OT: Mahomes signs 10-year, $400+ million extension

Dude is worth every penny. Barring injuries, I say he’s a top 5 QB of all-time before he retires. Seems like a good guy too.

Not a smart move IMO. Football is more than the just the QB position.
You're chances of winning are best with a quality QB. Locking up an elite and maybe HOF QB for 10 years at current rates is a no brainer. It would only cost them more to keep giving him 3 or 4 year contracts.

Not a Chiefs fan by any means, but this was an amazing move by the organization. In 7 years we will be paid about the same as an average QB and will still be in his prime.

Barring injuries, there is no downside to this move for the Chiefs.

Great kid, Great work ethic and very humble (as much as a football genius can be). Deserves every penny.

The key here will be if the Chiefs are a "system" franchise and can plug and play different parts in with him.

Exit Kareem Hunt, enter Damien Williams.
Pay Tyreek Hill? Or hope Mercole Hardman is the next version?

It seems that, through injuries, they've been pretty successful having other players step up and, if that's the case, you don't really need the expensive FA's. You can get the "Randy Moss" type FA who wants to play with Mahomes for a chance at a title.

Great contract for the Chiefs. Not so much for Mahomes Any serious injury and Chiefs can get out from contract.

In no time he'll be making just as much outside of football. He is a marketer's dream. Tremendous player. Likeable personality. Bi-racial. He has it factor written all over him.

He just destroyed the Chief's salary cap for a decade. Can he win all by himself? I hope everyone understands that's a rhetorical question

Will the chiefs be able to sign anyone to a " second contract"? Not many

He said "they're chasing a dynasty". No, you're chasing your second Superbowl appearance. Reid and the Chiefs just made the most unpatriot like move a team can make. Will be interesting to see how things unfold

LOL! It's about a "team friendly" of a deal as you can get.

It’s actually a very good contract for Mahomes. The years guarantee in advance which is a hedge against injury.

But it’s not a $500,000,000 contract...it’s more like a $200,000,000 contract that will be renegotiated in six or seven years. Not a bad deal for a kid who isn’t even 25.

LOL, so you mean he's not getting paid all this money?

Can't have it both ways

His contract, by year is:

2021: 22.8m
2022: 29.5m
2023: 40.4m
2024: 37.9m
2025: 41.9m

That's 172.5m over the next 5 seasons.

Dak Prescott wants 175m for the next 5 years. Which QB would you rather have for that price?

Wow, that's more than $10m per game or $6m+/ half, $3million/qtr.

I don't follow NFL monetarily, but would this mean they have less to spend on surrounding him with good players (like the NBA)? I would think the priority is the offensive line, then receivers.

As a comparison Lamar Jackson recently signed a three-year, $54 million extension. He's more an injury risk than Mahomes due to his style. If he wins the big one though, he'll be next.

Dak needs a new team, if you ask me. Something about them Cowboys just isn't good.

Well, no, since $25M of it is in yearly incentives that he is unlikely to earn every year. The rest? Sure, until it's re-negotiated. The key in not the dollars but the structure of the dollars. The Chiefs have a ton of flexibility with regards to the cap for the next several years

It's like 1.5 mil/half of a qtr., 750k/qtr of a qtr., 375k/eighth of a qtr
Chiefs averaged 61 offensive plays per game last year =16,393.44 per play and 36 pass attempts per game =27,777.77 per game. But, let's say they run an average of one flea flicker per game so Mahomes only averages 35 passes a game = 28,571.43 It's a new game called Let's divide Pat Mahomes salary. Based on 10 mil per game.

Ironically, lunatic Cowboy fans can't quite grasp this fact. They somehow think this raises his price when it probably lowers it or makes it more likely he accepts the deal already on the table for 5 years, rather than 4.

I think if Lamar wins big he may top that contract.
We'll see. There is no real historical comp for a full time running QB. Whenever they pop up, the league adjusts. It remains to be seen if Jackson is the exception to that rule. He threw the ball extremely well, although not that much, in addition to leading the league in yards per attempt rushing. But so did Mike Vick, and RGIII, and Randall Cunningham. They were all going to revolutionize the position.
