LSU WBB 2025-2026

In this post-Georgia presser, Kim reports a "wow" comment by Fulwiley about her own defense. The video should start where the relevant question begins (11:57).

I can't believe she even said this because there's footage out there that says otherwise, including that "fiesty" game between LSU and SC a couple years ago. Mulkey is getting roasted on social media for making this statement. Even some in the media are skeptical.

A media post.

A GIF that had me howling. https://twitter.com/i/status/2009764621457019179

🐂💩.
Exactly.

I'm tired of this narrative. We're really going to act like Coach Dawn Staley, of all people, did not hold this girl to a standard on the defensive end and that SEC Basketball Savior Saint Kimberly Mulkey of Red Stick will?

Fulwiley was on the floor at the end of SCar's only close loss (Texas) last season.

Just an absurd statement.
Agreed.

It reminded me of the tone of Fulwiley's post-game comments after the NC game against UConn. She made it seem as though she'd experienced so much losing in her career. Same player who played a significant bench role on an undefeated team the previous season. Same player who's almost certain to lose more games this season alone than she lost in two years at South Carolina.

She and Kim deserve each other, IMO.

I wouldn't be that harsh. We have a young woman who is trying to rationalize the vision in her head against the reality of the situation. Fulwiley has big dreams and I think she is struggling with realizing her limitations that are preventing those dreams from becoming a reality. She is in this disillusionment stage of her maturity/growth and instead of facing the facts, she blames external barriers holding her back. I think until she recognizes that, we'll continue to hear these falsities that Fulwiley has internalized to help cope with her situation.

On the other hand, I don't like how Mulkey has handled the situation. Her comment has fed this false narrative that Fulwiley has internalized...but maybe the public outcry will make her realize that the "movie" of Fulwiley's life in her own head doesn't match up with the facts.

Fulwiley just isn’t consistent. She has moments of brilliance but then has habits of gambling and having critical turnovers at times. Thats why Dawn was up and down with her minutes. Coaches want something dependable.

Fulwiley has talent just needs to stop gambling, trying to be fancy with the ball instead of making the basic plays more difficult than they need to be.

From a fan perspective it’s fun but it also has lots of its downsides

But this is why Jada Richard starts for lsu!

I agree. I don't think she needed to quote Fulwiley to make her point about improving her defensive skills. It doesn't do her or Fulwiley any good, especially when you see how people are reacting to the statement.

The problem with this line of thinking is that it normalizes Fulwiley's aberrant behavior, suggesting that it's a part of the normal maturation process. I disagree with most of that. I believe that Fulwiley has certain traits that are driving this behavior, and these traits cannot be explained away by youth.

Does she have some maturing to do? Sure. However, I also believe that she's dealing with something that goes beyond what maturation can address. I also believe that she's playing for a narcissistic coach who cannot help her address these issues.

“Justifying in her head”….so George Costanza was right when he said “remember it’s not a lie if you believe it.” Sounds like we accept it for 21 year olds. Sorry, Fulwiley and KM comment is simply a lie. No way to spin it.

Correct!

We accept it for 21-year-olds without realizing that they can exhibit these same traits when they're 64.

And trust me, I am not throwing stones. We’ve all spun things to make us sound better. But it is so inaccurate and for the coach to act like you know, I didn’t know that is worse.

Brains are still developing until around age 25. Maybe it is because I am projecting my own experiences onto her but I feel like I can relate to some aspects of her situation as I grew up being told that I was a music prodigy by everyone in my region only to have the rug pulled out from under me in college when no one really cared anymore.

It sounds like to me that she was coddled her entire life. Everyone was telling how unique she was, that she was a special talent, a prodigy with the basketball in her hands who can make moves like no other woman in the sport. Then in the first game of her college career she makes a sportscenter top 10 layup that makes her go viral and have celebrities continue the narrative. She wasn't mentally mature enough and tied her identity to basketball, letting the praise be dopamine hits that she craves like a drug addict. So she continues to try and make those sportscenter plays that were never quite as good as the first one. When the praise stopped and it all became criticism, she internalized it much more than other players because her identity was so tied up into her basketball image. Instead of healthily dealing with the situation, she masked it all by lying to herself and making up reasons for that criticism so that she didn't have to face herself.

I have optimism that she will find the light. Milaysia's issues are all mental, and once she faces the truth inside herself, I think she'll turn a corner.

Speaking in generalities I feel the past few years have produced many “top” high school players who feel a lot of pressure, self-imposed and from family/others that they have the ability to be the next big thing. The commercial rewards the CC’s, Aja’s, PB and others have are coming their way, without any real appreciation of what those players have achieved.

An exciting and meaningful win for LSU over Texas. Other than the impressive Booker-lanche of points that crashed down in Q4, the LSU defense and game plan were excellent. Mikayla Williams was a reliable rock.
LSU out rebounding Texas was not on my bingo card.

Taking your licks and finding out what you needed to get better at after those first two choke jobs woke em up. Now imagine if Kim scheduled some additional average teams in ooc. Could have been better prepared and sitting at 4-0 in conference play

I just read this thread about Kim quoting Fulwiley. So she told Kim she has never been on the floor at the end of a game and Kim was so enlightened and ready to help…she kept her on the bench at the end of the Texas game. lol. Stevie Wonder can see what the problem is here. Composure. Kim is not the coach to fix this particular problem. She likes edgy players and is quick to back them up.
