Le Moyne Dolphins Post Game Thread

Yeah Reed should probably be a starter soon and so should Diarra or Ross if Mahaney is going to play like this. He may be much better suited in a bench role where he worries less about facilitating a complex offense and more about finding his and scoring.

It’s asking a lot of him to try and run this offense AND find his spots appropriately to get in rhythm.

Since no one else is saying it, Reed is an absolute MONSTER. If he figures it out, who’s gonna stop him? I can’t believe we get him for another year.
I love when he gets his hands on the ball when going for a rebound. Nobody is getting it from him. That is a very comfortable feeling when our other center is the complete opposite. LOL!

I don't see the working hard. He has to know to play off a guy who is quicker than him and only drives. His defense has a been a sore spot and a big reason why he is riding the bench a lot. His shooting will come around but he can't play defense the way he has as everyone is getting by him easily.
This is not how Hurley instructs his guys to play. You play up and then help comes on the drive if it happens you get beat. Obviously you don't want to get beat, you try not to get beat, you get in trouble if you get beat, but you're not playing off most guards in Hurley's scheme.

Every time I see Abraham in the limited minutes he gets he always look good to me. Is it because it's not enough minutes to go around that he doesn't play more or is it something else?
He certainly makes the most of the few minutes he gets and looks great, but UConn is currently loaded at the wing slot with McNeeley, Ross, Stewart and Ball. For Abraham to get PT this year it would have to come by taking the minutes of one of those players.

Well Cam Spencer did. If you don't have the foot speed it is hard to play tough man to man defense. I do agree we like to pressure the opposing PG to make it harder to get into the offense but Mahaney with his lack of strength and quickness isn't the man to do that.

He and Nowell are going to be very very good imho. Our program is in some ways like Villanova under Jay Wright. Younger players are competing for limited minutes and learning on the fly. That second half showed some glimpses of teams past where all that talent and depth just kept coming in waves and was very formidable. Wear the opponent down and then run them out the door. I just love it. "They better get us now".

Another slow start, but our returning leaders Karaban and Diarra flipped the switch at the end of the 1st half to end the game early. Hanging 50 in the second was just icing on the cake

My favorite parts:
  • If it wasn’t confirmed yet, we are taking a 2023 approach instead of 2024 approach. Wear you down, wear you down, wear you down..run you out of the gym. Their starters: 39. Our bench: 38
  • Sad that McNeeley lost his double double streak but solid game. He’s not a lockdown defender by any means but he gives so much effort that he doesn’t look that bad on defense. Will see if this keeps up against better opponents
  • Speaking of double doubles, Tarris Reed is a beast. Quickly becoming one of my favorite players on this team
  • Very well rounded game from Ross. Missed all of his threes but made all of his twos. Stuffed the stat sheet
  • I think I’ve said it every game this year. I REALLY like Ahmad Nowell and Isaiah Abraham.
1 more tune up next week. Let’s go Huskies!

Man we have a pride of very good players.

Btw Who is Le Moyne? Really, SMH.
Another small Jesuit school right near Syracuse. Doing pretty well for year 2 as a D1 team.
I was impressed by that forward that had Pitino as his coach a few years back.

Nice that Dee Rowe’s former players were brought out on the court. I just wish that they were acknowledged individually. Recognized some but certainly not all.

No, Cam didn't.

Good incite. With our talented centers, the erasers have been in good position.

Based on hurleys hilarious reaction when Samson picked up a reaching foul out by the 3 pt line with 3 mins left in the first half, he’s been having trouble getting through to him. Only 2 fouls tonight tho thats progress.
Right, only 2 fouls but both were aggravating. The one you mention and one on an illegal screen. If he got four fouls protecting the rim, I would sleep better.

Prob is he gets beat….a lot

Is there a chance he goes to NBA this year with steady progression? I watched his highlight vids when he committed and thought he could blow up.

A decade ago it could have been a possibility. As the NBA no longer values traditional post players at the level they used to, I'm not sure he could do enough to work his way into the top 25 or so in the 2025 draft. There wouldn't be much reason to leave early other than starting to get paid sooner (which may be a limited net gain with NIL).

loved what i saw from him. Shots werent really falling but the rebounds, the disruptions on defense and the passes to open guys was great. When it comes together for him, oh man!
He did get a nice transition slam, but I was SO sad when he fumbled the steal out of bounds that would have been good for a breakaway Rim Rattler for sure

We have two top 25 teams with our first ten. If there is anything I would like too see it is more intensity on defense. Pick up 3/4 court and make the other team have to work more on offense. Ross and Diarra is a strong defensive combo.

No way to tell about this team until we start to play similar talent. I think someone posted earlier, we will know more after Maui.
Considering our depth, this would absolutely make sense. At worst it shortens the shot clock for the opposition

I believe they are sold out. Folks just aren't putting butts in seats. Separate issue, and probably more difficult to address.
If people are buying season tickets, they get ALL the tickets. They just may not be entirely interested in a recently D2 team on a Wednesday night in Hartford.

Must admit, don’t pay much attention to NBA. Long suffering Knick fan stuck in the Willis Reed, Wes Unseld, Russel, Chamberlain etc Era. So good news keep Reed for 2!

Samson played really well this game. He brings something different from Reed both offensively and defensively. Johnson's foul trouble has been an issue but he is putting up pretty nice defensive stats with 9 blocks and 4 steals in three games. He also has 7 assists. Those are nice numbers for a center. His problem is rebounding and fouls.

Compared to Reed, who has 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 3 steals in 11 more minutes. Of course Reed is much better on the boards and is scoring at a higher rate also.

Point being, I think they actually compliment each other quite well as long as Samson can keep the fouls down.
Gotta be honest, I'll take Reed's 12 pts and 10 reb all day.

that's great - who was there?

Seems like Hurley usually figures a team out by halftime, sometimes later. Team starts wearing them out with offensive sets and depth. Talent helps, but it really seems like they are no egos on the team.
Poor Lemoyne had their hearts ripped out ten minutes into the second half. I think they would have gotten on the bus right then if they could.

I’m trying my best to be patient on Mahainey and I trust this coaching staff. So far? Yikes. I am not even sure what his strength(s) are supposed to be.

This was Mahaney's best showing. Created good looks for himself but just had the rim-outs. Still have plenty of faith in this St. Mary's kid. It isn't Hurley's superstition starting him, it's his practice play.

Mahaney had at least 2 jumpers that went in and out on him and then 2 layups roll off the rim, 1 of which he was clearly in b/w throwing the lob to Samson and then trying to finish the layup. I know it's easy to say "but if he just made those shots..." but that's really all it boils down to him having a good offensive game and him not last night. The complaints about him not fitting on offense and not knowing what to do on that end aren't adding up to me.

Team still has spurtability which is good to see. Not a ton of takeaways we haven’t seen the past two games, but I like seeing them beat the brakes off a bad team. Been a big adjustment for Mahaney, hoping we see a breakout game in Maui. Might be pressing a little bit, maybe some better comp will get him to raise his level & gain the confidence he needs.
It was a couple minutes in the 2nd half, and I was like "OK Solo, maybe do something now" as he was 0-1 with 0 points to that point due to foul trouble. Before I could blink, he drilled a few 3's and threw down a breakaway dunk after a steal and was in double figures just like that. I was like "OK, that's better". Lol

I watched the game late so I had already seen the score and some comments. Mahaney didn't look terrible to me. Took a few good shots that will fall, made a few decent passes. I think his biggest problem is not being Cam.

Stewart didn't have big stats, but I thought he was awesome. Probably his best game in my opinion. His passing was fantastic. Quick decisions and putting the ball exactly where it was needed for the next shot or drive. That Le Moyne zone was really soft in the middle and Ross and Alex had a couple good passes at the foul line, but Stewart single-handedly destroyed that zone when he was at the foul line.
