Marquette Post Game Thread

Someone needs to explain to me how Marquette is pegged as a 5 seed and we are an 8/9. We have the better resume even though we have 2 wtf losses.
Good question we certainly look like a better team. They are small, granted they have high skill players, but they also have glaring weaknesses.

Also it is interesting how much more of an impact and how much more Hass name was called compared to Stevie Mitchell.

Karaban and Johnson Balled out. Diarra gutsy and Stewart playing with great energy and defense. What a win. McNeeley looks slow. Maybe not 100%? He is getting beat on defense easily and can't separate on offense. If he can't shoot I rather Stewart get more of his minutes. Mahaney yikes is not a PG but I guess we have no choice. Ball totally dissapeared in the last 10-15 minutes besides playing good D.
Just a throw away game for Liam, he's an incredible competitor so he'll be hard on himself and he'll be better for it. Stevie Mitchell just got up into Solo and wouldn't let him breathe.

As other posters pointed out we beat a ranked team with Liam going 4-18 and Solo going 3-10. That's a pretty good sign.

Outside the win, which was huge, the biggest secondary win here was Alex playing confident and within himself. Hurley is going to ride or die with him in March, so it’s great to see him have a really great game in a key spot. You could see how much it meant to him.

You can see what happens when you over rely on a freshman.

Man, the losses vs Dayton, Colorado, Nova and SH still shock me. If this team tonight showed up every night, we would be 25-5 and fighting for a 2 seed.

That being said, no better time to start clicking. And I STILL think there is another level to this team.
Crazy how fine the line is….at a minimum without batting an eye we win Nova and SHU (which with seconds to go in each we were prolly 95% favorites to win both), we are 23-7, 15-4 and prolly no worse than a 4 seed.

Karaban in today’s Athletic piece: “Like I admit, there are moments out there when I look weak on the court. So maybe I could’ve gone harder in the weight room. Coach Hurley is doing the same thing. He’s reflecting on what he could’ve done better. We all are. And we’re gonna fix it.”

If y'all don't watch Alex on the CT Scoreboard podcast, give a watch or listen. He's a college kid, a great one. Ours.
Alex is back.
Alex plays one game at a time.

He really has become more of a jump shooter and his defense has been really bad since coming back from his injury. I love what he brings as he can help out dribbling and starting the offense but he definitely seems to be laboring out there tonight and in other games on D.

I know there’s been a lot of talk about Reed replacing Johnson, but where would UConn have been today without Samson Johnson? Diarra is definitely a warrior!

KARABAN!!! Dagger clutch 3! So nice to have AK back.

I will once again make my argument that all games should be played at Gampel. The building looked like a true home court advantage!
We need to expand the Gampel. Not sure how UConn can put together a 16k place but our fans will definitely support it.

He had too as Mahaney was ho real help. I know he has to play backup PG but he is so slow in processing everything on offense. He missed a couple of changes to take 3s as playing PG has taken out of his mind set.
It drove me nuts when we inbounded to Mahaney with :35 left in the first half. He had an open three that would have allowed us to go 2-for-1 to end the half, but instead he dribbled for about seven seconds and put up a contested 2 with Gold all over him. Just a lack of awareness.

That being said, great, great win. I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer. I'm pumped right now.

I thought Mahaney was better than previous games. He played a bunch of minutes and didn’t turn the ball over at all. Had a rebound, and assist and a basket. I am not saying he was great, but if he can come off bench and not make mistakes and produce some kind of stats, that is more than we’ve been getting off the bench other than Reed.

Yeah he isn't a PG and it shows. I hope Diarra can tought it out the rest of the season as he we have no one who can back him up.

Nova loss wasn't that bad. Nova almost beat last year's team in Philly too. The other losses were unacceptable.
Don’t think it was THAT we lost to Nova, it was HOW we lost to Nova. If you had to pick one guy on this team to hit one to tie, two to win it would be AK hands down. Regardless of whatever struggles. I think he’s still overv80% from the line this year.

Ball was on the floor several times getting the 50/50 loose balls!

Yeah I wonder if his ankle is bothering him. 4-18 and couldn't play a lick of D and couldn't get any separation on offense. He was awful unfortunately besides his 3s.
Well he was our second leading scorer. Liam also took a brutal charge with 12 min to go in the second, I think from Joplin who kneed him in the chest. Somehow the foul was called on Liam who was stationairy. Hurley went nuts.
I would use the word "off" but not "awful."

Yeah but that isn't killing our Net ranking as bad as those other 3 losses(including Dayton).

His "D" was brutal. Did you see when Stewart came in and played great D that the team defense improved and we went on our run to take the lead. It was an awful defensive game for Liam. My brother and I both noticed this during the game. I wouldn't call being the 2nd best scorer being great when you are 4-18. That is a lot of shots for only 11 points.
