>>In the overnight hours after Marcus Smart shoved a fan in Lubbock at the end of Saturday's Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game, speculation ran wild about what might have provoked the Cowboys superstar guard to react in such a way. By morning, the narrative had been forged: Red Raiders superfan Jeff Orr told Smart to "go back to Africa."<<

I can't believe anyone is defending him. I don't care what the guy said, you just can't shove a fan who hasn't physically assaulted you. And the fact that you didn't walk out first but walked into the confrontation to begin with is beyond stupid.

They aren't mutually exclusive. The fan is a nozzle and has been shown to be so on multiple occasions. A perfect example of that sorry institution and fan base. Smart still needs to walk away.

My question is, how are people even justifying this? How can you make excuses or rectify his actions?

If you had a son playing high school basketball and some crazy fan called him a name (could be anything; racial, related to family matters, appearance, etc) would you pat him on the back after and say, "Good work son. The real world will love you." ? I know I wouldn't.
I would punch the fan in the nose. If my son did so during the game I would be tremendously dissapointed in him. I'm guessing your a younger guy as I think I would have agreed with you in my teens or early 20's but age has mellowed me out.

If the NCAA has any interest at all in the welfare of it's student athletes, it can not allow them to be exposed to such an environment.

The way you prevent this in the future is to come down hard on TT if they allow this to slide.

If Smart is the only one disciplined, my advice to him next time would be to get his money's worth.

There are few things in this world worse than someone who behaves as if he thinks he's untouchable. If the reports are correct his guy Orr sounds like the kind of guy you don't want at your kids sporting event if you know what I mean.

The fact that many, many former Big 12 players are coming out and saying they remember that guy for talking crazy is telling.

You are right. And it is telling me that Travis Ford dos a real crappy job of game prepping his players.

If all these Big 12 players know that the "roly poly guy under the basket, 2 rows back", at Texas Tech, has a mouth, and knows how to use it, how has Ford missed out on that important tidbit?

.I didn't see Stauskas from Michigan go up to the Iowa student section looking to kill kids because they had a 1 minute chant of "Stauskas Sucks" going.

Totally comparable. Great example.

How did you react when you were 19 and that guy in West Texas called you the n-word in a gym full of 15,000 screaming hicks?

I'm immediately reminded why your posts that stray from basketball are so irritating. You don't speak for anyone but yourself. Your conclusions as to what broad groups of people may or may not think about anything are worth whatever satisfaction they provide you and absolutely nothing more than that.

It's also ignorant, insensitive and without class to continue using said word over and over. Move on.

Please let it go…….I'm a white guy and in a Comm. College game in New Haven in the 79-80 our all white CC team was attacked by the fans for winning a game and reacting verbally only to some "racial" slurs - yeah it can happen both ways believe it or not. Fought our way to the locker room and police escorted us out……..that's what we got for upsetting the favorites. The abuse was actually funny but we weren't standing it anymore, laughing and telling them to check the scoreboard got to one of the many idiots up there…….chairs, fists you name it. Maybe there were only 700 people and it's not the same but I get it……. New haven to me at the time wasn't much different than West texas to him I'm sure, it's relative.

So screw your sarcasm Crack!

(If you need proof I will bring in my "African American"head coach who was from Hartford, fairly well known for his hoop days in the 70's…………..)

This has been overblown and the more I see about it the more Smart is wrong! And as i said he's been a frustrated punk for a while now…...

Orr is stating that he called Smart a "piece of crap." Smart suspended the next 3 games. Orr had voluntarily received himself from home and away games for the remainder of the season.

No way that Smart reacts that way if someone simply calls him a "piece of crap"

It seemed like Smart was legitimately regretful at the press conference, to me at least
He certainly handled it in a classy way. Way to learn and move on.

At the end of the day, he's a 19/20 year old kid with a bright future who made a mistake, and he realizes it. There isn't one person in the world who hasn't done something stupid at that age.

FIFA makes teams play in empty stadiums on occasion for fan abuse of visiting players. Maybe the NCAA needs to have that as a punishment.

Lubbock is the armpit of the USA. They do not care about this.

I'm just glad to learn that the last time blacks suffered from racism was 200 years ago.
I'm sure racism for that 50 year old Texan is as distant a fact as you ancestral connection to slavery.

Speaking of crap, that's exactly what Mr. Orr is full of.

No offense, but 35 years later and no expectation of progress? Even soccer doesn't tolerate fan behavior like this for professionals. TT has no responsibility here? B12? NCAA? Smart received a just suspension, should it end there?

The act was trival, the implications are far from trival. What happens next time?

Now that the situation has resolved, let me state that there are no words that justify a physical reaction. I don't care what that fan called that kid, there can never be justification for putting hands on someone for something they said. Unacceptable under any circumstances.

The B12 should force TT to play it's next home game in an empty arena. This is standard in international soccer for incidents of hooliganism, which this clearly was.[/quote]

LOL. Overreact much?

At this point he said, she (orr) said …….

I agree with those that doubt he called him a "piece of crap" (maybe though) but if he did react to that then it's all on Smart. If they were racial remarks then the guy deserved more than he got although not very Smart to know the reaction will leave your team with you……Immaturity on his part in the long run and now they all pay. Maybe Ok State rallies without him like many teams do and has a run……heck they weren't playing good with him anyway so maybe this works out!

I totally agree. Too bad you weren't availible to tell my Mom and Dad that when I needed you. Being a man I will say that there are certain inherent traits we have that make us act real stupid a lot of times (or temporarily lose our minds). But you probably know that already.
