in the role he's playing, but surviving his minutes is difficult because of how much the offense grinds with him running it.

Solo Ball would be so ridiculous if he had any feel for finishing around defenders. Hoping this years experience goes a long way in helping him figure it out for next year.

He wasn't brilliant but I actually thought Mahaney was pretty decent tonight.

Solo did a lot of little things tonight - threw himself on the floor after loose balls a few times, drew a charge.

You think what Baylor, Zags and Texas were ranked in December matters? lol. Baylor and Texas are bubble teams today, Zags are on the 9 line. Purdue, Maryland and Wisconsin are 3-5 seeds, today.
I forget what metric it is(I don’t really spend my time understanding them all) but one of the metrics they use only use what the team was at the time you beat them. But I’m no expert. You could be right.

I must have misread it last night, I was half asleep. I thought I saw both were 0.8 when I looked

Before the game I said: “I’d expect quick double teams so Tarris will need to be ready to find the open man, and guys have to be ready to catch the ball and hit the open shots”

On the last possession, they doubled Tarris quickly, he found the open man, and ALEX KARABAN NAILED THE DAGGER! Great game from AK

Fantastic game from Samson as well, probably the best of his career. He was all over the place

A key feature of our offense that has been missing this year came back last night - cutting, and finding the cutters. Pressure on the rim opens up everything. A key feature of our defense came back too - pride and energy

GREAT WIN

I wonder if Mahaney has a hard time understanding the offense. In the 1st half they ran a play for him where he had an open 3 he turned it down to take Ben Gold 1 on 1 and settled for a 19ft step back

Great game, awesome win, best, most balanced win of the year. We might not be as deep as last year, but we still are versatile and can win multiple ways. Who would have thought off nights by Tarris and Liam and we still played well. Huge games from Samson and Alex. Same championship heart from Hass. Solid, yes solid minutes from Aiden! Overall, a fun game to watch and the better team won the game in end.

I think it’s all mental.
He lost his confidence and got benched. He played conservative last night because it was clear he didn’t want to make a mistake. While he did pass on a few shots(that will come) he didn’t turn it over once. Honestly, this is what we need from him.

Great Q1 win-Led by our captains. Solid floor game by Hass with Mitchell in his grill for most of the game. Great hustle plays by Samson-double/double.. Alex was everywhere. Dagger three. Thought our bench guys were solid and even looked like AM wanted the ball. Thought he played with energy and confidence.

Let's close the deal on Saturday and celebrate our 2 -time NC champs on Senior Night with a W.

I know he didn't shoot well, but I loved what I saw from Solo. He had 2 big blocks, several contested rebounds, and was diving all over the place. Showed more hustle than anybody on the floor, and that was a high bar tonight.
I'd be showing Ball and Samson diving all over the place in the film room to hammer home hustle, valuing possession and just wanting it more than the opponent.

They are BAD losses for sure.
I don't want to hear another word on that SH loss. Gave me nightmares for 2 weeks and finally it's over and yet it keeps coming back. It's over let it go. We just have to beat them at home and keep on trucking.

Not going to call this an off game for Reed. Didn't have the stats but he did his job. Couple of great finds to AK on double teams, one down low for a layup and of course the dagger.

But Samson was on and rightfully carried the load at 5

And compared to the first time around we cut the turnovers down from 25 to 8.
We took care of the ball, outshot MK and controlled the boards in the second half. Fifty fifty balls were ours 75%. We had some nice coaching changes and great positioning going forward.

Teams may play tight this time of the year. By controlling the boards our chances are much better than many teams. We have the horses for the boards, most teams don't!

Reed has improved so much this year with his passing out of double teams.

Johnson and Reed should have been playing some rotations together all season.
While I hear you, and they are 2 of our best 6 players and it would be great to get more than 40 combined minutes from them, our coach wouldn’t even play Sanogo and DC together to get DC more minutes. So I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Hurley just doesn’t believe in playing twin towers.

I owe Samson an apology from the chat where I said he couldn't rebound. He was angry tonight! Gold was a perfect matchup for him. Tarris on the other hand not so much. McNeeley's worse game of the season that I recall, seems like he was trying to do too much and none of his shots were falling that and Kam Jones was punking him all night.

Huge win, but this board is so funny. Marquette was 3-22 from 3 on a bunch of open looks. If they were 6-22, which still sucks, we probably lose and Hurley and all the players would be getting destroyed, even though everything we did in the game would have essentially been the same.

I mentioned this in the chat - but when you get open, shoot. Don’t even think about it. Just shoot. We set a lot of screens to get you that shot - don’t waste their effort. It’s hard to get open against a good defensive team and you aren’t necessarily going to get a better look by being patient.

And just as importantly, the defense gets scrambling and you can get a putback way more easily than when your own man contests your shot and everyone is at home.

Granted I’m not in on the exact game plan and coaching instructions, but as a fan I don’t mind good shots missing. What I hate is not taking them and then having to force up something worse.
Amen! Getting that shot was what we worked for. Very well put. Shoot, we also set our rebounding so shoot!
